This study investigated how achievement goals are combined to affect students’ learning. We used a multiple goals perspective, based on mastery (i.e., mastery approach) and performance (including both approach and avoidance components) goals, to examine the achievement goal patterns of 1697 Singapore Secondary 3 students in their math study. Four types of goal clusters emerged from latent class cluster analyses: Diffuse (moderate multiple), Moderate Mastery (moderate mastery/low performance approach and avoidance), Success Oriented (moderate mastery/high performance approach and avoidance), and Approach (high mastery and performance approach/low performance avoidance). Analyses of covariance were conducted to compare these four clusters on eleven cognitive, behavioral, and affective learning outcomes. In general, students in the Success Oriented and Approach groups were higher on self-efficacy, subjective task values, class engagement, homework engagement, time management, and meta-cognitive self-regulation than those in the other two groups. In addition, students in the Approach and Moderate Mastery groups were more likely to make effort when encountering difficulties in learning math, showed lower test anxiety, lower negative affect, and achieved higher scores in math than students in the other two groups. These findings suggest that the goal profile with high mastery and performance approach goals combined with low performance avoidance goals is most beneficial for learning, whereas high performance approach goals, when associated with performance avoidance goals, have some negative effects on affective outcomes. The patterns help to refine distinctions in performance goals, and are discussed in the context of academic achievement in Singapore. 相似文献

This paper presents an analysis of educational technology research with specific emphasis on determining how the research goals pursued and methods used have evolved over the 25-year period from 1989 through 2014. For this study, the contents of the Educational Technology Research and Development journal were analyzed over two six-year periods, first from 1989 to 1994 and second from 2009 to 2014, to identify the goals and methods of the studies specifically designated in the journal as “research papers.” Results indicate trends in the goals and methods employed in educational technology research that have implications for future research directions as well as for the preparation of graduate students and early career scholars to conduct educational technology research. 相似文献

This study examined parents’ goals for reading ABC books with their children and their perceptions of page features. Factor analysis of a questionnaire answered by 225 parents of junior and senior kindergarten students revealed four goals for reading alphabet books. In order of importance as rated by parents the goals were: Learning to Read, Enjoyment and Bonding, Learning from Books, and Soothing the Child. Maternal education, number of ABC books owned, and ABC book reading frequency were related to parents’ goals. When viewing ABC pages, parents rated pages with little text, simple illustrations, and letter sound-word consistency as more appropriate for fulfilling purposes related to learning to decode than pages with a lot of text, complex illustrations, and letter sound-word violations. These perceptions are congruent with previous research and experts’ advice. However, parents rated pages with more complex illustrations as more appropriate for enjoyment, potentially putting books with complex illustrations at cross purposes with the previous goals. 相似文献

Although many motivational theories have emphasized that person- and situation-based aspects should be recognized simultaneously when explaining actual learning behavior, not much is known about the occurrence of state goals. The model of adaptive learning (Boekaerts & Niemivierta, 2000) proposes that state goals are influenced by trait goals, perceptions of the situation (i.e., appraisals), and interactions between trait goals and appraisals. Nevertheless, empirical evidence for this model is scarce. The present study aimed to overcome this research deficit by integrating trait goals and appraisals as well as their interactions in explaining state goals in authentic learning episodes. As suggested by Boekaerts and Niemivierta (2000), we adopted a multiple-goal approach and included achievement goals (i.e., mastery, performance-approach, and performance-avoidance goals) as well as well-being goals (i.e., affiliation and work-avoidance goals). They outlined the meaning of perceived relevance and autonomy for learning behavior. Therefore, we included both appraisals in our study. Using longitudinal data with one trait and two state measurements (N = 542), we applied structural equation modeling to test three different effect models with latent variables: an additive effect model, a reactive effect model, and an interaction effect model. Our data did not fit the reactive effect model: Trait goals did not impact appraisals. The joint influence of trait goals and appraisals on state goals was not unitary but multiform: Additive and multiplicative relations between trait goals and appraisals explained the occurrence of state goals. State goals are important predictors of proximal learning behavior. Thus, these results are important for theory development and for practitioners. 相似文献

Explicitly informing students about learning goals has been argued to foster intentional learning. This study tested three
theoretical hypotheses regarding the facilitating effects of learning goals by investigating 72 students’ actual reading behaviour
and cognitive processes (i.e., the use of learning goals). Participants studied a text presented on 15 separate computer screens
with/without learning goals. In line with the three hypotheses, the analyses focused on three aspects: students’ interpretations
of the learning goals, information selection processes and monitoring behaviour. Results indicated variability among students
in their perceptions of the learning goals in terms of goal consistency and specificity. Students in the learning goal condition
recorded more goal-relevant information in their notes. However, only few students deliberately used learning goals to monitor
their goal-directed activities while studying the text. Analysis of students’ reading behaviour and cognitive processes suggests
that the absence of significant performance differences between the conditions can be explained by referring to students’
actual use of learning goals. 相似文献

