运用阈概念将信息素养教育嵌入环境科学专业的实践及效果评估

[目的/意义] 探索运用阈概念将信息素养教育嵌入环境科学专业课程教学实践的方法,通过对硕士研究生课程作业及其硕士学位论文开题报告的考核,对课程的效果做出评估,进而说明课程的意义。[方法/过程] 嵌入式课程主要包括科研信息资源介绍、文献检索方法及结果分析、参考文献管理技巧、科技论文写作方法和文章从投稿到发表过程介绍。教学效果通过参加嵌入式课程和未参加课程的硕士研究生开题报告比较以及两个年级参加课程研究生的作业和开题报告考核结果的相关性分析评估。[结果/结论] 接受嵌入式课程的硕士研究生,在开题报告的调研深度、写作规范程度、参考文献选刊和引用规范方面比对照组有显著提高,其课程作业和开题报告文献引用的规范程度有很好的线性关系。嵌入式课程对学生科研能力的提高具有积极意义。     

Embedding General Education Competencies into an Online Information Literacy Course

ABSTRACT

Assessing core competencies for students who are enrolled in purely online programs poses a challenge to colleges and universities. Our institution has chosen an existing online information literacy course to incorporate and assess general education competencies for an overseas cohort of transfer students. This article presents a brief overview of the course and describes the way in which the course was redesigned to embed and assess the five general education competencies (critical thinking, information literacy, critical reading, quantitative reasoning, and writing).     

Using Electronic Course Reserves to Promote Information Literacy of First-Year Students in a University Writing Program

Abstract

The University of Florida is a large research institution with a freshman class of more than seven thousand students out of a total enrollment of about fifty thousand.Although a partnership with the University Writing Program has allowed the Libraries to reach almost four thousand students this past academic year, certain barriers still exist. There are just too many students to reach and the content is too vast to cover in only a single fifty-minute class period.Furthermore, problems encountered while working with students, as well as with their graduate writing instructors who run the classes, have reduced the effectiveness of the current library sessions.To solve these problems, our instruction team created targeted information literacy activities online, so writing instructors could have students complete them outside of class. This article covers some of the challenges in coordinating a first-year information literacyprogram in a large university setting and how electronic course reserves can be used creatively to deliver the desired content.     

Taking Library 2.0 to the Next Level: Using a Course Wiki for Teaching Information Literacy to Honors Students

ABSTRACT

How do educators capitalize on students’ comfort with ubiquitous communications in order to develop information literacy skills required in the 21st century? A curriculum materials librarian and a professor in the School of Education present an approach that uses library instruction, online research scaffolds, and peer evaluation within a class wiki to enhance student research practices and academic achievement. The explosion of information sources and access to networked technologies has provided the opportunity to “ratchet up” the expectations for student research in higher education. The Association of College & Research Libraries's information literacy standards for higher education provide a framework for setting these expectations. The authors describe features of an introductory education course that seeks to enhance honors freshman students’ knowledge of library research resources, efficient research skills, and scholarly writing, as described in these standards.     

Assessing the Library Needs and Preferences of Off-Campus Students

Abstract

In order to have a successful library program for distance education students, librarians must understand who their students are, as well as what their students want and need. Of course, the best way to get this information is to ask the students. The ACRL Guidelines for Distance Learning Library Services emphasize this point, encouraging librarians to regularly survey students involved in distance education and off-campus programs. This paper is based on two student surveys, one conducted by the Coordinator of Library Services for Distance Education at the University of Iowa and the other conducted by the Distance Librarian at University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. The paper focuses on the issues that librarians confront when they conduct a survey of distance education students. In addition, it covers details on writing and developing a survey instrument, including the need to ask the right questions in a proper manner and the need to arrange the questions and information in a user-friendly format. The results of the two surveys are presented, including a comparison of some data between the two programs.     

Librarians,Faculty, and the Writing Center Partnering to Build an Interdisciplinary Course: A Case Study at the University of Houston,USA

This article covers how an interdisciplinary course was developed using the expertise and resources of a history professor, the history and psychology subject librarians, and the university's writing center. The course, supported by a grant, was aimed at helping students improve their research, information literacy, and writing skills across disciplines. The article discusses the involvement of the partners from the initial planning stages to its conclusion, focusing especially on how the librarians created a library session, course-specific guide, annotated bibliography assignment and grading rubric, and how these were used as opportunities to interact with the students throughout the course. Also covered are research and writing challenges, especially for English-language learner students, and how they were addressed by all the partners. It also discusses how the librarians used this experience to seek out opportunities to create similar collaborations with other instructors, and to strengthen ties with support services on campus.     

