书目数据新格式BIBFRAME及其应用

MARC格式被认为是目前制约图书馆数据开放利用的最大障碍,已经不适合当前的编目环境。基于书目控制的历史和当前背景及需求,通过剖析新的书目框架格式BIBFRAME的关联数据模型、需求与用例、工具与服务,分析其开放性、语义化、向后兼容性等特点,提出其在应用上将遇到技术门槛过高、与FRBR/RDA等已有标准的融合与冲突、与Shema.org的竞争与合作关系等问题。BIBFRAME不仅是MARC的替代品,还将为图书馆数据融入更广阔的互联网环境带来巨大的潜力和可能性。

Using a Datashow Projector to Present a Computer Search

Librarians are coming to rely increasingly on electronic resources to which access can be gained by telephone and they want to demonstrate the use of these resources to colleagues and library patrons. Library online catalogs, bibliographic utilities, database searching vendors-all can be accessed through telephone lines, but telecommunication lines are notoriously undependable. For cost, efficiency, and reliability, computer software packages that allow one to download data and form "canned" presentations from it are becoming more necessary. This paper describes the use of one such package, Showmaker, which comes bundled with the Kodak Datashow iquid Crystal Display (LCD)Projector.

How to Publish a Library Newsletter

In many health sciences libraries, publishing the newsletter is a function of the Public Services Department. Reference librarians, often without prior training or experience in publishing, are asked to serve on editorial boards or are even designated sole newsletter editor. This paper is intended to provide some practical advice for publishing an inexpensive library newsletter.     

From an Initiative to a Program

SUMMARY

The UCLA Library has had a long-standing commitment to the attributes espoused by the teaching library model outlined in the seminal essay by Stoffle, Guskin and Boisse, “Teaching, Research, and Service: The Academic Library's Role” (1984). Information literacy was identified as a goal in the Library's strategic plan in late 2001. This served as the catalyst for the library's two-year Information Literacy Initiative (ILI). The ILI provided a mechanism for systematic library-wide and campus-wide planning and collaboration to promote information literacy among the campus community. This case study outlines the multi-faceted approach of the ILI program to further information literacy at a large, research-based university, addresses problems and barriers, and offers some solutions for collaborating with campus and library constituents. Program assessment, impact, and future directions are discussed.

From a System of Journals to a Web of Objects

Herbert Van de Sompel, Prototyping Team Leader, Research Library of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, took the audience on a journey from a paper-based scholarly communication system to a web of objects. Increasingly, the research process, not just its output, is web-based. Objects created and used as part of that process do not have the same sense of fixity that traditional publications had. Van de Sompel explored the problems inherent in the transition and the consequences of failing to proactively archive the full context of the scholarly record on the web.     

Responses to Matsunaga: It Takes a Family - a Well-Defined Family - to Underwrite Familywise Corrections

The false discovery rate (FDR) control procedures recommended by Matsunaga require the identification of a family of tests over which the procedures are applied. It is argued that Matsunaga's basis for grouping tests—that all the tests within the same null should be treated as a family, so long as there is a reasoning chain underlying the hypothesis—will, if applied in a principled (consistent) fashion, require bizarre and undesirable research practices. The underlying source of these difficulties appears to be an implicit (and unrealistic) focus on an isolated researcher conducting a single study, as opposed to a community of researchers with many studies and many tests.     

Evaluation of a program to teach health professionals to search MEDLINE

This study analyzes the search behavior of end users who had taken a class in searching MEDLINE on the National Library of Medicine's MEDLARS system. Of the class alumni, 58% obtained passwords. Most of these were still conducting their own searches twelve to eighteen months later. Telephone interviews and search observations indicated that these end users were satisfied with their results and felt they had mastered the basic mechanics of searching. However, appropriate use of explodes and subheadings, as well as locating appropriate search terms, still presented difficulties for them. Further training in these areas may be required.