Peer observation of teaching can provide valuable insights into effective educational practices. By adopting a developmental focus, peer observation can also provide insights into how practices might be enhanced and, importantly, how enhancements in practices might be aligned to teachers’ development goals. However, a review of peer observation of teaching undertaken at Australian universities demonstrates that observation instruments and protocols typically do not explicitly afford alignment of peers’ observations with teachers’ developmental goals. Analysis of observers’ uses of popular peer observation instruments through the deployment of the Peer Assisted Teaching Scheme through multiple institutions across Australia has informed the development and trial of a novel observation instrument and protocol design that is aligned with observer use characteristics, and provides a focus on development goals. This study will be of interest to teachers and academic developers researching and implementing goal-oriented curricular and pedagogical development through peer observation. 相似文献

Relationships among properties of college students’ self-set academic goals and academic achievement
The major purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among properties of college students’ self-set academic goals and academic achievement, using multiple theoretical perspectives. Using a personal goal-based research methodology, college students enrolled in a learning-to-learn course (N?=?130) were asked to list 20 of their goals (academic and/or non-academic). For each of their goals, goal specificity, value, expectation of success and autonomous and controlled motivation were measured and then ratings on each goal property were averaged across students’ academic goals (24.75% of all goals) to predict students’ grade point average (GPA) for the semester. Regression results suggested a positive affect on students’ semester GPA for goal specificity and a negative effect for controlled motivation; the model explained 19% of the variation in GPA. This research may help to inform motivation researchers and educational practitioners who assist college students with goal setting. 相似文献

Although approach forms of achievement goals (mastery and performance goals) have been shown to predict academic achievement in college, recent research underscores that these associations are rather weak and not consistently observed. The present study tests students’ social class (in the present research, generational status) as a moderator of the relationships between both mastery-approach goals and performance-approach goals and final grade. One hundred students (45 first-generation students and 55 continuing-generation students, M age = 18.9, SD = 1.52) answered an achievement goal scale related to one of their classes at the beginning of the year. Their final grade for this class was obtained three months later. As expected, performance-approach goals positively predicted final grade only for upper-class students, while mastery-approach goals tend to do so for lower-class students, supporting the idea that different kinds of motivation could predict students’ achievement depending on their social class. 相似文献

This research aimed to study the relationships between students’ future goals (FGs) and their immediate achievement goal orientations (AGOs) among 5733 Singaporean secondary school students (M age = 14.18, SD = 1.26; 53% boys). To this end, we hypothesized that the relationships between like valenced FGs and AGOs (both intrinsic or both extrinsic) will be stronger than those of opposite valenced FGs and AGOs (intrinsic–extrinsic) and tested two alternative models: Model A positing the prediction of AGOs by FGs and Model B positing the prediction of FGs by AGOs. Structural equation modeling showed the heuristic superiority of Model B in which intrinsic FGs (career-, society-, and family-oriented) were more strongly related to mastery-approach goal orientation than to performance-approach goal orientation and extrinsic FGs (fame- and wealth-oriented) were more strongly related to performance-approach goal orientation than to mastery-approach goal orientation. The findings suggest that, to enhance school motivation, teachers should encourage students to adopt intrinsic AGOs and FGs. 相似文献

We examine teachers’ classroom activities with the spreadsheet, focusing especially on episodes marked by improvisation and
uncertainty. The framework is based on Saxe’s cultural approach to cognitive development. The study considers two teachers,
one positively disposed towards classroom use of technology, and the other not, both of them experienced and in a context
in which spreadsheet use was compulsory: a new curriculum in France for upper secondary non-scientific classes. The paper
presents and contrasts the two teachers in view of Saxe’s parameters, and analyzes their activity in two similar lessons.
Goals emerging in these lessons show how teachers deal with instrumented techniques and the milieu under the influence of
cultural representations. The conclusion examines the contribution that the approach and the findings can bring to understanding
technology integration in other contexts, especially teacher education.

