3D finite element analysis of the residual stresses in butt-welded plates with modeling of the electrode-movement

In this paper the residual stresses in a butt-welded plate of2.25Cr 1Mo has been analyzed using a 3D and transient finite element （FE） model. Also the effect of the welding-electrode speed has been studied using death and birth of FEs. For this purpose, a coupled thermo-mechanical FE solution has been used to obtain the temperature distribution and the resulting residual stresses. Also, the variations of the physical properties of the material with temperature have been taken into account. Results show that the residual stresses in the heat affected zone （HAZ） are maximum and change along the weld and also in the plate-thickness. It has been shown that use of the 3D and transient model will lead to more accurate and realistic results which are well compared with the experimental test data.

Application of BP NN and RBF NN in Modeling Activated Sludge System

Based on the operation data from a certain wastewater treatment plant(WWTP) in northeast China,the models of back propagation neural network ( BP NN ) and radial basis function neural network ( RBF NN ) have been designed respectively and the ability of convergence and generalization has been analyzed separately.As for BP NN, the effects of numbers of layers and nodes have been studied ; as for RBF NN, the influences of the number of nodes and the RBF‘s width have been studied. It is concluded that BP NN has converged much slowly in comparison with RBF NN. The conclusion that the RBF NN is suitable for modeling activated sludge system has been drawn. An automatically optimum design program for RBF NN has been developed, through which the RBF NN model of traditional activated sludge system has been established.     

Study on the Fuzzy COntrol Strategy of Automobile with CVT

In order to study the dynamic characteristics of automobile with a CVT system, a bond graph analysis model of continuously variable transmission is established.On the base of the simulation state space equations that are established with bond graph theory,a fuzzy control strategy with an expert system of starting process has been introduced.Considering uncertain system parameters and exterior resistance disturbing,the effect of the profile of membership function and the defuzzification algorthm on the capacity of the fuzzy controller has been studied.The result of simulation proves that the proposed fuzzy controller is effective and feasible,Such controller has been employed in the actual control and has proved practicable.The study lays a foundation for design of the fuzzy controller for automobile with a CVT system.

Higher education in Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan after 9/11： Problems and prospects

The troubled state of affairs in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas （FATA） of Pakistan portends serious repercussions and grave consequences, destined to affect education particularly higher education in the entire tribal belt. Ironically, no extensive study has been conducted, to investigate those dimensions of FATA higher education which have been adversely affected in the aftermath of 9/11. This exploratory study examines those areas which have been badly affected as a result of current turmoil. In fact, the higher education in FATA has its own peculiar dynamics. Inherently, the entire tribal region has very few well-maintained and properly equipped colleges. Lack of adequate educational facilities, multiplied poor security environment has aggravated the entire situation. Law and order situation in the region has undermined the already dilapidated monitoring mechanism of education department. This state of affairs provides breeding ground for extremist propensities and radical tendencies. In reality, very little attention has been devoted to reform the education system in tribal areas. The whole set up needs to be rehabilitated by taking recourse due to the proactive role of international community. The paper concludes with recommendations for policy makers besides offering new avenues for further research.

This paper reports an experiment conducted by the author using tests, questionnaires and interviews in a senior middle school located in Hubei Province. It has proved the promotion of learner autonomy helps to improve students＇ foreign language proficiency and confidence in learning the language.     

Urban structure transformation of Lhasa City after the peaceful liberation and democratic reform of Tibet

In Tibet, Buddhism coupled with its theocratic history has given its cities and urban areas unique forms and structures. As the political, religious, and economic center of Tibet, Lhasa City has a special urban form and has experienced typical urban transformation processes for a thousand years. The city has been experiencing significant urban structure transformation that has accompanied the socio-economic development in recent decades since the peaceful liberation and democratic reform of Tibet during the 1950s. Hence, this study presents the time-series of urban structure changes in Lhasa City for the purpose of understanding the characteristics and mechanisms of transformation under the republican political system. First, the study illustrates the urban socio-economic changes of Lhasa City beginning in the 1950s via statistical data analysis. We then divide the urban development into several stages. Subsequently, we identify the transformation characteristics of urban structure by investigating urban growth, street structure, land-use, and religious facilities via maps of the city from every development stage. This paper ultimately discusses the regulation of city transformation. This study clarifies several probable issues facing Tibetan cities and proposes suggestions for future urban development of Tibetan cities.
