Beyond Title Lists

Abstract

Librarians and patrons can access many thousands of electronic journals today. Librarians who incorporate records for these journals into their OPACs will maximize the journals' access and use, but accurately tracking them can be difficult. This paper describes a commercial solution to the problem. Serials Solutions combines aggregator title lists with CONSER MARC records to improve access to these titles. This paper reviews the benefits and challenges associated with this process, and identifies several areas in which aggregators and OPAC vendors can improve the services they provide, to facilitate this process.

Collaborative Cataloging within a Centralized Network: The Case of the University of the West Indies,Mona Campus

Efforts at networking and cooperation have flourished for some time at the University of the West Indies (UWI), a regional institution in the English-speaking Caribbean. Due to their common mission and shared goals, libraries within the system have collaborated on projects to enhance the services provided to their clients. In its attempt at collaboration, the Mona Campus established the UWI Mona Information Network, the primary goal of which is the creation of a campus-wide online catalog with member libraries having access to a larger pool of resources. Most of the departmental libraries within the system have struggled with their inability to adequately acquire and provide access to their collections. To this end some of these libraries have collaborated with the UWI Library to have their holdings added to the online public access catalog (OPAC). This article presents an overview of the collaborative efforts of the UWI Mona Libraries.     

Working around the ERM: Automating Accurate Electronic Serials Holdings Data in Bibliographic Records

Accurate holdings information for electronic serials is essential to librarians and users. Collection management staff spent copious amounts of time creating and updating links and public notes in electronic serials bibliographic records. This effort not only duplicated the work of our e-resource access and management software, but the updated information also quickly became outdated and inaccurate. This article describes our project to replace platform-specific Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) with an International Standard Serial Number–specific, static URL that points to the e-resource access and management software resource page and details the. process, from generating the URL and batch-editing machine-readable cataloging records, to garnering support from stakeholders and teaching users to navigate new steps.     

Literature of Behavioral Economics,Part 2: Databases,Journals, Articles,and Working Papers

During the last decade, behavioral economics has become an important and pervasive field. Since it draws from both psychology and economics, we tested four databases to compare coverage: EconLit, PsycINFO, Business Source Premier, and Academic Search Premier. We also explored which journals contain most articles on the subject, tracked the dates of those articles, and looked at trends in authorship. Finally, we show how the boom in behavioral economics research is reflected in the increase of working papers on the subject.     

Core Journal Lists: Classic Tool,New Relevance

Reviews the historical context of core journal lists, current uses in collection assessment, and existing methodologies for creating lists. Outlines two next generation core list projects developing new methodologies and integrating novel information/data sources to improve precision: a national-level core psychology list and the other a local institutional core list for the interdisciplinary field of urban studies and planning. The paper is based on the authors’ panel presentation at the 2009 ACRL National Conference (Seattle, Washington) titled “Core Journal Lists Re-viewed and Re-imagined.”     

An investigation into the move towards electronic journals: a case study of NHS libraries in Kent,Surrey and Sussex

Electronic journals are so embedded into practice in academic libraries that it is easy to forget that this is not the case everywhere. In NHS libraries, for example, the staff face a particular set of issues. This article is based on Rebecca England's dissertation on this topic, completed as part of the MSc Econ course in Information and Library studies at Aberystwyth University. Rebecca is E‐resources Librarian at the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust. She investigated the momentum towards electronic journals in NHS libraries in the Kent, Surrey and Sussex region and the potential for a regional purchasing consortium. AM     

大学生对高校信息公开的反应-基于南京市的调查分析

对南京高校信息公开的大学生反应进行问卷调查,分析大学生对高校信息公开的认知情况,大学生对信息公开的需求和高校信息公开的程度,大学生的信息获取与对高校信息公开的评价等。据此提出推进高校信息公开的建议:以法律为准绳推进高校信息公开、建立健全高校信息公开机构、创新高校信息公开管理机制、以学校网站为主建立和完善信息公开渠道。     

Usage of electronic journals and their effect on interlibrary loan: A case study at the University of Nevada, Reno

As libraries increase their electronic journal collections, would dependence on interlibrary loan decrease? This paper reports a case study at the University of Nevada, Reno, University Libraries (UNR) focusing on the usage of the Elsevier online journal package and interlibrary loan (ILL) borrowing activities. It analyzes four-years' worth of UNR usage and ILL statistics, gathered between July 1999 and June 2003. It also provides observations and explanations from a perspective beyond statistics, at the level of library services and the campus demographic and research environments.     

Faculty Members and E-Journals: The Case of Private Universities in Kumasi,Ghana

The purpose of this study was to determine the level of awareness, accessibility, and use of electronic journals (E-journals) by the faculty members of Garden City University College (GCUC) and Christian Service University College (CSUC) in Kumasi, Ghana. The survey method was used with questionnaire as the data collection instrument. The study found that levels of awareness and use of E-journals were relatively high while accessibility was somewhat poor. Problems such as slow network, regular power-cuts, and unstable network were found to hinder access and use of E-journals. Therefore, adequate publicity, regular training, and provision of power generators were recommended by the study to solve the problems.

在资讯时代,掌握媒体舆情可以帮助地方政府了解社情民意,进行科学决策。该文分析了地方政府对媒体舆情掌控的需求,并结合广州大学图书馆为地方政府部门开展媒体舆情信息服务的具体实践,探讨图书馆如何构建面向地方政府开展媒体舆情监察与分析信息服务的机制。     

美国高校信息素养教学内容剖析与启示——以德克萨斯州立大学的TILT为例

为了解并借鉴美国高校信息素养教学的成功经验,以德克萨斯州立大学的信息素养课程(TILT)为实例,对其内容进行深入剖析。总结TILT可资借鉴的长处:全面理解信息素养的内涵,重视文献源知识,以通论方式组织本课程教学,将文献利用的内涵定位在文献的合理合法使用上。提出了改进信息素养课教学内容组织方法的具体建议:采用TILT的“通论”方式组织课堂教学,把国内惯用的“各论”方式限于实习课教学。     

The Slavic Humanities Index: A New Electronic Tool for Scholarly Research in the Field of Central,Eastern, and Southeastern European Studies

In this article, the author discusses the creation of an electronic index of scholarly Slavic periodicals in the humanities, which will launch in early 2012. The aim of this project is to create a standard electronic reference tool in the field of Central, Eastern, and Southeastern European Studies, which will help professors, students, and researchers. The index contains important scholarly journals from Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Macedonia, Poland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Ukraine. Indexing begins with 1994 issues and is ongoing. In the future, significant retrospective journals will be indexed in order to improve the tool's research capabilities. The index contains not only articles, but also all book reviews and information on conferences, workshops, organizations, and foundations. The index currently contains citations of over 125,000 articles from more than 143 Slavic journals in the humanities. The use of the Library of Congress transliteration scheme and subject headings will assist users to perform effective searches.