计算机模拟的项目式学习单元设计框架

项目式学习是新兴科学教育的重要模式,近年来成为学习科学的重要研究领域,但在中国的发展却举步维艰,一方面受制于我国的教育国情,另一方面囿于传统项目式学习存在的问题。在在线教育发展的背景下,计算机模拟的项目式学习课程为弥补传统项目式学习课程的不足,达到指向素养教育的目标提供可能。文章从计算机模拟设计单元的步骤出发,明确设计者、学生、技术在每一步骤中的作用,从模型设计维度、交互设计维度以及评价设计维度三个方面分析项目式学习课程的计算机模拟单元的设计,应遵循的原则及注意的问题,为更好地实现项目式学习的目标提供指导。     

The Relationships Between Teacher Nonverbal Immediacy and Student Course Workload and Teacher Availability Expectations

The purpose of this study is to identify student expectations for course workload and teacher availability and to assess whether teacher nonverbal immediacy influences these student expectations. Based on a sample of 198 students at a large public university enrolled in a required general education hybrid communication course, students were willing to complete more work than the current course requires, which is comparable to other general education hybrid communication courses in the USA. Additionally, students have moderate to high expectations for teacher availability. Student perceptions of teacher nonverbal immediacy were positively correlated with students’ willingness to engage in their learning (reading, writing, speaking), teacher availability expectations, and tolerance for teacher unavailability.     

Writing as an Information Literacy Tool: Bringing Writing in the Disciplines to an Online Library Class

ABSTRACT

The Writing in the Discipline (WID) concepts lend themselves to execution in an online realm, where written communication is the primary means of contact between students and instructors. The author instituted WID in an online section of a 1-credit research class and found the WID framework also made it easier for students to demonstrate information literacy. WID provides space within a course for students to become accustomed to the discourse of a discipline, writing to understand before being asked to formally communicate. This article explains the concepts behind WID and outlines how it was executed within an urban community college online class.     

Improving Distance Education for Students with Special Needs: A Qualitative Study of Students’ Experiences with an Online Library Research Course

This article describes a study in which seven students with diverse disabilities participated in a one-credit online library research course which had been adapted to be accessible using the best practices literature on distance education for students with special needs. Students provided feedback on the design of the course and participated in in-depth interviews. Results of this study suggest any given class may have students with different types of disabilities, with different paths toward learning. Using the principles of universal design for learning can improve distance education not only for students with special needs, but for all types of learners.     

Going mental: Tackling mental models for the online library tutorial

Online instructional design is a relatively new field for librarians. Many librarians have taken on the challenge of creating online library tutorials without the benefit of formal education and training in the field. Librarians can learn much from research in system design, human–computer interaction, and applied psychology, as it relates to the creation of online learning systems. Researchers in these areas believe that people approach online learning systems by making use of a conceptual—or mental—model of the system. Designers' mental models influence the way they create learning systems; students' mental models affect the way they interact with and learn from the system. This article compares and contrasts the mental models of librarians and students as they relate to online library tutorials. These mental models are examined through a review of existing library tutorials, usability studies on various library tutorials, and student interviews about the research and writing process. Analysis of these models demonstrates how undergraduates' mental models vary, often significantly, from the mental models of the librarians who design the online library tutorials. Interpretations of this analysis identify ways in which to design a tutorial for more effective instruction aimed at the undergraduate.     

Integrating information literacy into an undergraduate geography research methods course

Conducting research is a challenging but essential component of an undergraduate geography education. Students typically need instruction in fundamental skills such as using library resources. In this study we describe how we, a geography professor and a librarian, integrated information literacy into a newly revised course in which geography students design and write a research prospectus. We assessed student knowledge and self-reported confidence in library research skills at the beginning and completion of the course. This study describes increased information literacy among students who entered the course with a range of abilities and offers areas for further research.     

Wake Up That Back Row! Interactive Library Instruction Without Hands-On Student Computers

Abstract

A review of education literature reveals a pedagogical shift away from linear, step-by-step, instruction toward a fostering of critical thinking and information literacy through active student participation. This conceptual change reflects advances toward cooperative and participatory learning in education. In addition to the students learning more when they are engaged and thinking, we are invigorated as instructors and our tendency toward burnout is reduced or alleviated. This article discusses how those bibliographic instructors who only have one teaching computer in the instruction room can involve the students in their own learning. The author shares ways to conduct a fifty-minute bibliographic instruction session in which all of the students are intellectually engaged in the research process, actively participate in the problem solving of on-line searching, and have fun in a library. Once the students are given agency in the bibliographic instruction session, they begin to develop the critical thinking skills essential to mastering the tools and methods of library research.     

Seizing the opportunity: Collaborative creation of academic integrity and information literacy LMS modules for undergraduate Chemistry

With the recent mass shift to an online environment in the university context and increases in course sizes, the need for online learning management system (LMS) content from departments, libraries, and writing services is at an all-time high. In particular, integrated course content is needed that addresses academic integrity and information literacy skills holistically.To ensure that a large number of first-year students would become aware of the resources and services available to them for research, writing, and academic integrity, a partnership between librarians, faculty, and writing support services has produced a series of scaffolded online learning opportunities for first-year undergraduate Chemistry students in their course LMS. The topics collaboratively identified to support students include: academic honesty and integrity, scientific writing, peer review, finding sources, reading academic chemistry articles, and citing using the American Chemical Society citation style.This column will describe and analyze the program development and implementation, make connections to resource development and promotion, and conclude with the limitations and next steps for growth. The developed materials have evolved over the years, and it is hoped that by sharing our experiences, others can see opportunities for online course content development through academic library partnerships.     

