Building Relevant and Sustainable Collections

With endowment investments and state tax revenue at low levels, both private and public institutions are no longer able to support their libraries' excessive spending on content. Purchasing large bundles of content is no longer thrifty and the notion that someone will need it at some time in the future can arguably be considered wasteful spending; the “Big Deal” is no longer a good deal. The mantra “do more with less” now means reductions in staff, hours and collection spending as librarians meander through tough economic times to reinvent themselves as the experts on campus who can connect users to content even when barriers exist.     

Building Racially Diverse Collections:

Reference librarians and subject bibliographiers who responsibility for developing library collections hsould include racially diverse materials. The changing demographics of America's population dictate why we need to be inclusive. More black, small indpendent publishers exist today than ever before to provide access to these materials. Afrocentricity, one aspect of multicultural education, raises our consciousness of the role Africans have played in world history, in addition to the role played by Europeans, Latinos, Asians, Native American Indians and all other ethnic groups who are part of the American mosaic. Libraries must make a serious commitment of staff and resources to create collections which reflect the growing multicultural dimensions of the world. Librarians charged with building collections must educate themselves to understand, accept, appreciate and include people of color and their culture. Ultimately, such an appreciation of multiculturalism will enable us to move closer to eliminating racism and equalizing race relations.     

Building Collections through Purchase Suggestions in Academic Libraries

Abstract

This research studies the fields contained in “Suggest a Purchase” forms from 100 university libraries, focusing on the data they can provide to subject specialists to make decisions about collection development. The research will consider whether the content of “Suggest a Purchase” forms may be used to aid subject specialists and collection development librarians to make decisions concerning the purchasing of books and other materials. Statistical evidence gathered through the “Suggest a Purchase” forms is analyzed to justify the relevancy of specific fields. The research examines whether patron-initiated purchases may offer data concerning collection gaps and trends in users’ needs. The paper concludes with recommendations for best practices in the design and content of patron suggestion forms.

Education Collections as Museum Collections

Museum education collections are inarguably a part of a museum's actual collection, just as are the research/permanent collections. However, past practices indicate that education collections are typically not given equal stature in museological terms. This paper argues that techniques and practices used with research/permanent collections should be applied to education collections, a viewpoint that has not yet been readily embraced. Several methods are addressed for upgrading an education collection to a level similar to a museum's permanent collection. The Lubbock Lake Landmark's education collection serves as a case study to demonstrate the need for the application of proper museological techniques to conform to best practices. A scope of collection was created, preventive conservation techniques were applied, a gap analysis was performed, and legal issues concerning the education collection were addressed.     

Ohio Regional Depositories: Moving from Warehousing Separate Collections to Servicing Shared Collections

In Ohio, the space needs of campus libraries are changing just as book depositories are filling up. In response to this situation, the university libraries are re-examining the depositories to see if the space can be used even more efficiently, the funding distributed more predictably, and the services standardized and expanded. The Northeastern Ohio Cooperative Regional Library Depository has a plan to rethink the space in the depository, redefine the collection housed there in terms of ownership and access, and to repurpose the depository from a warehouse model to a service-centered model. The Northeastern Ohio Regional Library Depository plan and its anticipated role in changing the way that contributing libraries statewide assess depository collections and provide for access to those collections is the focus of this paper.

Access to Serials Collections in Four Nigerian Universities

Abstract

The author surveyed four university libraries in southwest Nigeria regarding access to their serials collections. It was found that in the libraries surveyed, undergraduates not in their final year often had at most limited access to the collections. This can be attributed to a variety of reasons including security and a lack of space; however, of more importance still is the fact that the collections are intended to cater mainly to researchers. In addition, it was found that the libraries usually provide open access to their serials collections, the collections are generally understaffed and suffer from a shortage of current, relvant journals.

Using Topic Modeling to Enhance Access to Library Digital Collections

ABSTRACT

Information centers are increasingly being confronted with the challenges of shifting information environments. The development of a digital information society has dictated that libraries devise strategies to capture, describe, and provide access to these digital documents in addition to physical formats. This is nowhere more apparent than in the field of government information. With a public access mandate and a distribution model that has forever been destabilized by the development of low barrier Web publishing technologies, libraries providing access to government information face more challenges than ever. This article looks at the possibility of using topic modeling to increase access to the growing number of poorly described digital texts distributed to libraries and archives. The article provides a basic overview of what topic modeling is and its potential applications in libraries, describes some popular tools and potential workflows, and illustrates how the author tested a potential workflow.
