Electronic Media in Libraries

This article is a report of the uses of electronic media, such as the Internet, by librarians in academic, public, school, and special libraries. Their utilization includes searching databases, the retrieval of documents, locating materials for requests through interlibrary loan, and conducting the work of committees.     

Reference Services and Media in Academic Libraries

Summary

This paper examines the impact of new and developing media on academic libraries, specifically discussing technology which enables video and movie clips to be transferred over intranets and the Internet. This Web technology could have implications for other electronic media and databases, for offering extended services, including training and orientation for new staff and students; and for online library instruction modules. More generally, the article will discuss some issues, ramifications, protocols, and legal implications involved when libraries introduce and implement new multimedia services and other web-based resources.     

Social Media Use in Academic Libraries: A Phenomenological Study

Academic libraries are increasingly engaged on social media in order to connect with diverse community groups and move beyond the traditional bounds of the library. This research uses a phenomenological approach and Institutional Theory to explore social media postings at six different public and private university libraries in two Midwest states. The research addresses what themes emerge among the university library's social media pages and what, if any, differences in themes emerge based on the status of the library in question. Social media postings included ten different codes: archives; collections; events; exhibits; facility; library community; sentiments; services; site management; and university community. These codes were tied to three different themes: libraries create a sense of outreach and advocacy with the goal of establishing community connection, providing an inviting environment, and access to content as needed or desired. Ultimately, while libraries at universities with an ARL library or an MLS granting degree program showed a similar breakdown between these three themes, libraries at other master's degree institutions spent less time on making community connections in lieu of posting content and information about the library's environment.

Full evolution to virtual library services demands the addition of dynamic and interactive electronic reference services. The Telebase Help Desk service is one model of an Internet-based interactive reference service.     

Electronic Scientific Information in Estonia: Cooperation and State Financing of Academic Libraries

The widespread use of information and communication technology, the ease and speed of information delivery, and the increasing availability and limitless diffusion of information have given reason to talk about the integration of the library into the information society. The Internet era has created entirely new possibilities for publishing scientific information and creating access to it. Libraries are essential institutions of the public sector in creating online content as well as in offering information services. While the working equipment has changed in the electronic environment, the content of the work—buying and mediating information—remains the same. Universities need libraries that have long-term experience in systematizing and mediating information. Easy, unconstrained, and widespread accessibility are key issues in achieving a knowledge-based society.

新媒体环境下高校图书馆微营销实践研究——以广州地区高校图书馆为例

随着信息技术和网络技术的迅速发展,新媒体已成为数字图书馆建设与服务所倚重的技术支撑与交流平台,基于新媒体环境下的微博、微信、APP等微营销方式已成为图书馆开展服务营销与推广的重要形式,也是图书馆深化服务的时代表现.文章通过对广州地区10所高校图书馆的调查研究,对新媒体技术在高校图书馆微营销的实践现状进行分析,针对目前问题提出改进意见,从而推动新媒体环境下的微营销在高校图书馆的发展.参考文献20.     

Marketing Videos in Academic Libraries:

In some libraries, the video collection is not accessible to browsing patrons and is overlooked as an information source. To publicize Stetson University Library's video collection, staff sent annotated subject bibliographies of video titles to faculty. To generate the bibliographies, staff created a database and sorted the records into bibliographies for each department. Faculty received subject bibliographies relevant to the classes taught each semester. During the first month of the project's implementation, video circulation increased significantly over the pervious year's level and faculty reaction was positive.