The present study examined whether students’ perceptions of two major facets of parental and teacher academic involvement
(i.e., academic support and academic monitoring), contribute to the process of students’ achievement goals adoption. French
junior high-school students completed two questionnaires assessing first their perceptions of parental and teacher academic
involvement, and then their achievement goals three months later. Factorial analyses showed that students differentiated parental
academic monitoring from parental academic support, while predominantly perceiving their teacher academic involvement as reflecting
monitoring. Multilevel modeling analyses indicated that, as expected, students’ perceptions of parental academic support were
positively related to mastery goals while unrelated to performance goals. Also as expected, perceived academic monitoring
was associated with performance goals, although the findings revealed an equal contribution of perceived parental and teacher
involvement. This new insight about the antecedents of students’ achievement goals emphasizes how important is the role of
parental and teacher academic socialization. 相似文献

The link between the funding of higher education and the attainment of higher education transformation goals in South Africa, especially access by students from previously under‐represented communities, is the main focus of this paper. Specifically, the paper examines three questions: (a) How does public funding of higher education encourage (or discourage) the attainment of higher education transformation goals in South Africa? (b) What challenges do frequent tuition fee increases pose to the attainment of higher education transformation goals? (c) How can South Africa’s higher education be made affordable for indigent (mostly black) students? The paper concludes that although South Africa’s higher education funding formula is generally geared towards attaining the goals of transformation, several of its aspects are inimical to the achievement of these goals. Further, declining public funding of higher education and frequent tuition fee increases by public universities vis‐à‐vis higher education’s natural inclination to reproduce, and even to exacerbate, existing social disparities and inequalities do not bode well for the attainment of transformation in South Africa’s higher education. This is aggravated by existing high levels of poverty and inequality mostly affecting the majority of the communities that were marginalised during apartheid. 相似文献

In William Scott's plenary address at the World Environmental Education Conference, he expressed concerns about the relevance of environmental education research in a world facing global environmental and demographic change. In responding to Scott's concerns, I argue that addressing challenges related to development and the environment requires examining EE goals at multiple levels as well as bridging diverse disciplines. I further suggest that integrating social‐ecological systems and other approaches in environmental education research may provide a means for consilience among potentially divisive environmental education practice and research traditions. In so doing, I hope to spark debate about possibilities for an environmental education research agenda and learning organisation that spurs action relevant to concerns about the environment, individuals, and their communities. 相似文献

Prior research has demonstrated that achievement goals for teaching matter for student learning and teacher experiences. While previous studies have primarily focused on how goals differ between individuals, educational theorists and practitioners have proposed that investigating variation within individuals may be more suitable for explaining their daily experiences. To investigate the magnitude of within-person variation in goals, we distinguished between temporal variability and context specificity and tested their relevance for differences in emotional experiences when teaching. One-hundred-and-eight higher education teachers participated with 213 courses and 949 consecutive course sessions across an average of five weeks. Before each session, they reported their current achievement goals, and directly afterwards, the emotions they experienced throughout the respective session. We used multilevel analyses to investigate sources of variation in these constructs. Results indicated that between half and two thirds of the variability in goal pursuit could be attributed to a stable-general fraction (between-level: different teachers), and that goal pursuit also had substantial amounts of variable-general (different semester weeks of the teachers), stable-specific (different courses of the teachers), and variable-specific (remaining session variance) fractions. Variability in emotions could also be attributed to these four fractions to a substantial extent, with the stable-general fraction being lower than for the goals. Further, emotions were systematically related to achievement goals, with different effects being observable for the different levels. Taken together, these findings contribute to a better understanding of how to conceptualize and assess achievement goals for teaching and how they are intertwined with emotions. 相似文献

This study used latent growth modelling (LGM) to explore the developmental course and longitudinal relationships between achievement goals (mastery and performance‐approach) and academic performance over a three‐year period (four time‐points of data collection). Three hundred and fifty‐two university students (152 women, 200 men) who first enrolled in 2006 took part in this study. Likert‐scale inventories were used to elicit relevant data from students. Academic performance was collated from students' course and final exam marks in two different undergraduate courses. LISREL 8.72 and SPSS 17 were used to test and evaluate the conceptual model proposed. Causal modelling analyses indicated the temporally displaced effects of mastery and performance‐approach goals on academic performance. The results indicated that individuals' mastery goals increased over time, whereas there was no increase in growth change with performance‐approach goals. Causal modelling also indicated: (1) performance‐approach goals → academic performance → mastery goals relationship and (2) mastery goals → academic performance → mastery goals relationship. Finally, the use of LGM provided a clearer perspective concerning the developmental trajectories of mastery goals over time. 相似文献

This study sought to better understand the adoption of multiple achievement goals at an intra-individual level, and its links
to emotional well-being, learning, and academic achievement. Participants were 480 Secondary Two students (aged between 13
and 14 years) from two coeducational government schools. Hierarchical cluster analysis revealed the presence of five clusters
of students with significantly different achievement goal profiles. MANOVAs and ANOVA, followed by post-hoc tests showed that
these clusters also differed significantly in terms of their experience of achievement emotions, use of learning strategies,
and mathematics performance. The cluster with high endorsement of mastery approach goal and low endorsement of mastery avoidance
goal was noted to have the most adaptive profile. The presence of a cluster of lowly motivated students was highlighted. Findings
emphasised the importance of investigating achievement emotions, and how the different achievement goals combine to influence
achievement-related variables. 相似文献
