Five years later: medical reference in the 21st century

In 2000, three groups of health sciences librarians-new library school graduates, those currently working at a medical library, and medical library directors-were interviewed about the status and future of medical reference librarianship. Five years later this follow-up article summarizes the responses from many of the same librarians about the biggest changes, newest trends, evolving roles, challenges, and hopes for the future.     

Five years later: A survey of state textbook reform

A survey was conducted to follow up the activities of a national project to improve the quality of textbooks available in American schools. The survey found that reform efforts have affected textbook policy in the adoption states throughout the country; nonadoption states, for the most part, have not addressed problems with textbooks. Changes in the adoption states are more incremental than dramatic; more diverse than focused; more in keeping with state cultures than national in character. Certain trends, however, indicate that policy makers continue to believe that their actions can improve the textbooks used in their schools. There is evidence that the adoption processes are increasingly focused on qualitive judgments about books being made by better-prepared and better-supported selectors. In addition, the adoption processes themselves are becoming less constraining on local district decision making through a variety of mechanisms.     

Japanese manga in translation and American graphic novels: A re-examination of the collections in 36 academic libraries ten years later

Ten years ago, this journal published an article comparing the collection rates of Japanese manga in English translation and American graphic novels (“American” defined as graphic novels published in North America and originally written in English) in 44 American academic libraries in 2007 and 2008 (Masuchika & Boldt, 2010). The results showed that American graphic novels were being added to American academic libraries at a faster pace than translated Japanese manga. With the growing popularity of both manga and graphic novels, it was time to revisit this phenomenon and see if any changes had occurred in collection rates within the last ten years. This study revealed that while graphic novels were being added at a significantly faster pace, manga showed no increase in the rates they were being added ten years ago.

10年来中国传媒经济研究回顾——对1996年至2005年《新闻与传播研究》《新闻大学》的实证分析

本文通过对新闻传播学两本专业期刊的内容分析,对10年来我国传媒经济研究做整体上的梳理。研究发现,新闻传播学研究者构成中国传媒经济研究的主体人员,而经济学、管理学研究者则普遍缺席。传媒经济研究具有突出的应用导向和实践特点,媒介组织经营与管理议题得到研究者的普遍关注。但遗憾的是,传媒经济研究很少获得社会资助。定性研究占主导地位,研究者大多是独自作战,合作研究自2003年起呈急剧增长态势。报纸媒介仍是研究者们最为关注的研究对象。
