The identification of painting techniques is an important aspect of any research related to historical, artistic, and conservation issues in the field of wall paintings conservation. There are a variety of different methodological approaches that can be used to identify wall painting techniques. In this study, the application of optical (PLM) and electron (SEM-EDX) microscopy was explored as they are complementary analytical techniques commonly used for micro-stratigraphic analysis of painted surfaces. Five replicas were prepared according to the technical procedures reported in medieval historical treatises, and the pigment was applied at different time intervals in order to monitor the modifications at the interface between the ground and pictorial layer. The comparison of data from the replicas with samples from Romanesque wall paintings in churches in Southern Switzerland and Northern Lombardy (Italy) allowed for an evaluation of the reliability of the proposed methodology and for the interpretation of the painting techniques.  相似文献

Abstract

The standing Buddha image of Jincheon in the Republic of Korea created in the fourth year of Taehwa is engraved on a darkgray rock wall of shale. The front face has a backward inclination, meeting the strike of N40°W almost vertically. The host rock contains well-developed fine laminations and stratifications, and has small and large discontinuous planes irregularly distributed. Exfoliations make it hard to make out each part of the body. The surface of the surrounding rocks is severely contaminated with lichen and Bryophyta, and plant roots aggravate the mechanical and biological weathering. The rocks went through a series of conservation treatments, which consisted of dry cleaning followed by wet cleaning using distilled water. Broken or cracked parts were filled in or glued together using epoxy resin, surfaces with exfoliations were treated with ethyl silicate to become water-repellent and hardened. The color of the repaired parts was matched to harmonize with the rest of the image. Drainage was created to divert rainwater from the slope above away from the image, and surrounding plants were removed to control lichen growth. The bedrock of the Buddha image is deteriorated in its functions due to the surface weathering, therefore it is necessary to implement long-term monitoring and to search for comprehensive conservation solutions.  相似文献

Contradiction and overdetermination in the work of Louis Althusser provide conceptual resources for the theorization of capitalism as a structural totality, and instances of class struggle, such as Occupy Wall Street, as part of an immanent movement of movements that is embedded within and against the differential logic of the mode of production. A reconsideration of Althusser is warranted on the grounds that his early work resonates theoretically with cutting-edge theoretical formulations of Autonomist Marxism, it remains useful to any materialist conceptualization of class struggle and history, and it provides means of assessing the conditions under which instances of class struggle transform into revolutionary situations.  相似文献

Abstract

The oak timbers of the Swedish warship Vasa are deteriorating. High amounts of oxalic acid have been found along with a low pH and low molecular weight cellulose deep in the wood timbers. The iron-rich surface wood differs from the interior wood in that it displays higher pH and cellulose with higher molecular weight. The objective of this study was to determine why there is a difference in cellulose degradation, pH, and oxalic acid amount between the surface region and the interior of the Vasa timbers. Analysis of cellulose weight average molecular weight by size exclusion chromatography was performed, as well as quantification of oxalic acid and iron by high-performance anion exchange chromatography and atomic emission spectroscopy, respectively. It was found that a decrease in iron content coincides with an increase in oxalic acid concentration and a drop in pH at a certain depth from the wood surface. When iron-rich surface wood samples from the Vasa were mixed with an aqueous solution of oxalic acid, a fast increase of pH over time was observed. Neither interior wood poor in iron nor the fresh oak reference showed the same neutralizing effect during the time of measurement. This indicates that the presence of iron (rust) causes a neutralization of the wood, through the formation of iron(III) oxalato complexes, thus protecting the wood from oxalic acid hydrolysis. This effect was not observed to the same extent for other acids observed in Vasa wood (sulfuric, formic, glycolic, and acetic acids).  相似文献

Summary

This paper discusses the social history of the emergence of conservation as a profession distinct from traditional restoration. It proposes that the development of conservation as a distinct field came about through the evolution of an existing area of practice, in a changing conceptual climate which increasingly acknowledged the necessity for, and the legitimacy of the scientific model. This paper considers the changes in societal values that led conservators to hold their present ethical principles, values and beliefs, focusing on two in particular: the importance of preserving the integrity of the object, and the belief that the best way to do this is through the application of science.  相似文献
