The NHS Lanarkshire Intranet site (FirstPort) and its effectiveness as a knowledge management tool

The use of intranets as knowledge management tools in the NHS has been applied with varying success. This study set out to evaluate the effectiveness of the NHS Lanarkshire intranet site FirstPort as a knowledge management tool and to capture opinions on what would be required of a new FirstPort 2 site to be launched in the summer of 2012. The research was conducted in June 2011 by Paul Herbert as part of MSc in Health Informatics at the University of Sheffield, supervised by Nigel Ford. At the time of the study, Paul was working at NHS Lanarkshire and he was able to give his employers a useful set of recommendations. He moved to his present post with Healthcare Improvement Scotland in June 2012. This article is the first in the Dissertations into Practice series to investigate web‐based tools for information and communication inside the NHS, but there are more in the pipeline. AM

健康信息搜寻行为非常普遍且日益重要,全面了解与探究用户的健康信息搜寻行为,能够促进用户对健康信息的关注,优化健康服务,提高公众的健康信息素养,也有利于构建用户健康信息搜寻行为的模型框架。文章对国内外用户的健康信息搜寻行为进行回顾和梳理,提出当前健康信息搜寻行为研究的整体框架,以健康信息搜寻行为为中心,从影响因素、搜寻过程以及后续影响三方面评述相关成果;分析现阶段研究的不足,为未来研究提出方向。     

全民健康信息化保障体系建设

文章通过总结、借鉴国内外已有的健康信息化实践经验,提出以全民健康保障为目的、构建以人本电子健康 档案为核心的全民健康信息化保障体系的总体目标,系统分析我国全民健康信息化保障体系的需求、问题和对策,明确 我国全民健康信息化保障体系的建设思路、关键技术、运行机制、服务模式及保障措施。     

图书馆老年人健康信息服务研究综述

[目的/意义] 总结国内外图书馆老年人健康信息服务的研究现状,为我国图书馆老年人健康信息服务进一步深入研究提供参考。[方法/过程] 采用关键词检索和引文追溯,提取与主题相关的国内外文献,从图书馆健康信息服务研究、老年人健康信息服务研究和技术赋能图书馆老年人健康信息服务研究三个角度进行文献分析。[结果/结论] 横向对比国内外研究进展,从服务主体、服务对象、服务方式三个方面总结当前研究成果、特点、困境与不足。未来应从重视服务主体多元协作研究、强调老龄化群体用户细分研究、加强理论构建和系统化实践研究、推进AI赋能图书馆老年人健康信息服务融合研究四个方面推进我国图书馆老年人健康信息服务的研究。     

The National Health Service and medical libraries in England

This paper provides an overview of the National Health Service in England, including its history, its present structure, and factors that make it different from the U.S. health care system. The NHS libraries and librarians are discussed. The NHS is divided into fourteen regions in England. Three specific NHS libraries in the Wessex region are described--a hospital library, an administrative library, and a patient education library. The problems and accomplishments of NHS librarians are discussed, as well as some similarities between NHS libraries and U.S. medical libraries. Medical librarians are urged to try to understand the medical library scene in England, so that they can Learn from the unique strengths of their counterparts there.

'Talking about my generation': a state-of-the-art review of health information for men in the andropause

The focus of this article is the availability and use of information in the UK about the male menopause or as it's beginning to be known by the general public and health professionals, the andropause. The experiences of men suffering from the andropause today are reflective of menopausal women some 20 or 30 years ago. Ignorance and fear of the andropause condition abounds in the general public and amongst health professionals. There is a paucity of information in the literature about the symptoms and condition of the andropause. The review considers the provision and use of information available for men in the andropause in the public domain, examining both NHS and condition specific sources. The use of electronic sources is specifically reviewed, including an online forum. The use of electronic sources is indicative of other health information users. The reviewer concludes by suggesting that increased knowledge sharing is required by health professionals and the general public about the symptoms and condition of the andropause. It is recommended that men in the andropause identify a 'champion' to assist their cause. This will help in gaining greater recognition and understanding of the condition and attract the most appropriate treatment.     

Perceptions of the authority of health information. Case study: digital interactive television and the Internet

As part of a Department of Health funded project nearly 2000 people were surveyed as to their use of two digital health information services, one on the Web and the other on digital interactive television (DiTV). The website was of a commercial company-Surgerydoor-and the DiTV service NHS based. This paper concentrates on the issue of trust in digital health information. Two of the main findings were that advertising was found to have an effect on trust, though the quality and type of advertising will impact in different ways on trustworthiness. DiTV subscribers who had either used the Living Health channel which carried NHS branded health information or had heard of the service, were more likely to say that the NHS was a symbol of trust for them compared with DiTV subscribers who had not used the service.     

国外消费者健康信息学研究综述

[目的/意义]分析消费者健康信息学从诞生至今20多年的发展状况,并在文献评述基础上提出建议,为国内消费者健康信息学研究提供参考。[方法/过程]对近年来国外有关消费者健康信息学文献进行梳理,主要对来自Web of Science、Science Direct、Scopus、PubMed 4个数据库中相关主题的研究性论文、综述性论文及会议论文进行调研和分析。[结果/结论]虽然有关消费者健康信息学的研究成果硕果累累,但是目前对消费者健康信息学的定义尚未统一。未来对消费者健康信息学定义需要达成共识,同时数字健康鸿沟也是该领域研究的重点。

转化医学正以其独特的研究理念和思维方式改变传统医学研究,科学数据管理作为转化研究进程中的关键因素日益发挥重要作用。文章采用文献调研法、网络调查法以及案例分析法,在阐述转化医学内涵与研究意义以及与图书馆数据管理的关系、分析国内外图书馆开展针对临床转化医学研究的数据管理服务现状的基础上,选取华盛顿大学健康科学图书馆(UWHSL)推进多机构合作促进临床数据管理实践,从机构设置、服务模式、服务内容、服务保障等方面进行分析,总结国外实践对国内医学高校图书馆开展数据支持服务的启示。     

