Copyright Information Management and the University Library: Staffing,Organizational Placement and Authority

Copyright plays a central role in numerous activities within higher education, and educating a university community about copyright law should be a priority, if only to protect the institution from lawsuits. But, based upon a literature review, institutions devote a more resources to other intellectual property activities – plagiarism detection, technology transfer and illegal file sharing management – than for general copyright education activities. Utilizing Mintzberg's organizational model and its discussion of organizational placement and legitimacy as a conceptual framework, this study explores the current copyright education structures among the universities that comprise the Consortium on Institutional Cooperation, otherwise known as the CIC or the Big Ten, to determine whether organizational placement, credentials of individuals, and resources devoted to this activity affect the legitimacy of the office and the authority of copyright officers to fulfill their responsibilities. The results of this study suggest that organizational placement, while it plays a role, is not nearly as important as the credentials of the individual in the position in conveying legitimacy.     

Responsive Web Site Development at the Library,Institute of Technology Tallaght: A Case Study

ABSTRACT

This case study reviews the responsive Web design project undertaken by the Library, Institute of Technology Tallaght, with Granite Digital, including the preparatory literature review, the design process, task allocation, and the technologies leveraged to deliver the final design. The library is a small academic library with limited resources, and the project took place during a particularly challenging period in Ireland. The different types of testing the site underwent before launch are discussed, including testing of the design itself across browsers, accessibility testing using free online resources, testing the responsive design using free online resources, and physical device testing. The article outlines how feedback was gathered and addressed, and discusses plans for future upkeep and development. Finally, the article concludes that it is possible for a small academic library to successfully deliver a high quality library Web site using responsive design.

Library and Information Science Education in Uzbekistan

This article examines the historical development and current state of professional librarian training in Uzbekistan. It aims to determine the main challenges that face LIS education in that country. The article begins with a brief literature review and some historical background on library education in Uzbekistan prior to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. It then describes the educational activities of the Department of Library-Information Systems at Tashkent University of Information Technologies, which is the only institution in Uzbekistan currently offering graduate degrees in librarianship.

由于全球信息化进程的加快和科学技术的飞速发展,数字图书馆应运而生,因此需要图书馆引进或自建网络数据库系统,由此涉及到著作权问题。增强著作版权保护意识,已经摆在数据库使用者和数据库开发者面前。我国目前修改后的《著作权法》增加了"信息网络传播权"一款,给中国的数据库著作权的保护,提供了一定的法律依据。
