Lessons from a Library Fire

ABSTRACT

In August, 1992, during a two-week hiatus between summer school and fall semester, Illinois State University's Milner Library suffered an arson fire. Nine days later, the library opened its doors and offered complete services. Although recovery was quick and damage minimal, staff learned the value of what may prove useful to others: revising disaster plans, taking proactive steps to secure building safety, on-going staff training, and jointly planning recovery actions with maintenance personnel.     

Lessons from a Joint-Use College/University Library

Community college libraries are deeply underrepresented in the professional literature and organizations of academic librarianship. As a result, the challenges and successes that take place in the community college world are largely invisible to others. This JLA column lifts the curtain to reveal the uniqueness of community college libraries as described by their most passionate advocates: the librarians who work there. Articles in this column pay tribute to the commitment and creativity of community college librarians by providing a platform where they can share their professional perspectives and stories. Joint-use libraries aim for the most effective use of resources in supporting the needs of multiple institutions, whether high schools, colleges, or universities. However, these streamlined organizations are challenging to design, complex to administer, and often suffer from staffing conflicts and territorial disputes. In this article, the author describes a successful model of a joint-use library, The University Library of Columbus, whose multilayered evolution has generated a multi-institutional library that serves students from a community college, a university, and a technical college. By describing the history and development of their model, as well as details about their agreements and functions, the author shares tips and provides guidance for those who may be developing future joint-use models.

纵观全球图书市场,目前童书已成为推动整个出版市场前行的一大动力.童书出版已经成长为中国出版业最具活力的板块.过去的十年(2006—2015年)是中国童书出版业繁荣发展的"黄金十年",童书出版的"黄金十年"成为出版业界和学术界关注、热议的话题.以图书价格为切入点,可考察分析过去十年间中国童书出版的行业生态状况.从对中国童书价格的数据分析可以洞悉童书的出版、定价与竞争状况:童书出版是我国出版业的重要组成部分,目前童书出版行业的竞争非常激烈;童书的定价总金额增长迅速,单册童书平均定价持续上升;不同种类童书的定价差异大;童书定价呈现两级分化.由童书价格折射出的童书出版行业生态问题有:童书整体定价水平偏高带来负面影响;系列化童书存在"捆绑销售"问题;网络书店售价严重冲击实体书店;童书版税不断抬升进而影响童书价格.中国童书出版能否迎来下一个"黄金十年",将取决于整个童书出版行业能否实现良性发展,优质的原创内容及有序的童书出版市场环境是其中至关重要的影响因素.

Chat Reference Training After One Decade: The Results of a National Survey of Academic Libraries

The first comprehensive national survey of all academic libraries in the United States which were conducting chat reference service was carried out to determine: what practices were being used to prepare personnel for chat reference service, what competencies were being taught, how and why training practices may have changed over time, and what modifications to current training practices were anticipated in the future.     

近十年我国图书馆立法研究述评

1995-2005年我国图书馆立法研究大致可划分为两个阶段。其涉及的内容主要包括6个方面：立法的必要性和可行性、立法的基本原则、图书馆法的调整对象、图书馆法的体系构成、立法应注意的问题、立法现状及加快立法进程的建议。其存在的主要不足是：对图书馆立法在认识上存在偏差；研究内容相对趋同，存在低水平重复问题。     

Prescriptions for Art Museums in the Decade Ahead

Abstract The landscape of art museums has been altered since the AAM's 1992 publication Excellence and Equity. Rather than following a path towards community service or an educational mandate, the field has been led astray by a corporate mindset. The author identifies the primary challenges facing art museums in rebalancing their mission, and suggests a series of remedies to the unrealistic economic model that threatens to exclude education as museums' primary mandate.     

近十年来我国期刊数字化研究进展

The Accidental Archivists: Lessons Learned from a Digital Archive Project

This article tells the story of the University of Colorado Law Library's successful effort to develop its first digital archive. The sudden death of the law school's dean was the catalyst for this project, with a goal to unveil the archive at a memorial symposium scheduled nine months in the future. The University of Colorado Law Library staff had never tackled a project of this type or scale before. This article discusses the technological, cataloging, and management issues that were encountered during the project. It also provides advice and tips on how librarians in their own institutions can accomplish such a project.     

Lessons Learned from Katrina: What Really Matters in a Disaster

SUMMARY

While life's everyday occurrences in libraries leave us with a disaster situation, nothing could have prepared libraries for the magnitude of Hurricane Katrina. Devastating winds, flooding, and destruction to the area infrastructure required a type of response seldom experienced. By revisiting the responses in minor to catastrophic disasters, there are lessons to be learned. Some lessons serve as a source for prevention for potential disaster situations, rehabilitation in localized disasters, and reinvention when libraries are reduced to rubble.
