Foreign and International Law Librarianship

Abstract

Many librarians, lawyers, and law students express interest in becoming foreign, comparative, and international law (FCIL) librarians. This paper answers common questions about the job duties, salaries, qualifications, satisfactions, and frustrations of FCIL librarians.     

Framing a Vision for 21st-Century Librarianship: LIS Education in Changing Times

Librarianship is at a critical juncture. Technological changes have reshaped the information landscape, but libraries as social institutions have not been able to transform themselves to keep pace. This is the challenge of Library and Information Science Education. As we look to a future professional education for librarians, we need to acknowledge the need to reinvent our educational goals and methods so our graduates can lead in this new emerging environment. A relevant education for the information sectors will include a synthesis of global, technical, and critical perspectives to encourage librarians to understand the changes they need to enact to ensure relevance for the future.     

The Unbundling of Legal Services and its Implications for Law Librarianship

This article examines the role of law libraries with respect to free Web-based legal information sites and the lack of access to low-cost legal advice. The legal profession's reaction to these sites and suggestions on how to address professional and ethical concerns are discussed.     

The Research University and Education for Librarianship: Considerations for User-Centered Professionals in Libraries

Research libraries and schools of library and information science education face a similar challenge, namely how do they fit into the university of the future? To explore this challenge some limits must be made on the range of discussion. First, this paper looks at librarian education programs that operate within research universities and are expected to strive to fulfill the mission of a research institution. Second, for the sake of discussion, the library in the research university is characterized-recognizing that this topic will be explored more fully by other contributors to this volume. Third, librarian educators are often disarmed by trying to address at every turn the full spectrum of concerns regarding preparation of librarians and information professionals. This paper focuses on the preparation of librarians for the research environment recognizing that some of the issues addressed here relate to the preparation of all librarians.

The ACRL Framework for Information Literacy in Higher Education: Implications for Health Sciences Librarianship

The Association of College and Research Libraries is developing a new framework of information literacy concepts that will revise and replace the previously adopted standards. This framework consists of six threshold concepts that are more flexible than the original standards, and that work to identify both the function and the feelings behind information literacy education practices. This column outlines the new tentative framework with an eye toward its implications for health sciences libraries, and suggests ways the medical library community might work with this new document.

Reference Librarianship:

The current developments in technology and the various societal forces that are driving the major changes in librarianship are very similar to what was recognized as the birth of reference services during the latter half of the nineteenth century. Reference services evolved partly as a result of the spread of education which was iin a state of explosive development. As the general population of the time became better educated, more emphasis was put on the use of the library as an integral part of the educational curriculum. Libraries realized they needed skilled smmg to explain or instruct users in how to use the library and the collections. The intermediary between users and the library collections eventually came to be called reference librarians. From these beginnings, the role of reference librarianship has evolved to its present state. This paper discusses the current state of reference librarianship and the roles and duties of today's reference librarians.
