The Library Long-Range Planning Process at Wayne State

The article presents a chronicle of the long-range planning process undertaken by the Wayne State University Library System from January 1988 through April 1989. The sixteen-month planning period included two retreats as well as a lengthy document preparation stage. Participants were rewarded with a public document that reflects the Library System's aspirations and has carried its message to constituencies around the country. The author suggests how the planning timetable might have been shortened in five areas: developing the background materials; formation of assumptions; defining kcy results sought; structuring the final document; and organization of the writing process.

Elevating the Student Assistant: An Integrated Development Program for Student Library Assistants

Libraries depend upon student workers to assist in the day-to-day operations of a unit. The range of activities varies, as does the amount of flexibility given to students to go beyond the routine. This case study details an approach that was shaped based on student input and creative brainstorming to engage and involve student workers in new ways as well as strategies to elevate their leadership roles. The approach encourages students to contribute their particular strengths and expertise in ways that not only enhance the library's mission but also elevate their experience at the library.     

Library Use Skills for College-Bound High School Students:

Despite national concern with general educational articulation for high school students making the transition to college, little research has been reported in the literature specifically on library use/research skills. This paper summarizes recent literature on this topic from an academic librarian's point of view. In addition, the results of a survey of academic library user education services provided to high school students in Washington State are reported and contrasted to current cooperative efforts in other states. The relevance of library use skills for lifelong learning as well as for college-bound students is empasized.

The execution of a planning process for a library system is not always neat and tidy, particularly if a new dean of library services enters the scene with various processes already under way and immediate problems which must be given priority. This article discusses how the ISU Library staff is trying to mesh its own internal planning process with that of the university planning and program review which has been under way for several years.

Research Consultations: Enhancing Library Research Skills

SUMMARY

Libraries support a number of instructional programs, including the use of individualized instructional sessions. Research consultations offered by the Mississippi State University Libraries are individualized research sessions designed to meet the information needs of the user or client. Sessions may provide basic information for undergraduates, advanced searching techniques for pre-dissertation graduate students, or serve as an overview of related resources for new faculty. Information concerning the structure and performance expectations for the service is discussed. Data from a year's use of the service are analyzed to identify the client base and to explore successful marketing strategies for the service.

International Students' Acquisition of Library Research Skills:

This study examined international students' acquisition of library research skills in relation to their English language proficiency. The experimental study involved 13 students who were studying English at the Florida State University Center for Intensive English Studies (FSU-CIES) during the 1987 Spring semester. Results of the Pearson Product Moment Test showed a moderate correlation (r = .43) between the students' exit TOEFL scores and the posttest library skills scores. Other findings were: (1) The students mastered 80% of the material taught as measured by Shannon Entropy; (2) Lack of command of the English language, lack of self-sufficiency, and absence of the conceptual awareness of library research were major obstacles to comprehension of the material.
