SUMMARY

While the reference interview remains the vehicle whereby librarians are able to understand the information needs of users in order to assist them, the ways in which the reference interview is conducted have changed with time and technology. This chapter provides a brief history of the evolution of the reference interview, from the face-to-face transaction to the current trends of e-mail and chat software mediated reference interviews, and examines application of these current trends in virtual reference services. While the methods of conducting the reference interview have certainly changed, the ultimate goal of meeting the information needs of the user remains constant.  相似文献

This article develops two models of reference interview behavior: the Needs-Oriented Model and the Question-Oriented Model. They differ in their objectives, the perceptions or assumptions that underpin them, and their content. Their existence is tested by a reanalysis of a sample of reference interviews in public libraries analyzed ori$inally in Lynch's dissertation on interviews in the public library settmg. The analysis indicates the appropriateness of the models, a high level of confidence among judges in the models' ability to describe behavior, and the prevalence of the question- oriented interviews in the sample.  相似文献

The reference interview is integral to the success of the reference transaction. Thus, learning to conduct an effective reference interview is essential for library and information science students. Despite abundant literature on how to conduct the interview, little research exists on how well library and information science students are applying competencies associated with the reference interview, and how successful their reference interactions are. Through a survey reflection on a course-embedded assignment, this study examines reference success from the point of view of the library and information science student and their patrons. 在R. S. Taylor的信息需求四阶段理论基础上,根据读者表达方式和内容范围的特点,对读者的信息需求阶段进行划分,设计3个开放式“过滤器”和5个封闭式“挡板”的具体问题,针对读者的不同需求阶段进行有针对性的提问,从而帮助馆员准确地定位读者需求,引导读者厘清咨询主题,缩小咨询范围至所需的文献名或者检索关键词,形成符合信息系统的结构化检索式。此方案的使用有助于提高咨询接谈效率,优化咨询接谈服务流程。  相似文献
