The IAIMS initiative at the University of Maryland at Baltimore

With support from the National Library of Medicine, the University of Maryland at Baltimore is creating an Integrated Academic Information Management System (IAIMS) that will serve as a prototype for academic health centers. A campus-wide undertaking, the IAIMS initiative at Maryland is characterized by its functional comprehensiveness and its planning model. The resulting strategic plan is serving as a guide in the ongoing model development within an interdisciplinary Hypertension Center.     

The Health Sciences and Human Services Library: "this is one sweet library"

The opening of the Health Sciences and Human Services Library at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, in April, 1998, was a highly anticipated event. With its unique architecture and stunning interior features, it is a signature building for the university in downtown Baltimore. The building is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, but has a warm, inviting atmosphere making it a focal point for the campus community. Its highly functional, flexible design will serve the staff and users well into the twenty-first century.

以搜集到的首都图书馆、上海市图书馆、深圳市图书馆、台北市图书馆、香港公共图书馆、旧金山图书馆和列治文图书馆在2008年开展的所有推广活动目录为文本,对国内外公共图书馆在推广活动的主题、活动方式、宣传方式及目标人群几方面进行内容分析,比较其差异并试分析其原因,希望籍此能为国内图书馆宣传推广活动带来一些启示。     

Opportunities and Efficiencies in Building a New Service Desk Model

In July 2015, the Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HS/HSL) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), merged its reference and circulation services, creating the Information Services Department and Information Services Desk. Designing the Information Services Desk with a team approach allowed for the re-examination of the HS/HSL’s service model from the ground up. With the creation of a single service point, the HS/HSL was able to create efficiencies, improve the user experience by eliminating handoffs, create a collaborative team environment, and engage information services staff in a variety of new projects.     

Dividends of Diversity

The advantages of a multicultural society are outlined. The services and programs of the Newark (N.J.) Public Library based upon these advantages are indicated.     

Self-Service Customer Service Models in Libraries

ABSTRACT

The intent of this research study is to analyze and evaluate the transition to a self-service customer service model with the Baltimore County Public Library (BCPL). The study uses customer satisfaction surveys with questions specifically aimed at the various self-service service points BCPL offers to its customers. The methodology also includes several interviews with managers and directors to gain more in-depth information about how the transition affected the whole library system, its policies and procedures, and staffing. The results of this study are intended to demonstrate the effectiveness of using a self-service model in a public library.

面向极客群体的高校图书馆创新服务研究——德国科隆图书馆“极客@科隆”计划及启示

[目的/意义]总结德国科隆图书馆"极客@科隆"计划的经验,为国内高校图书馆面向极客开展创新服务提供建议和参考。[方法/过程]以拥有丰富极客服务实践经验的德国科隆图书馆作为主要研究对象,对科隆图书馆开展的"极客@科隆"计划进行介绍和分析,归纳出为极客提供服务的相关经验,在此基础上总结出高校图书馆如何为校园极客提供创新服务。[结果/结论]高校图书馆需要将以往开展的活动主题拓展到科学技术领域中,联合各种团体和公司开展多种形式的极客活动,同时通过升级图书馆空间和挖掘馆藏资源等方式为极客提供创新服务。     

我国台湾地区图书资讯与档案学研究进展(2009-2018)

我国台湾地区图书资讯与档案学起源于武昌文华图专。文章采用LDA主题模型分析法,以2009-2018年间出版的1,326篇期刊论文、1,288篇博硕学位论文、342项研究计划、1,271种专书与会议论文集作为研究对象,从文献数量、核心作者、主题分布、主题演化4个方面探讨台湾地区图书资讯与档案学的发展现状与趋势,并从图书馆参考服务研究、电子资源与资讯系统研究、数位典藏研究、数位学习与资讯素养研究、电子书与数位阅读研究,以及资讯需求与资讯行为研究6大研究主题对近10年学科领域发展状况进行详细论述,为海峡两岸学术交流提供参考。研究发现,资讯科技的出现带动了数位典藏、数位学习、数位阅读等数位化研究的发展,推动了图书馆服务项目的转型升级,凸显出以资讯使用者为体、资讯服务为用的学科理念,以及学科研究融入社会的趋势。     

The Community Access Library Line:

The Community Access Library Line of Los Angeles County Public Library has provided multilingual information and referral to Southern California since 1979 through a toll-free 800 telephone service. Designed to overcome barriers of language, social services complexity and Los Angeles County's large size for ethnic communities, the toll-free number has provided extended benefits to the public and the library community, making CALL a central contact for the County Library and the designated referral source for literacy programs in Southern California. These benefits include convenience for the public, ease of publicity, effective distribution of library resources and staff skills, and good management information, suggesting that toll-free services have a useful place in library services.

