Negative Transfer of Chinese to English Learning in Lexis

Language transfer is a common phenomenon in language learning.Transfer can be positive or negative.Researches show that language transfer occurs in all aspects of language,such as syntax,pragmatics,and lexis etc.According to a research,Chinese English learners may make plenty of mistakes during the beginning of the process of English language learning,51% of which are caused by the negative transfer of Chinese.In this article,I put emphasis on analyzing various mistakes due to the negative transfer of Chinese on the subject of lexis.I also provide some solution to minimize the negative transfer of Chinese in our English learning.

Coping with Short-term Sustained Peak Demands——several cost-effective strategies

For most open universities,in fact for most universities,there will arise occasions when some online activities will have to be completed by all students in a very short time interval.These occasions usually result in a great rush to get online as quickly as possible;the rush is often made worst by the limited good choices on offer such that usually only the earliest can get the best.Choosing and confirming elective subjects,when only a limited number for each are offered,on a first-come-first-served basis is an example. At the Open University Malaysia the rush occurs when confirming offered subjects and choosing face-to-face meeting timetable.Most students rushed to be earliest to ensure choice slots in the timetable are obtained. Available I.T.resources such as Internet bandwidth and servers cannot cope with these short-term sustained peak demands.Unless these peak demands are met,however,online services will slow down drastically resulting in long queues of users waiting to be served.Providing excess capacity,if at all possible,to ensure these short duration peak demands can be met would not be cost-effective since most of the time these resources are not utilised.This paper will look at some cost-effective approaches to meeting these short-term peak demands.     

A Case Study of The Course Setting of Business English of South-Central University For Nationalities

With the economic globalization and the demand of the situation, many higher universities set up business English major. However, since business English is still a new major and research field in higher education, lots of problems exist in the major construction, in which the issue of course settings is a heated one. The author believes that as for the course setting of business English that is an important branch of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), it should be based on the demand toward business English talents from the market and the characteristics of business English.This thesis will, based on the point view of student, further discuss the issue of business English. Based on the analysis, it is concluded that the course setting of business English in China is not mature enough, which has problems involved in the content and the time arrangement. The significance of this thesis is to put forward reasonable proposals in the hope of solving the problem in the course setting of business English so that the business English graduates will be fit for the needs of the society.

How to Create a Low-anxiety Environment for Chinese Learners of EFL to Enhance Oral Proficiency in Speaking Lessons

The goal of teaching English speaking is to improve students’ communicative efficiency, or make students speak the target language clearly, coherently, accurately and fluently (Xu, 2005). However, in China, a number of students in an English speaking class tend to be passive and reluctant to speak out or be singled out publicly mainly due to their high anxiety, which, of course, becomes a significant constraint on improving their English proficiency. Therefore, how to create a relaxed atmosphere with a sense of security in the English speaking class to alleviate Chinese learners’ anxiety and to provide them with as many opportunities as possible to practice speaking English and improve their English proficiency is one of the central tasks for language teachers.his paper will firstly outline my teaching context in China in physical, pedagogical, institutional and personal aspects. This will be followed by the definition and classification of language learning anxiety, and the analysis of various factors contributing to foreign language learners’ anxiety as well as some suggestions of how to reduce the learners’ anxiety in the oral class according to the current literature. Finally, some applications will be presented in my teaching context in the hope of decreasing Chinese students’ anxiety to enhance their English speaking proficiency.     

At The Tuckshop

Recess is a busy time in our school. I believe it is the same in all schools. Soon after the bell for recess rings, all the pupils come out of their classrooms. However, we do not run as our teachers have told us to be orderly at all times. Almost all the children go to the tuckshop which sells a variety of food and drinks. We line up in front of the different stalls and wait patiently for our turn. Nobody tries to jump the queue or push others. Our prefects make sure that discipline is observed by all.

Computer-Adaptive Testing of ESL Reading Proficiency

With the advent of modern computer technology,there have been growing efforts in recent years to computerize standardized tests,including the popular Graduate Record Examination(GRE),the Graduate Management Admission Test(GMAT) and the Test of English as a Foreign Language(TOEFL).Many of such computer-based tests are known as the computerized adaptive tests,whose major feature is that,depending on their performance in the course of testing,different examinees may be given with different sets of items(questions).In doing so,items can be efficiently utilized to realize maximum accuracy for estimation of examinee’s ability. In this short paper we will introduce briefly the computer-adaptive test(CAT).The application of CAT to the assessment of reading comprehension in a second language will also be illustrated in this paper.The advantages and disadvantages will be analyzed,based on which some recommendations will be given for future study.
