This paper presents and analyses data gathered from a survey of teachers in a range of secondary school English departments. It seeks to establish the ways in which teachers perceive their subject knowledge Continuing Professional Development (CPD) needs and the ways in which they would like to engage with Higher Education (HE) English as part of their CPD. It also explores teachers’ reasons for wishing to undertake such study, and the ways in which they believe such studies could contribute to their development. Finally, it goes on to consider some of the constraints on CPD and the possible implications of this for Higher Education Institutions. The interface between schools and HE has, historically, been limited. However, engagement in CPD is one of the most significant ways in which dialogue between secondary and HE teachers of English can be fruitfully established. 相似文献

The professionalization of teaching has had undergone a long process in China's history. The training of teachers started in 1681 when the first Normal School was set up by the early Christian missionaries. But the concept of professionalization of teaching was not put forward until 1980s, when we no longer face the problem of an inadequate number of teachers. Since then sociologists and educators have had explored the concept of teaching as a profession, and agreed that teachers are pro 相似文献

Teachers’ Willingness to Adopt Nature of Science Activities Following a Physical Science Professional Development 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The major science education reform documents emphasize the need for K-12 students to have a robust understanding of nature
of science (NOS), and inservice teachers consequently need to develop their NOS teaching repertoires. This study investigated
the extent to which science teachers were willing to adopt new strategies and activities for teaching NOS in their classrooms.
The participants were 36 elementary, middle, and high school teachers who were completing a year-long physical science professional
development (PD) that included NOS instruction. Data sources consisted of surveys (teachers’ NOS views, teaching practices),
collected work, and responses to post-PD follow-up questions. The professional development course was successful in that teachers
incorporated many of these strategies and activities into their own practice. This study also endeavored to identify factors
that facilitated the adoption of these new approaches to teaching NOS. While personal characteristics such as pre- or post-PD
NOS understandings, NOS gains, and grade level taught were not related to the number of NOS activities incorporated, teachers
from suburban and rural schools were significantly more likely to implement NOS activities. 相似文献

Associate (mentor) teachers are essential partners in guiding teacher candidates into the profession; however, little training is offered for this critical role. This study explored, through the lens of self-determination theory, types of support and delivery most useful for successful mentorship during practicum. Online surveys and invited interviews targeted at associate teachers for one teacher preparation program (TPP) were used to gather data, with subsequent ordinal scale data display and theme derivation. Based on 281 survey respondents and 13 interviews, results highlighted specific TPP supports and the need for other partners (i.e., federations, boards) to engage more actively in supporting associate teachers. 相似文献

Two studies were conducted to examine content knowledge changes following 2 weeks of professional development that included scientific research with university scientists. Engaging teachers in scientific research is considered to be an effective way of encouraging knowledge of both inquiry pedagogy and content knowledge. We used concept maps with two cohorts of teachers to assess changes in science teacher knowledge. In study 1, 34 teachers developed pre- and post-concept maps in one of the nine different content areas. A repeated measures analysis of six quantitative scores showed statistically significant increases in knowledge representation. Quantitative and qualitative scoring methods indicate that concept maps are effective for assessing teacher knowledge gains from professional development. Study 2 replicated the results with 24 teachers and provided further information about how knowledge changes. 相似文献

A group of teachers?? meaning-making when they are collaboratively analyzing artifacts from practice in local science classrooms in a school-based professional development (PD) project is examined through repeated interviews and represented as meaning-making maps. The interpretation of the teachers?? meaning-making includes both their reference to outcomes from the project and their expressed ideas about teaching and learning of science. All four teachers refer to experiences from experimenting in their classrooms and interpret the collected artifacts in relation to students?? learning. Furthermore, they all felt encouraged to continue collaboration around science. During the interviews, the teachers emphasize various elements apparently connected to concrete challenges they each experience in their professional work. Implications in relation to the design of PD are discussed. 相似文献

There is a lack of documented evidence related to the relationships existing between paraeducators and teachers working in
early childhood classrooms. Based on a 2-year project with three phases of data collection, the authors explore the duties
of paraeducators and their working relationships with the teachers with whom they team. Based on findings from the data collected,
the authors make specific recommendations for targeted professional development that is designed to improve collaboration
and skill sets for paraprofessionals within early childhood learning environments. The position taken is one that supports
collaborative teamwork designed to maximize the learning of young children. 相似文献

