Getting Started on the Net

This introductory essay illustrates the opportunities the Internet provides for the reference librarian, provides practical points of entry for experimentation, defines some common Internet terms, and steers the librarian to sources that will help in getting a better handle on the big picture. Tracing a few introductory steps will bpefully give a broader context to the resources that follow in this issue.     

Environmental health on the Net

All living organisms are affected by natural or induced modifications of their surrounding physical environment. A distinct relationship exists between the health of the environment and the health of the individuals living in it. Reaching Out to the Net Generation on Campus

Abstract

The tremendous expansion of online information sources has prompted academic librarians to increase their outreach to undergraduates of the “Net Generation” in an effort to more effectively promote their libraries' resources to these students. Such outreach programs involve identifying library resources that support the information-seeking behaviors of Net Generation undergraduates, as well as establishing collaborative relationships with the individuals and groups affiliated with these students. This article describes an outreach initiative conducted by the Reference Department at the Mississippi State University Libraries, in which the Department worked with staff in residence halls to target undergraduates living on campus.

The Politics of the Pitch: Claiming and Contesting Democracy Through the Iraqi National Soccer Team

Sport was among the many cultural resources that George W. Bush used to justify rhetorically the need for war in Iraq. Specifically, he sought to capitalize on the unexpected success of the Iraqi national soccer team during the 2004 Summer Olympics. The Bush campaign produced a commercial that aired during the two weeks of Olympic coverage, in which Bush was credited with spreading freedom and democracy throughout the world. Simultaneously, the president claimed that Iraq's participation in the Games was possible only because of American-led action that had toppled Saddam Hussein. Rather than accept this narrative, many Iraqi athletes and citizens responded with anger and resentment towards the United States. This analysis demonstrates the extent to which sport metaphors are implicated in the contests over democracy. Moreover, it suggests that critics must engage the discourses of sport as they articulate with politics in an effort to recover the democratic potential of each.
