Effective Tutoring and School Improvement

This article sets out to define effective tutoring and to establish links between effective tutoring and school improvement. Before identifying if a school has improved, one must first ascertain the function of schools. If one accepts Lodge's premise that the function of schools is 'to promote children's learning' (Lodge, 2000), then an improving school is one which improves learning itself. This paper argues that effective tutoring can play a part in helping schools to achieve this goal and outlines some practical ways in which this can happen. It draws on current practice at Greenshaw High School to explore some strategies for improving tutoring in order to impact on schools' effectiveness.     

Towards a College Improvement Movement

Abstract

In this article I explore some aspects of the apparent ineffectiveness of the post‐compulsory education sector to consistently promote high levels of achievement. I examine a selection of concepts and strategies emanating from the school effectiveness and improvement movement and propose that certain of these are potentially transferable with positive benefits. The self‐improvement, or quality enhancement, trends discernible since incorporation within the the colleges are briefly reviewed. The case is made for the augmentation of these by the importation of key ideas from school‐based studies and innovations, and particular attention is drawn to the sharp contrast between the wealth of these and the dearth of research to date on college effectiveness.

Towards a Comprehensive Account of Effective Thinking

Due to its strong focus on reasoning and argumentation, critical thinking lacks the breadth required of a comprehensive account of higher order thinking. In particular, critical thinking does not promote reflection on the underlying problems or situations that people think about. This paper reviews various proposed additions to and reorientations of the critical thinking paradigm. It presents a conceptual framework that encompasses the most promising extensions as topics in a broadened account of higher order thinking. This account can be understood as an elaboration of problem solving along two dimensions: Problem types, which are generic thinking situations; and problem solving functions, which are generic thinking tasks. The proposed topic-level account of higher order thinking offers a greatly enlarged view of what should be taught in general thinking skills programs.     

有效教学：面向具体的学习者——读鲍里奇的《有效教学方法》有感

加里·D·鲍里奇在<有效教学方法>一书中认为,面向学习者的智力水平、人格特征和社会环境等具体因素是判断有效教学的准绳,其具体特征体现为五种关键行为和五种辅助行为的有机统一.为此,需要在教学中采用多样的教学方法和灵活的教学策略以及交错的教学评价.可以说,他提出的面向具体的学习者的有效教学理论决不是可望不可及的,而是切实可行的.     

Effective Teaching in School Mathematics

Over the past decades, mathematics irtstruction has undergone a ＂reform＂ movement that emphasizes eritical thinking, communication, and collaborative learning over rote memorization or application of formulas, procedures, and basic skills. Analogously, a new set of teaching methods focusing on these goals has been labeled ＂effective mathematics instruction.＂ We should view mathematics as a practical and useful applied science on the one hand, and a means fot improving reasoning and critical thinking on the other.     

School Self-evaluation Towards a European Dimension

This article describes the development of a Comenius project focused on school self-evaluation involving partners from four European countries and resulting in an international course which took place in Italy. The planning, the implementation and the evaluation of the course are presented, clarifying the difficulties and the constraints met and the solutions adopted, the weak and the strong aspects as they emerged from the evaluation undertaken, as well as some recommendations for improvement. In conclusion, some general observations are made on the project as a whole.     

Towards More Effective Evaluation Studies of Educational Media

The problem of the usefulness of educational evaluation activities is one which has been of concern for some time. Recently, evaluations of educational media have been criticized in particular. This paper identifies several alternative models for the design of evaluation studies and describes a study based upon aspects of these alternative models. Some issues and problems arising from the review are discussed, and the paper concludes by referring again to the issue of the usefulness of educational media evaluations.

Teachers' Perspectives on Effective School Leadership

This paper considers teachers' perspectives on effective school leadership. It draws upon the findings from a study of effective leadership conducted by a research team from the University of Nottingham [1]. This research study considered effective leadership from the perspectives of different stakeholders within the English schooling system. This provided an opportunity to analyse leadership in a holistic way and to consider leadership from a variety of different perspectives.     

School Climate,School Improvement and Site-based Management

This article examines the relationship between school organisational climate and the school's preparedness to undertake restructuring and improvement. Over the last two decades, much research into school improvement and effectiveness has indicated the importance of school climate for a school's efforts to change. For school-level personnel, an understanding of the nature of the prevailing climate would seem valuable in determining the school's willingness and capacity to embark on school improvement initiatives and to evaluate the impact that such initiatives have on the nature of the school's climate. The research reported here was conducted in three phases. The first phase involved the assessment of the prevailing organisational climate in 30 secondary schools drawn from three State education systems in Australia. The second phase involved analysing and documenting the principles and school-level process associated with the establishment of site-based management in the three State education systems. The third phase sought teachers' perceptions about the impact of site-based management on school improvement planning, collaboration and curriculum leadership, and classroom practices. The research indicated the existence of an important relationship between organisational climate and the school's capacity to implement and sustain authentic site-based management. Where the prevailing organisational climate is negative, tailored ‘front-end’ strategies designed to improve the climate might be undertaken prior to the school embarking on substantial school improvement initiatives. Finally, assessing organisational climate can provide information about a school's preparedness to undertake change, and a re-assessment of climate following a change initiative can provide evaluative data about the extent of change within the school. New Directions for School Effectiveness Research: Towards School Effectiveness Without Schools

School effectiveness research has made a number of valuable contributions to educational research over the past three decades. However, its validity is threatened by a number of evolutions that question the continuing centrality of its basic research object, the public school. Moves towards more flexible school organization such as networks of schools, a broader role for schools reconceptualized as community centers, the emergence of new providers outwith the public sector, the increasingly internationalised nature of research and moves towards greater use of distance learning and home schooling all mean that this focus may rapidly become outdated, potentially making school effectiveness research irrelevant.In this paper we will discuss the consequences of these evolutions for school effectiveness research and argue that, rather than lessening the need for effectiveness research, they increase the imperative for this type of research, as long as it is broadened to educational effectiveness in its broadest sense whether it takes place in the traditional public school or not, and is conducted in an empirical and open-minded way.
