SERIALS CANCELLATIONS AND REINSTATEMENTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS LIBRARY

Camcellations of serials at the University of Illinois Library were made on a massive scale in 1975 and 1976. The procedures are explained, and the librarians' criteria for canceling are summarized. When new funds were allocated, reinstatements were made under some limitations. The reasons for reinstatements are given. An evaluation of the problems follows. As other libraries have found in the last decade, the University of Illinois Library could not continue with the same ordering policy it once had.

SERIALS STAFFING IN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES

This research offers information on the experience and educational backgrounds of serials workers and the amount of time per title utilized for serials processing functions as determined by onsite investigations of forty-eight libraries on nine major university campuses in 1975. In addition to leading to more intelligent staffing for serials processing, the data should be useful as a partial basis for budget requests, the future development of library staffing standards, and additional research in this important, but neglected, field.

ANDREW D. OSBORN AND EDUCATION FOR LIBRARIANSHIP IN CANADA

The foundation and early history (1966-70) of the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Western Ontario and the activities of Andrew Osborn are inseparable. It is through his initial efforts and the introduction of advanced teaching methods that so quickly made the School into one of the top institutions for education in librarianship in North America. The School has the unique distinction in Canada of being accredited by the A.L.A. within two years of the start of its teaching program.     

UNION CATALOGUE OF NEWSPAPERS IN BRITISH COLUMBIA LIBRARIES

The British Columbia Newspaper Project, its history and main objectives, are described. The definition of a newspaper, and bibliographical problems in cataloguing newspapers, are discussed. The author enumerates the criteria for selection of data elements, and analyzes the format used for coding and input of bibliographical and holdings data into the union catalogue data base. The final products and future plans of the project are also outlined. Samples of coded worksheets are included and the newspaper format appended.

THEORY AND DESIGN OF SERIAL HOLDING STATEMENTS IN COMPUTER-BASED SERIALS SYSTEMS

Natural language and encoded character-string types of holding statements are described, together with views of the precision or specificity of holdings information. Components of holding statements, that is, natural language identifiers, issue identification data, and date labels, set the scene for examining general serials system holdings considerations. An example of a scheme developed in the course of research by the author at the University of Minnesota is used to point out how internal representations of complex character-strings of holding statement data can be given a structure permitting a high degree of automatic manipulation at the character level while still preserving a translated natural language in data display.
