This study presents evidence which suggests that students in grades 5 through 8 have difficulty relating isometric type drawings to the rectangular solids they represent. Items of the sort How many cubes does it take to build a given (pictorially presented) rectangular solid were used. The errors made by students were analyzed and the effect of instruction in spatial visualization activities on the performance of middle school students was assessed. The findings were examined relative to their practical teaching implications.  相似文献

Abstract

A study is reported that explored adolescents' and adults' abilities to comprehend and create visual displays (realistic pictures, graphics, diagrams) as effective means of communicating information. The comprehension abilities of our subjects were analysed through a test which included questions on six examples of different kinds of visual displays. Their production abilities were studied by examining the visual displays that the subjects spontaneously created on the content of a given text. An improvement with age was found in their comprehension abilities: older subjects performed better than younger ones in extracting more elaborated information from graphics. On the contrary, no remarkable improvement with age could be found in their production abilities. Subjects of all instructional groups showed difficulties in following conventional rules of representation with graphics and in using graphical features (colour, size, grid) to communicate information visually. The conclusion is drawn that instructional measures for improving subjects' visual literacy at different educational stages are needed.  相似文献

The ability to mentally manipulate objects in three dimensions is essential to the practice of many clinical medical specialties. The relationship between this type of visual-spatial ability and performance in preclinical courses such as medical gross anatomy is poorly understood. This study determined if visual-spatial ability is associated with performance on practical examinations, and if students' visual-spatial ability improves during medical gross anatomy. Three hundred and fifty-two first-year medical students completed the Mental Rotations Test (MRT) before the gross anatomy course and 255 at its completion in 2008 and 2009. Hypotheses were tested using logistic regression analysis and Student's t-test. Compared with students in the lowest quartile of the MRT, students who scored in the highest quartile of the MRT were 2.2 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.2 and 3.8] and 2.1 (95% CI 1.2 and 3.5) times more likely to score greater than 90% on practical examinations and on both practical and written examinations, respectively. MRT scores for males and females increased significantly (P < 0.0001). Measurement of students' pre-existing visual-spatial ability is predictive of performance in medical gross anatomy, and early intervention may be useful for students with low visual-spatial ability on entry to medical school. Participation in medical gross anatomy increases students' visual-spatial ability, although the mechanism for this phenomenon is unknown.  相似文献

Student self-assessment engages the students in purposeful reflection about what they are learning and how they are learning it. This study investigated the perceptions of students and teachers towards the students' self-assessment ability in two Singapore primary schools. A total of 75 students were taught how to use self-assessment. Eighteen students' self-assessments were randomly selected and compared with an independent panel of teachers' assessment. The results revealed both differences as well as similarities between the students' and teachers' perceptions of students' self-assessment ability. The findings and the implications for students are discussed in concluding the article.  相似文献
