The lion is an exotic animal that was brought into inland China as an imperial tribute in the Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD) when Western influences began to be imported. As few Chinese had opportunities to see this non-indigenous species, lion-shaped artworks crafted by ancient Chinese mostly did not reflect the authentic imagc of the lion.