This article examines similarities and differences in Chilean teachers’ competences, which were organized into profiles, and the associations of these profiles with children’s language development. Teacher-child interactions were assessed when the children were 12 (n=99) and 30 months old (n=73), using the Adult Sensitivity Scale, the Evaluation of the Mentalization of the Significant Caregivers, the Checklist of Observations Linked to Outcomes (PICCOLO), and Bayley’s language scale for children’s outcomes. Profiles were identified in person-centred within-group analyses of six dimensions: sensitivity, mentalization, affection, responsiveness, encouragement and teaching. Research Findings: Cluster analyses yielded three profiles. In the first group, profiles were organized according to their competence levels and were identified as highly, average and poorly competent. In the second group, a clearer distinction appeared between cognitive versus affective approaches, and the teachers were classified as competent cognitive, competent affective and poorly competent. Teachers’ profiles were related to children’s receptive language skills at both ages, and the competent cognitive profile at 30 months was a significant predictor of receptive language skills. Practice or Policy: A growing understanding of these profiles should enrich the research base and the effectiveness of promotion and intervention efforts to bridge the developmental gap observed in Chilean children. 相似文献

To address the need to better prepare teachers to enact science education reforms, the National Science Foundation has supported a Research Experience for Teachers (RET’s) format for teacher professional development. In these experiences, teachers work closely with practicing scientists to engage in authentic scientific inquiry. Although there are many RET programs currently serving teachers, there is only a small body of research describing these programs and their outcomes. Just as science learning depends on both cognitive and affective factors of learners, the success of teacher professional development also depends on the cognitive and affective factors of the participants. Thus, the intent of this mixed method research is to better understand how the nature of professional development experiences shape the kinds of teachers that apply, and what this means for the design of such experiences. This study focused on describing the cognitive and affective characteristics of applicants for two different RET programs offered at the same institution. Findings suggest that the profiles of teachers who seek out these professional development programs vary based on the programs’ objectives. The findings also suggest that recognition of who is being served in professional development must be considered in the construction of those professional development experiences. 相似文献

Research suggests that professional development that engages teachers in instructional inquiry over an extended time through collaborative professional learning communities (PLCs) is effective in improving instruction and student achievement. Still, most professional development is offered as short-duration workshops that are not effective in changing practice. Barriers to the implementation of PLCs include lack of shared meeting time and a shortage of teachers who share the same subject areas or common goals and interests. Convening teachers from multiple districts can alleviate this problem, but teachers are reluctant to travel for meetings due to time and cost restraints. Video-conferencing software offers a solution to these barriers while serving to foster the sense of community needed for PLCs to be effective. The researchers describe the use of Virtual PLCs in which two groups of teachers met monthly for one school year to collaboratively analyze evidence collected as part of their teacher inquiry plans. With help from a facilitator, these groups developed a relationship similar to other groups meeting face-to-face as part of the same professional development program. Analysis of the reflections of teacher-participants and facilitators revealed that teachers prefer face-to-face meetings, but that the virtual and face-to-face meetings provided teachers with similar social interactions in the PLC experience. The findings suggest that teachers perceive videoconferencing as an effective tool for facilitating PLCs when distance and time are practical barriers to face-to-face meetings. Practical considerations for developing and facilitating virtual PLCs are also discussed. 相似文献

Teachers’ Practice a Decade After an Extensive Professional Development Program in Science Education
Science teachers are expected to teach in innovative ways that are different from their long experience as students. Professional development programs are planned to help teachers’ development, yet, there is little knowledge of the long-term effects of professional development programs (PDPs), and especially on actual practice. The purpose of this study is to gain a long-term perspective of the ways in which the process and outcomes of a reform-oriented, extended PDP are expressed in science teachers’ practice. Data sources included interviews and documents. The study presents four case studies of the practices of junior high school science teachers (grades 7–9) in Israel, with respect to a past PDP in which they took part a decade ago. The cases are presented in pairs of a leader and a follower. Each case details the teacher’s work context, sustained implementation, coherence of tools and approaches, and adaptations. All four teachers shared the view that scientific skills are important to their students as learners in a changing world. All four teachers adopted one or two major approaches, which were the PDP’s main focus. In addition, the two leaders adopted two more approaches. The teachers were still using many strategies associated with the major foci of the PDP. The level of enactment and modifications of the strategies varied. Usability of innovations is discussed in relation to the teachers’ context. We suggest that science teachers’ professional development include the ability to adapt the innovation to their teaching context in order to sustain the changes for a long period of time. 相似文献

