Information Literacy and Research-Intensive Graduate Students: Enhancing the Role of Research Librarians

This article investigates how psychology graduate students find information for coursework and research, who teaches them how to find it, and whether differences emerge over the course of their graduate careers. Findings indicate that these graduate students are comfortable using campus libraries, prefer electronic resources, ask supervisors when they need assistance locating information, and have some interest in furthering their information literacy knowledge. Finally, the master's students use different information management skills than do the PhD students, as evidenced by the use of bibliographic management software. Suggestions for furthering the role of research librarians focus on being more proactive, rather than expecting students to come to librarians for assistance.

作者在调查研究的基础上,确定了研究生文献信息素质培养研究的主要内容,并通过研究方案的具体实施,进行了系统的研究,对研究中发现存在的问题,结合实际提出解决问题的一些建议,望能为高校更好地开展信息素质教育开拓思路。     

同伴教育:研究生信息素质教育的创新实践探索

[目的/意义]针对高校图书馆研究生信息素质教育师资不足的现状，探索如何利用同伴教育模式开展图书馆研究生信息素质教育。[方法/过程]以华南农业大学图书馆的实践为例，探讨同伴教育队伍的构建机制，探索开展信息素质教育的实践模式和效果。[结果/结论]研究生以同伴身份，通过"微课堂"同伴培训、"专题课堂"同伴助教、"微课程"同伴创作等方式来协助图书馆开展研究生信息素质教育，减轻图书馆因师资不足带来的教学压力，为同类图书馆扩大研究生信息素质教育规模、提高教育的个性化和专业化提供新思路。     

商业技术在职学生信息素养对职业技能影响之研究

采用问卷调查法,针对“国立”台北商业技术学院在职学生为研究对象,探讨现今商学技术在职学生信息素养对职业技能之影响。藉由研究结果,作为提升在职学生就业能力及工作表现之参考。     

Ice Cream Seminars for Graduate Students: Imparting Chemical Information Literacy

SUMMARY

This article provides information on a chemical information literacy program designed primarily for new graduate students. The full implementation of this program is discussed, including defining its purpose, topics covered, content presented, methods of marketing, and evaluation. The result is a series of voluntary seminars given biweekly throughout the academic year. Seminars are based either around a particular resource or database or are centered on a topical problem that may be addressed using multiple resources. Evaluations show that graduate students are pleased with the seminars, including content covered and the format. Areas for future development and experimentation are also suggested.     

Information Literacy and the Evolving MBA Degree

MBA program curriculums have been the target of criticism since the financial scandals of the early 2000s, with the main focus being that many programs sacrificed the teaching of useful, real world skills in favor of impractical scientific research, while also neglecting areas such as ethics and social responsibility. The financial collapse prompted many MBA programs to implement reforms which include adding experiential learning programs among other changes. These reforms provide opportunities for librarians to introduce or increase information literacy components in the programs. The current state of MBA information literacy practices is discussed, with several initiatives highlighted and some new approaches suggested.

大学生创业决策的信息保障研究

大学生创业面对的是开放的信息环境,大学生创业就是根据这个信息环境变化与自身状况而不断调整的一个动态决策过程。大学生创业决策需要科学的信息保障体系做支撑。就如何构建这一信息保障体系,文章从构建原则,五大内容体系,组织层面与内容层面需要解决的关键问题,信息素养与信息保障效能的发挥等方面进行了研究分析。     

Information Literacy for Undergraduate Business Students: Examining Value,Relevancy, and Implications for the New Century

This article examines the new-century business relevance of information literacy and why it is important for undergraduate business students. It then validates the relevance and value of the elements that make up the concept of information literacy with current business professionals (recruiters and employers). Business professionals were surveyed to reveal their (1) familiarity with the term information literacy, (2) feelings about the relevancy and value of information literacy in the business workplace, (3) perceived competency in information literacy of undergraduate business school graduates, (4) validation of cognitive difficulty elements of information literacy, and (5) reactions to other terms/phrases that more closely align with the concepts of information literacy in the business workplace. Although these business professionals were in general not familiar with the term, once they were informed of its components, they recognized and valued its processes.     

The Diffusion of Information Literacy in Academic Business Literature

Abstract

This study analyzes academic business journals in order to assess the diffusion of information literacy (IL) concept within the business discipline. Evidence suggests that while progress has been made in making business faculty aware of information literacy and its potential pedagogical value to them, IL is still in the earliest phases of adoption and has not yet reached that desirable tipping point.     

Integrating Information Literacy into the Graduate Liberal Arts Curriculum: A Faculty-Librarian Collaborative Course Model

SUMMARY

The article presents a faculty-librarian collaborative course model for information literacy instruction for liberal arts students. Information literacy was integrated seamlessly into a master's thesis seminar, and the faculty member and librarian worked together to teach students effective research skills while helping them make personal connections to their theses. The learning experience was transformational. As students engaged themselves with problems of the real world and shared their learning, their voices articulated insights about themselves and the world. The authors conclude that integrating information literacy into the curriculum and teaching students holistically is the key to successful student learning.     

Associated Canadian Theological Schools: Building an Online Graduate Information Literacy Course Without a Blueprint

SUMMARY

Associated Canadian Theological Schools is a graduate seminary consortium affiliated with Trinity Western University. Since its beginning in 1988 it has had a required one credit research course as a prerequisite for all programs. Several factors demanded the creation of an online version of the course as an alternative to the ongoing live course, but the literature on graduate level for-credit information literacy courses was sparse, and for online courses of this type was virtually non-existent. A process of trial and error since the online course's inception in 2000 has created a more mature offering that now meets the desired criteria for education that is learner-focused and interactive, with a priority on skill development through assignments using student-selected topics. While several hard lessons have had to be learned, the course is achieving its desired ends.     