Sara E. Grozanick is a student in the School of Information and Library Science (SILS) at the Pratt Institute, New York. Recognizing the significance of the Open Access movement to the advancement of scholarship, here she writes a bibliographic essay on research into the citation impact of open access journal articles.

The School of Information and Library Science (SILS) at the Pratt Institute located in Manhattan and offering LIS education since 1890, features a curriculum based on Cultural Informatics and World Information, Society & Environments (WISE). The program reflects the arts orientation of Pratt and its alliance with cultural institutions in the city such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Public Library, and the Brooklyn Museum. The nearly 400 students who attend Pratt-SILS onsite have the opportunity to select a master's program resulting in a MS in Library and Information Science or a MSLIS with Library Media Specialist Certification, archives certificate, or dual degree programs resulting in a MSLIS/MS History of Art, a MSLIS/MFA Digital Arts, or a MSLIS/JD with Brooklyn Law School.

Collection Development in Alabama's Public Libraries

The Alabama Public Library Service, the state library agency, has implemented several statewide programs for the improvement of local public library collections. These include the development of resource sharing tools such as union lists, workshops, personnel grants, and funds for book purchases. The state's resource sharing network, computer-output-microfilm union catalog, reference and interlibrary loan program as well as other programs are described.

The ALA-Accredited Palmer School of Library and Information Science was established in 1959 at Long Island University's (LIU) Post campus. Palmer's mission is to empower information professionals through education, research and achievement. The Palmer School offers a Doctorate in Information Studies; the Master of Science in Library and Information Science with optional concentrations in Archives and Records Management, Rare Books and Special Collections; Advanced Certificates in both Archives and Records Management and in Public Library Administration. The School also offers a Masters in Science in School Library Media. The Archives and Records Management certificate can be taken post-Master's or concurrently as part of the MSLIS program and is now offered both face-to-face and online.     

Chat Widgets: Placing Your Virtual Reference Services at Your User's Point(s) of Need

The senior population in America is expected to double from 35 million in 2004 to 70 million by 2030, creating an ever-growing need for libraries to provide quality senior services and programs. This article discusses the services and programs that the San Antonio Public Library (SAPL) offers for senior groups, the issue of additional services that the SAPL can provide in the future to accommodate the needs of seniors groups and those with disabilities, and what services other public libraries provide to senior citizens.

Martha Stortz is a student in the Library and Information Science (LIS) program at the University of Western Ontario. In this essay she offers her perspective on the teaching of librarianship.

The University of Western Ontario's LIS program is part of the Faculty of Information and Media Studies (FIMS) and enjoys the benefits of interdisciplinarity brought about by collaboration with other FIMS programs such as Journalism and Media Studies. Originally founded as the independent School of Library and Information Science in 1967, the school merged with other programs in 1996 to form FIMS. Two major LIS programs of study are offered: one leading to the Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) and the other to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The MLIS program is accredited by the American Library Association.

2010年7月举办的第十届海峡两岸图书资讯学学术研讨会,会议论文包括五大主题。图书资讯学教育历史研究、图书资讯学教育研究、图书资讯学理论研究、图书资讯学实务研究、文献计量学与新技术、新方法在图书资讯学中的应用力求创新、研以致用、恪守研究规范、实证研究成为主流,来自各类基金资助的论文占据相当比例。本次会议具有重要的意义,所讨论的问题能够反映学界对LIS教育与研究的最新思考。     

STEAM Around the World: Successfully Incorporating Hands-On Learning and Diversity into Children's Programming

The incorporation of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) into library programming is a continuing trend in the United States. At the Mount Prospect Public Library (MPPL) in Illinois, there are many STEAM programs in-house that focus on science and technology, but we were looking for ways to add it to outreach programming. Our receipt of the Association for Library Service to Children's (ALSC) Building STEAM with Día grant allowed us to build upon an established Día de los Niños, Día de los Libros (Día) program.