This paper reports research from a three-year Australian science teacher professional learning project, the Science Teaching
and Learning (STaL) Project, in which groups of science teacher participants (across years K – 12) worked with academics over
a one-year period as teacher researchers. Through reflecting on their experiences within the STaL Project and collecting data
from their classrooms related to specific science teaching concerns, teacher participants constructed cases around particular
aspects of their professional learning. The cases that these participants developed elicited rich insights into their teaching
and their students’ learning of science. This paper discusses how the cases were developed by the teacher researcher participants
and uses exemplars as a way of illustrating the nature of the professional knowledge developed. 相似文献

Since A Nation at Risk was released in the 1980s, standards-based reform has been the most dominant trend in American educational policy, and the
No Child Left Behind Act pushed the trend further by requiring states to develop rigorous curriculum standards. Though much
has been said about these new standards, less has been said about whether or how well professional development helps teachers
link their instruction to these standards. This study examined the impact of a professional development program for K-12 science
teachers in helping teachers meet state curriculum standards. Seventy-five science teachers in Michigan participated in a
2-week summer workshop that used Problem-Based Learning for improving teachers’ content knowledge and pedagogical content
knowledge. Researchers surveyed participating teachers about the change of teachers’ preparedness for standards-based teaching,
their expectations to meet state curriculum standards, and whether their expectations were met. In addition, the usefulness
of workshop activities was examined. Data analysis showed that to align teaching with state curriculum standards, participating
teachers expected to learn instructional strategies and enhance science content knowledge through professional development,
and by and large their expectations were well met. Collaboration with colleagues and facilitators helped teachers achieve
their goals in terms of teaching within state curriculum standards. These findings have important implications for designing
professional development to help teachers align instruction with curriculum standards. 相似文献

This article presents part of the research performed in a project from 2008 to 2013, regarding the introduction of the Reggio Emilia approach to Slovene preschool educators. The study’s aim was to recognize the possible influence of the training—from 2009 to 2011—in this project on educators’ viewpoints and the promotion of children’s participation in practice. We believe that a potential reform of the Slovene national curriculum should establish the participation of children as one of its key principles. It seems that the two-year intensive training of educators, followed by projects in preschool practice, has been a successful step in this direction. 相似文献

This paper considers the circumstances under which science teachers can respond positively and productively to educational
policy reforms in the area of science practical assessment. To understand what might be involved in linking science teachers’
assessment capacities and their professional development, we present illustrative data from recent research studies conducted
in Singapore and Hong Kong showing contrasting approaches taken in the implementation of reforms in science practical assessment.
In Singapore, teachers worked together to select, discuss, clarify and refine their practices as they made decisions about
what to teach and assess. In Hong Kong, teachers took a critical stance towards the new policy and learnt from their own experiences
in order to build their confidence. With the same policy initiative, one group of teachers focused more on the technicalities
of complying with requirements imposed on them while in the other group had their professional consciousness of what they
thought was best for their students provoked so that their practices would be transformed. In an attempt to draw lessons for
other contexts in supporting the implementation of assessment policy reforms through professional development work, we identify
and discuss a range of factors in science teachers’ professional development that arise once in situ professional development work has started. Overall, our intent in this article is to recast assessment reform as a driver
or pivot in teachers’ professional development and learning. To do this it is necessary, we argue, to afford teachers’ experiences
and the processes involved in learning from them greater emphasis in order to ensure the continuance of innovation in the
assessment of laboratory-based work. 相似文献

This study investigates the impacts of a year-long professional development program on Kindergarten teachers’ beliefs and practices and the association of these changes with student achievement in mathematics measured by curriculum-based instruments. Although teacher content knowledge was not statistically significantly different before and after participation in the program, changes in teachers’ beliefs and practices were both noticed: a trend towards discovery/connectionist orientation and student-centered practices. Teachers’ gain scores on a measure of mathematics content knowledge was positively related to the linear growth rate of student achievement. 相似文献