Opportunity for change in the future roles for the health library and information professional: meeting the challenges in NHS Scotland

BACKGROUND: NHS Education for Scotland (NES) is the Special Health Board responsible for supporting best practice in education, training and development for all staff groups within NHS Scotland. As part of its remit, the Knowledge Services Group within NES is responsible for the e-Library, a national electronic resource providing and supporting access to the evidence base. The Knowledge Services Group also supports the national development of library services to NHS Scotland. AIMS: This article aims to provide a reflective overview of some recent challenges within the health library and information field in Scotland, and the positive role opportunities these have afforded. METHODS: The information was gathered through extensive professional interaction with staff across the sector over the first year of establishing the new role of Librarian Staff Development Manager. FOCUS: New roles have emerged for health library and information professionals generally; for example, in response to new technology or new user groups. The development of the NHS Scotland e-Library provides examples of role development that emerges symbiotically from core skills applied to a new situation or applied in an innovative way. Role development among health library and information professionals operating at the local service level can be both reactive and proactive. Working together, the partnership between the national Knowledge Services Group and local library and knowledge services for NHS Scotland has resulted in the emergence of additional new roles, extending the role portfolio of the local professional (for example, the Librarian-Tutor role) and supported by other national infrastructures (for example, the competency framework initiative).

健康信息搜寻是日常生活信息搜寻研究中的重要内容,与人们的生活休戚相关。随着互联网的发展,越来越多的人选择通过网络浏览、搜索、征询以获取各类健康信息。通过研读分析国内外在线健康信息搜寻的相关文献,从在线健康信息搜寻的影响因素、内容、平台及相关技术等几个方面展开综述,在梳理现有研究进展的同时分析现有研究的不足,并结合国外相关研究探讨其对于我国在线健康信息搜寻研究工作的启示。

图书馆开展社区公共卫生服务是图书馆的使命与社会教育职责在社区发展中的表现形式。本文通过对比国内外图书馆开展相关服务的实践,总结出当前我国图书馆开展公共卫生信息服务存在的主要问题,论述了图书馆开展公共卫生信息服务需要坚持的基本原则、工作目标和实现路径,提出了图书馆开展社区公共卫生信息服务的工作方针、角色定位、工作目标、内容体系等。     

An investigation into the move towards electronic journals: a case study of NHS libraries in Kent,Surrey and Sussex

Electronic journals are so embedded into practice in academic libraries that it is easy to forget that this is not the case everywhere. In NHS libraries, for example, the staff face a particular set of issues. This article is based on Rebecca England's dissertation on this topic, completed as part of the MSc Econ course in Information and Library studies at Aberystwyth University. Rebecca is E‐resources Librarian at the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust. She investigated the momentum towards electronic journals in NHS libraries in the Kent, Surrey and Sussex region and the potential for a regional purchasing consortium. AM     

Content and Design Features of Academic Health Sciences Libraries’ Home Pages

The goal of this content analysis was to identify commonly used content and design features of academic health sciences library home pages. After developing a checklist, data were collected from 135 academic health sciences library home pages. The core components of these library home pages included a contact phone number, a contact email address, an Ask-a-Librarian feature, the physical address listed, a feedback/suggestions link, subject guides, a discovery tool or database-specific search box, multimedia, social media, a site search option, a responsive web design, and a copyright year or update date.     

The Future in Three Stages: Managing a Health Sciences Collection through Multiple Moves in an Urban Setting

For decades, the Health Professions Library at Hunter College served the college's health professions programs, all housed at one campus. In 2011, part of the library's collection moved to follow the public health department to a new location, and in 2015 the entire library will relocate to an interim space before moving on to its final home several years later in a shared building yet to be constructed. These moves, whether accomplished or anticipated, raise collection management issues in several areas: geographic dispersal of programs, structural reorganization of schools and departments, and collaboration with other departments or outside institutions.     

Knowledge and Attitude of Women to HIV/AIDS in a Farming Community in Southwestern Nigeria: Challenges for Public Libraries

The HIV/AIDS epidemic is one of the major setbacks to the achievement of the 2015 millennium development targets in Africa, generally, and Nigeria, in particular, where it is the leading cause of death. In terms of age and gender distribution, the most severely affected are sexually active females in their most economically reproductive years. A greater percentage of the Nigerian population lives in rural areas where there is low access to health information. This study assesses the knowledge level and attitudes of women in a farming community to HIV/AIDS, and suggests intervention strategies by the public libraries to bridge the knowledge gap on HIV/AIDS. This article suggests that public libraries as custodians of knowledge should play a significant role in transmitting information about how to prevent and control HIV/AIDS.     

Knowledge Management in the NHS: positioning the healthcare librarian at the knowledge intersection

This paper defines what is meant by Knowledge Management, investigates how it interlinks with new ways of delivering health care and gives a synopsis of a study that investigated issues around implementation of Knowledge Management across a sample of healthcare librarians. Areas of investigation that are related to Knowledge Management include: HSG(97)47, evidence‐based medicine, clinical governance, information and communication technologies, and the changing role of the healthcare librarian. A diagram is included in this paper which illustrates how the healthcare librarian interacts with resources, staff and practices, so contributing to the knowledge base of health care. The paper concludes that Government policy, new technologies and the push towards the practice of information age medicine are forcing changes throughout the NHS. Recognition of Knowledge Management is still in its infancy in the NHS—it calls for major change in organizational thinking and acceptance by the librarian that their service must also be subject to continuous improvement.
