Content management for journal publishers

Despite the dot‐com downturn, content management software continues to grow in popularity. What began as a niche product for publishers, or as a means of managing large websites, has become touted as a universal panacea for every kind of organization that creates, holds or disseminates content – and since a website is a form of publication, this means pretty much any organization. How relevant is content management to journal publishers? With over 150 competing content management products available in the UK, content and document management systems are not difficult to find (although perhaps difficult to choose). But do they meet a need? Do they provide a clear return on investment? Or are they simply the latest in a long line of management and business fads, the next big thing? To answer these questions, the author created a questionnaire for journal publishers, and then carried out follow‐up interviews with key people in the relevant organization. His aim was to discover if content management software was felt relevant to journal publishers, and exactly what their interest was.     

Evolving journal costs: implications for publishers,libraries, and readers

In this article, we summarize the cost implications of print and electronic publishing for scientific scholarly journal publishers, libraries, and scientists. In each case, we developed detailed cost models to demonstrate the importance of factors that affect publishing and decisions made by libraries and scientists to determine whether to subscribe to a journal; if so, in print or electronic medium, and, if not, what alternative information sources to use. In all instances, estimates of unit cost are essential for understanding the dynamics of the economic and systemic interdependencies of publishers, libraries, and readers.     

Metadata for STM journal publishers: a review of the current scene

This article provides an overview of those metadata schemes that are of most relevance to STM journal publishers. The current status of each scheme is discussed, and references given for detailed specifications.     

MedBiquitous and journal publishers: scholarly content and online medical communities

MedBiquitous is a consortium whose members are working to develop a common technology framework that will support reforms in healthcare education and competence assessment. The mission of MedBiquitous is to advance healthcare education through technology standards that promote professional competence, collaboration, and better patient care. The consortium members include professional medical associations, technology companies, e‐learning firms, and publishers, among others. Two publishers actively working within MedBiquitous are John Wiley & Sons, Inc., and the American Academy of Pediatrics, who are pursuing their own objectives to help to create improved online medical communities.

Requirements for an Online electronic journal service

This article is based on a report made to the Electronic Journal and Learned Societies Project, part of the Electronic Libraries (eLib) Programme. It is concerned with investigations undertaken in late 1996 into the commercial services able to provide an online electronic document delivery service for academic journals on behalf of the small society publisher unwilling or unable to provide an independent service. Thirteen organizations were approached and a questionnaire circulated to them was returned by the majority. The results indicated that at that stage there was no obvious choice of one supplier to meet the needs of any small society publisher. The reasons for this are discussed and possible ways forward considered.     

Migration to an electronic journal collection in a hospital library: implications for reference service

This article provides a perspective on the migration to an electronic-only journal collection in a hospital library and its effect on reference services, information-seeking, and library use patterns. Bellevue Hospital Center in New York, NY is one of the first major teaching hospitals in the United States to begin a fundamental shift to a current, electronic-only journal collection. This article describes the process and develops a model for use by other hospital libraries, with commentary on the impact on reference services to library users. Key findings are that physicians, residents, and nurses have come to expect electronic journal collections and use the Internet in the hospital library to access electronic journals. Similar to many academic health sciences libraries, the reference desk in a hospital library has become more like a technical support desk. Users who contact the library have questions about access to the library's electronic resources or about searching techniques. In the future, medical reference librarians will continue to assist searchers who cannot find what they are looking for and will assist those who repeatedly get results that do not match their information needs.

Relevance of electronic resource management systems to hiring practices for electronic resources personnel

Requirements for electronic resource positions in libraries advertised between the years 2000 and 2008 are reviewed and analyzed according to how they relate to developments in electronic resource management tools and standards taking place during the associated time periods. The research reveals that the job requirements for electronic resource personnel have not changed significantly over these years, despite overwhelming changes in quantity of material and quality of system resources and despite the recommendations of the Digital Library Federation's Electronic Resource Management Initiative documentation, which is used as a focal point for this study.

Standards for book and serial publishers

Although technical standards that affect the way publishers work have been in existence since 1935, publishers began to participate in the process only in the 1970s. Sandra Paul, who participated in the establishment of both the National Information Standards Organization and the Book and Serials Industry Systems Advisory Committees, reviews the role of publishers in using and developing relevant standards. She also offers some predictions about the standards areas in which publishers are likely to be active in the coming decades, especially those affected by internationalization of the industry and the exploitation of new technology.
