Animal Rights and Animal Welfare: Historical Resources

SUMMARY

Although literature of the animal rights movement can be traced back to ancient philosophers, the animal rights movement as we know it today has a relatively brief history. This article identifies some of the key works in recent literature in the history of animal rights. Included are reviews intended to aid librarians in selecting titles in animal rights and animal welfare history. Works are divided into two categories: bibliographies and general historical works.

This article lists additional resources that warrant consideration, with sources on animals in human thought, general animal rights and welfare, hunting, animal intelligence and behavior, and anti-animal-rights works.     

The Human-Companion Animal Bond

SUMMARY

The author provides brief annotated references of basic resources on the “human-animal bond,” the relationship between people and pets (“companion animals”) throughout history. Types of human-animal relationships are very diverse, and the author offers examples of many, including animal-assisted therapies, pet-keeping, and training styles.     

馆藏动物剥制标本的管理及预防性保护

动物剥制标本作为自然博物馆、高校博物馆、部分综合性博物馆以及科研机构标本馆的重要收藏对象和展示资源,具有极高的收藏价值、展览价值、艺术价值、科研价值和科普教育价值等,但在长期保藏过程中,因受制作工艺、环境条件、人为活动的影响,极易受到损坏。本文论述了馆藏动物剥制标本的常规管理、保藏环境管理以及预防性保护,旨在为我国自然标本管理,特别是为动物剥制标本的管理和保藏工作提供参考资料。     

《中图法》“畜牧”类目的比较研究

结合《中国科学院图书馆图书分类法》、《国会图书馆分类法》，对《中国图书馆分类法》“畜牧”类目的体系结构、部分下位类进行了比较研究。

博物馆捐赠作为当前社会公益捐赠的一种重要形式,成为馆方丰富展品,提高馆藏水平,更好地开展科学普及,推进生态文明建设的方式,日渐被大众认可和推崇。在“人类命运共同体”理念的影响下,博物馆捐赠成为国际公益慈善捐赠的趋势之一。跨国跨境捐赠动植物标本和文物藏品已成为博物馆界捐赠常态,国内博物馆接受境外慈善团体或个人捐赠的机制日渐成熟。捐赠活动在极大地推动中国博物馆事业发展和国际交流的同时,也对博物馆行业提出新的业务要求。如何精准对接进出口管理部门,正确解读和运用国家相关政策法规,高效办理各项相关手续以及其他工作流程,正成为博物馆学的一个新兴分支。

The author provides a list of print and on-line guides useful to librarians who want to begin to tap the Internet's vast potential for undergraduates.     

基于主题相关分析的跨学科主题发现方法及实证研究——以动物资源与育种领域为例

[目的/意义] 针对单学科和双学科主题发现方法无法挖掘现有交叉文献中主题演化来源的问题,提出面向跨学科的主题发现方法,为跨学科发展和合作提供依据。[方法/过程] 首先在动物资源与育种领域期刊文献数据中选取已经出现交叉现象的两个基础学科文献及其交叉文献,使用改进的主题相关分析方法,提取共同主题和各自的独立主题;然后利用相关性测度方法量化不同学科独立主题的相关性;最后对共同主题和相似性较高的独立主题进行具体分析。[结果/结论] 在动物资源与育种领域的农学生殖生物学、兽医学以及其交叉文献上进行实验验证,结果表明所提出的方法能够有效发现交叉主题的学科出处。     

Sources for Russian Book Inflation Data

The article examines five major sources of data on inflation in Russian book prices: professional book magazines, organizations' publications and Web sites, vendor catalogs, the reports written by John and Kristine Bushnell, and automated library management systems. The author discusses the limits, advantages, and methodologies for each of them.     

国内信息生态理论研究文献计量分析

对1990～2009年期间国内学者在期刊上发表的研究信息生态理论的论文,从年代分布、期刊发布、论文作者情况、核心作者分布、论文合作情况、基金项目、研究主题几方面进行计量分析,系统梳理了信息生态理论的研究现状,揭示了我国在此方面的基本研究概况。     

Sources of Conservation Information for the Librarian

Library collections contain items that will be required by readers in the future. These materials, all of which present difficult preservation problems, are found in formats as varied as papyrus and computer tape. Only recently have we come to realize that the deterioration of these resources is a significant threat. This article considers the literature on library and archives conservation and suggests some points of departure for librarians beginning a journey into the area of library preservation.     

Media Reference Sources for an Academic Library

Summary

On the surface many media reference questions seem simple to answer. However, the lack of reference tools often hinders the reference librarian's ability to answer even the most straightforward query. In some cases, the library simply has an inadequate collection, lacking necessary sources. In other cases, the reference tools simply do not exist. Experienced academic media librarians develop toolkits, consisting of published sources and Internet sources that allow us to provide quality reference service, despite the challenges. The appended annotated bibliography represents one librarian's media reference toolkit. Although some of the sources will vary from library to library, many of these sources are essential to effective media reference work regardless of the Specific institution.     

Endangered Species: Selected Resources for Libraries

SUMMARY

This article provides an annotated overview of recently published works related to the topic of endangered species. Books about specific species; particular regions of the world; the economic, political and social complexities of protection efforts; legal aspects of protection and conservation; and the cultural and societal impacts of endangerment, conservation and extinction are included. Recommendations are made regarding suitability for various types of libraries.     

Animals in Religion: Resources for Libraries

SUMMARY

This article introduces the subject of animals as viewed by the world's religions. It disputes the common perception that Eastern religions are entirely “animal friendly” while Western religions are wholly uncaring toward animals. The author reviews print-resources on the status of animals in world religions to assist librarians in collection development. The reviews are categorized to suggest which resources would be most appropriate for: all libraries; public libraries; and academic libraries.     

Basic Sources for Locating Lawyers and Judges:

A suggested core list of reference works useful for a locating attorneys, judges, and courts is presented. The type of information contained in entries as well as the method of arrangement for each work are discussed. Any unusual or significant features are also noted.     

Navigating the Maze: Sources for press historians

Television history channels and programming have seen considerable growth in recent years, yet empirical research on television history audiences remains limited. This essay argues that media history scholars need better to understand what happens when audiences consume television history, examining the critical debates concerning the genre's specific modalities of rendering the past on screen before exploring what opportunities and problems it affords viewers. The essay draws on original qualitative, empirical research on audiences of historical reality television through a specific, small-scale case study of BBC Wales' Coal House at War (Indus 2008). It argues for the need to retain a dual focus upon such programming's historical content and its televisuality if we are to appreciate the intricacies of viewers' cultural consumption. The essay concludes by demonstrating that audiences' own oral and written responses to television history reveal something of how people, situated in their specific times and places, understand both their past and their present.     

A Survey of the Reference Sources for Holistic Medicine

Holistic medicine and therapeutic systems are increasingly popular health care alternatives. Reference librarians, when asked about subjects pertaining to the vast field of holistic health, have found the bibliographic resources to be obscure, confusing, and inconsistent. The first two sections of this article discuss the subject access that is provided by Library of Congress and National Library of Medicine subject headings. In the final section there is an annotated bibliography of the chief reference sources for the field. Reference librarians are encouraged to work through the difficulties of finding answers in this field and to treat such queries as typical consumer health care questions.
