Collaborate and Innovate: The Impact of Academic Librarians on the Commercialization of University Technology

The University of Arizona Library, in collaboration with the campus commercialization unit, created a partnership that contributes to the early development of inventions in the commercialization pipeline. The library-commercialization business-intelligence workgroup was incorporated into the overall campus commercialization business-development workflow in 2014 and is comprised of librarians and commercialization professionals working together to provide insight and decision support for development of commercialization strategies for inventions emerging from university research that aligns with market drivers. These efforts are recognized by university leadership as critical to the strategic plan of the university. This article discusses the impact of the workgroup and how the group of librarians contributed to the development of new companies, new licenses, and financial impact of economic development at a large land-grant university and larger community.     

The Integration of Libraries and Academic Computing at Columbia: New Opportunities for Internal and External Collaboration

ABSTRACT

Over the past decade, the libraries and academic computing units at Columbia have been brought together to form a new information services organization. This article will trace the history and current state of IT and library relationships at Columbia University. The expanding collaboration among academic computing services, their deeper partnership and integration with library programs, the working relationship with campus administrative computing, and participation in national and international projects will be described and evaluated.     

The Role of Academic Libraries for Augmenting Self-Directed Learning in Higher Education

Self-directed learning (SDL) has become a significant concept adopted by higher education institutions. In this context, academic libraries become an essential entity as they create these better learning environments. Therefore the present study aims to explore students’ perspective towards the usefulness of library resources for their learning approach, identify undergraduate satisfaction with library resources and services and their competency with some of the information literacy skills, and finally to investigate how academic libraries could support SDL in higher education.

对116所"211工程"高校图书馆的新读者入馆教育现状进行调查,从网站主页是否开展新读者入馆教育、设置新读者专栏、读者分类信息导航、入馆教育栏目的链接路径、内容丰富并持续更新、新读者在线学习考试等系统的开发这6个方面,对调查所得的数据进行分析,探究各校新读者入馆教育现状和存在的问题,认为信息网络时代更多的高校图书馆应利用网络和社交媒体做好入馆信息服务工作,提出加强对博、硕士研究生和教师新读者的入馆教育,建立内容丰富并持续更新的新读者专栏,加强迎新季后续系列化培训互动活动的组织和丰富数字图书馆环境下新读者教育内容和形式的4点建议。     

Starting From Ground Zero: Establishing a Collection for a New Doctoral Program

This article reports a librarian's collection development efforts to support her institution's first independent doctoral degree (Ed.D., Educational Leadership) via a citation analysis comparing information usage by education doctorate dissertation authors from six peer institutions nationally. This analysis is part of a long-term examination of library collection use among California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) doctoral students. Key findings include the relative young age among the information resources in educational leadership, which resource formats were cited, what serial titles were cited the most, and where they are available electronically. The ultimate aim is the creation of an essential collection in the subject discipline.