Carving the Information Literacy Niche Within Graduate Employability

A teacher fellow project at De Montfort University explored the context and practicalities of developing a Graduate Skills Licence (Information Literacy) in answer to the current higher education drive for graduate employability. Research revealed the hidden complexities behind the development of an originally simple notion. It provided scope to create a research informed self-evaluation grid of information literacy skills. It highlighted the need for a multi-agency approach, forging new connections to achieve employability. Practice at other institutions is considered. Librarians have both a key role and a new opportunity to place themselves at the heart of contemporary higher education issues.

信息素养是现代社会中必需的基本素养,也是现代人才必备的基本素质。高校图书馆是信息素养教育的主要承担者。而信息共享空间作为一种新兴的服务模式和服务平台,其资源体系以及相应的服务体系的建设为信息素养教育提供了新的方式和内容。文章首先分析了信息共享空间与信息素养的关系,然后探讨了在IC如何利用其资源和服务提升信息素养教育的质量,从而实现信息素养教育的目标。     

Flipping the Business Information Literacy Classroom: Redesign,Implementation, and Assessment of a Case Study

A team of librarians at Purdue University transformed a business information literacy course from a traditional lecture, 40-student class into multiple sections of a flipped, 70-student classroom to meet the request that the successful course be required for all 500 undergraduate students. Scaling up required the adoption of flipped learning techniques for better utilization of library teaching resources. This case study provides key insights for others implementing credit classes or integrating similar content into one-shots or embedded work. It also describes the assessed results determined through student feedback (focus groups) and student performance (pre/post-tests).     

Building BRYT: A Case Study in Developing an Online Toolkit to Promote Business Information Literacy in Higher Education

This paper highlights the design and development process that two academic business librarians employed to create an online toolkit of eLearning supports for business students. After receiving funding from their institution’s internal teaching innovation fund, they hired and worked with two eLearning design companies to produce the toolkit. The toolkit includes videos and PDF resources that show students how to retrieve specialized resources for key business research tasks. The librarians undertook this project to increase the online business information literacy offerings at their university and better support their institution’s diverse commuter, distance, and part-time student population. To develop a student-centered toolkit, the librarians used a curriculum mapping exercise, online surveying, focus groups, usability tests, and a student review group. They also adapted the ADDIE instructional design model and consulted adult learning theory to develop a series of micro-learning supports that were relevant and useful for undergraduate and graduate business students.     

Games to Improve Students Information Literacy Skills

Abstract

As digital natives enter higher education, there is the need to improve their information skills but they often overestimate their information research skills and are unfamiliar with the library. The serious games give the opportunity for innovative and engaging approaches to information literacy learning. The paper describes NAVIGATE - Information Literacy: a Game-based Learning Approach for Avoiding Fake Content, a project funded by Erasmus?+?program. The Project aims to improve the competences to avoid fake content of the higher education students in the Humanities. The paper focuses on the comparative analysis of the students’ skills gap and the difficulty of actually assessing the learning improvement achieved by games, highlighting the lessons learned and the open issues.     

国内外信息素养标准研究现状与展望

通过剖析国内外信息素养内涵的演变过程,总结信息素养的本质和发展规律;分析国内外经典的信息素养标准、信息素养模式,认为当前我国信息素养标准的研究有必要从大学生信息素养教育出发,并应对信息素养标准内涵与逻辑关系、信息素养标准建立的权威性、信息素养量表设计、信息素养模式设计等主题给予重要的关注。      

Information Literacy for Advanced Users: A German Perspective

SUMMARY

This article presents the development and perspectives of improving the information literacy of graduate students at the University of Konstanz, considering the European background with the Bologna process and the general conditions of the German higher education system. It gives a short overview of the current reforms in European higher education and the consequences for information literacy instruction for undergraduates and graduates as well. The situation at the University of Konstanz, with its library being a leading institution in the German information literacy debate, is described explicitly. Some findings of a comprehensive graduate information literacy survey, which was recently realized there, are reported in detail. Further perspectives for graduate information literacy in the context of the library's user services are outlined.     

基于文献调研的国内外研究生信息素养教育实践进展

[目的/意义]运用文献调研方法,对2000年以来国内外研究生信息素养教学实践研究论文进行归纳梳理,探讨教学模式及教学内容变化新趋势,为国内同行开展研究生信息素养教育提供参考。[方法/过程]分别以Web of Science平台的SCI-E及SSCI数据库和中国知网的中国学术期刊网络出版总库为研究对象,收集国内外自2000年以来发表的有关研究生信息素养教育的期刊论文,通过分析研究生信息素养教学模式与教学内容,总结新环境下研究生信息素养教育的主要研究成果。[结果/结论]近年来嵌入式信息素养教育得到进一步应用与推广,基于学习项目或研究任务的信息素养教育、基于同伴培训的信息素养教育及"翻转课堂"的应用具有借鉴意义,而文献综述与写作技能、科技查新、数据素养等可以作为信息素养教育的拓展。研究生信息素养教育应以课程教学为主,开展更广泛的合作,尤其是引入写作、出版方面的专家;重视与专业课程结合,培养专业技能及信息能力;仍要重视研究生检索技能的培养并需要系统的信息素养评价工具或评价体系来测试研究生信息素养能力及评估信息素养教育效果。