Intersections: Teaching Research Through a Rhetorical Lens

Use of a rhetorical framework provides an effective tool for teaching undergraduate students the research process. The authors, a reference librarian and a writing instructor, explore a teaching strategy (model) that has evolved through their work in an undergraduate writing course. The three-stage model introduces students to their field of research as eavesdropping on, then entering into, and finally engaging with an ongoing scholarly conversation.

针对学生学术规范教育缺失的问题,提出以文献检索与利用课为平台开展大学生学术规范训练的方案。利用“学术研讨会”这一活动形式,将文献检索、资料利用、学术规范三部分内容有机地串接起来,为学生营造一个学用结合的场景,引导学生对学术规范进行探究性学习。实践证明文检课可以成为也应该成为学生学术规范训练的有效平台。     

Teaching Specialized Legal Research: Business Associations

Business associations are a complex substantive topic that can be included in an advanced legal research course that teaches students sophisticated research, writing, and citation skills. This article presents the basic substantive law regarding business associations necessary to deliver instruction about advanced legal research, writing, and citation. This article also offers a model syllabus with suggested sources and assignments for students. These research assignments require students to perform tasks such as citing primary and secondary sources, learning advanced research skills using loose-leaf materials, assimilating information from multiple sources into cogent narratives, locating information using various electronic resources, digests, and other secondary sources, and locating and using forms pertinent to business association agreements. This article also provides an instructor with twenty-five suggested sources to use in assigning materials to students. These sources consist of both print and electronic versions. They additionally consist of treatises, monographs, guides, model statutory materials, electronic databases, Web sites, form guides, casebooks, a digest, and a citation manual.     

Interlibrary Loan Internet Accessible Database (ILLiad)

Abstract

One year after the implementation of the Interlibrary Loan Internet Accessible Database (ILLiad) software, a patron satisfaction Interlibrary Loan user service study was conducted at Ellender Memorial Library, Nicholls State University, by the Interlibrary Loan Librarian. A questionnaire with sixteen questions was distributed to faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students. The data received was entered into Microsoft Excel and converted into the SPSS system. Frequency tables were produced. The outcome of the user study was recorded in a PowerPoint presentation with slides of statistical data graphs. The ILLiad user study produced a high rating of the ILLiad system and confirms that sixty percent of the participants were faculty members who are committed to research and in need of accessing additional research resources for their writing, presenting and publishing of professional papers. Faculty and students have shown their gratitude to Interlibrary Loan Services, confirming the main purpose of interlibrary loans is for research and degree programs. Many institutions provide this privilege only for their faculty and graduate students. Ellender Memorial Library encourages undergraduate students who are striving for excellence in their studies to use Interlibrary Loan Services. It can be surmised that the ILLiad electronic and web-based services are more efficient, and that patrons are more computer literate than ever before and favor the new technology and advanced services in our institution.     

基于文献调研的国内外研究生信息素养教育实践进展

[目的/意义]运用文献调研方法,对2000年以来国内外研究生信息素养教学实践研究论文进行归纳梳理,探讨教学模式及教学内容变化新趋势,为国内同行开展研究生信息素养教育提供参考。[方法/过程]分别以Web of Science平台的SCI-E及SSCI数据库和中国知网的中国学术期刊网络出版总库为研究对象,收集国内外自2000年以来发表的有关研究生信息素养教育的期刊论文,通过分析研究生信息素养教学模式与教学内容,总结新环境下研究生信息素养教育的主要研究成果。[结果/结论]近年来嵌入式信息素养教育得到进一步应用与推广,基于学习项目或研究任务的信息素养教育、基于同伴培训的信息素养教育及"翻转课堂"的应用具有借鉴意义,而文献综述与写作技能、科技查新、数据素养等可以作为信息素养教育的拓展。研究生信息素养教育应以课程教学为主,开展更广泛的合作,尤其是引入写作、出版方面的专家;重视与专业课程结合,培养专业技能及信息能力;仍要重视研究生检索技能的培养并需要系统的信息素养评价工具或评价体系来测试研究生信息素养能力及评估信息素养教育效果。     

数字图书馆的专业教育(英文)

数字图书馆的专业教育近几年来在美国及其他国家迅速发展。网络调查显示大学开设数字图书馆专业课程的数字4年内增加了3倍。目前不但专业信息管理及图书馆院系设置此课程,计算机、通信及工程学院也设置类似课程。从对40多所大学数字图书馆课程的教学大纲、学习重点、课题项目及选用教科书的研究分析中可以看出,多数院系重视学生的实际操作本领,一些注重数字图书馆学的系统教育,一些偏重网络及计算机软件技术的教育。虽然占领先地位的并非都是传统的图书馆院系,有些教授内容也未全部使用此领域的最新研究成果,但将数字图书馆作为一门新学科内容,训练学生掌握使用这门新技能,已成为信息学、信息与计算机技术和信息管理大学课程中的一个热点。数字图书馆专业教育的迅速发展反映了信息管理及图书馆学教育的一个新趋势。
