Internet Resources:

This article is aimed at the practical applications of information available on the Internet and how it creates a new role f a reference librarians as information facilitators. It focuses on the Info.umd.edu database developed by the University of Maryland and how it makes the transfer of files very easy. There are examples of how his database can be used to facilitate librarian and faculty interaction and collegiality, and how it is a resource for answers to specific questions. It contains specific examples of how the database was used in the above situations. One such example is how the author introduced the Women's Studies sections of the database to the Women's Studies faculty. They saw it as a wonderhrl resource for information as to what other faculty are doing across the country. The database has been used to enhance the image of the library on campus. Within minutes of downloading the text of the Democratic National Platform from Info, the college president's office called thanking the library for making it available to the campus. It presents the idea that the information available on the Internet is still essentially an untapped resource by many faculty and students. Librarians have the skills to become guides and mentors in the exploitation of that resource. Databases like Info.umd.edu and knowledge of them make us a valuable commodity on campus.

Thanks to the Internet, the average investor today has access to more information about potential investments and their performance than has been available at any time in the past. When called upon to aid in filtering through this information, the business reference librarian is also faced with the challenge of knowing what is “out there” and how to find it. This article identifies sites that provide information about stocks and their exchanges, mutual funds, bonds, company annual reports, and taxes.

ABSTRACT

Current and reliable tax information is important to nearly every adult in the United States. Individual taxpayers, business owners, persons planning for their financial future, and employees of legal and tax-related fields all require accurate taxation information. This article is a selective, annotated guide to major U.S. taxation resources on the Internet. It includes official governmental Web sites; meta sites; resources for state and local taxation information; professional organizations and associations; news; tax reform sites; and sites designed for personal financial planning. Finally, there is coverage of several major commercial products from major tax information providers.     

Holocaust Resources on the Internet

Summary

Due to the wealth of information available on the Internet, using it for research is often difficult and time consuming. These barriers can be traced to the Internet's mystic appeal. This misplaced focus often leads users away from the very thought process that directed them to this resource tool. The following article stresses a research process rather than the delivering technology. It details the use of an established evaluation criteria that helps identify quality Net resources. The process also involves locating Net information based on resource type (museums, research centers, oral testimonies, library catalogs, etc.). Although this survey focuses on the Holocaust, the process is universal.

This article describes fourteen Internet sites on popular entertainment subjects that provide information on books and book reviews, celebrities, movies, and restaurants. While there are innumerable entertainment-related resources on the Internet, these were selected because they provide a great deal of authoritative information that is easy to find. A brief summary describes the contents of each site.

Abstract

This article focuses on the current status of the Internet for scholarly research in the field of education on the eve of the millennium, highlighting several categories of resources: commercial databases, government and educational association Web sources, and specialty Web pages. After a brief speculation concerning the possible future of Internet and World Wide Web information in future educational research and scholarly activities, the chapter concludes with a Webliography of the Internet sites highlighted in the article.     

Science Resources on the Internet

This article focuses on resources for science reference available on the Internet. The types of resources covered include: anonymous FTP files and archives; telnel and finger sites; electronic journals and Usenet conferences; and access tools Like gophers and WAIS.
