THE CHRISTIAN COLLEGE AND ITS MISSION 1

“The Past, Present and Future of Religious Education” was the theme of the three addresses. Rabbi Borowitz interpreted the theme in terms of the thinking of Martin Buber. Dr. Lynn spoke to the issues that seemed paramount in the pages of Religious Education over 65 years. Brother Moran examined the situation primarily in terms of the developments or lack of them in the Roman Catholic Church.     

THE UNIVERSITY AND EUROPE

Asked to comment on Mr. Felix Peregudov's proposal for the creation of a University of the Peoples of Europe, the author concludes that the Council‐of‐Europe‐sponsored University of Europe that was founded in 1985 has a very similar scope and set of objectives. The latter, however, is an extended university, a network of existing institutions, not a compact institution like that which Mr. Peregudov is proposing. The author considers that a compact institution could not perform the tasks proposed for it in Mr. Peregudov's proposal.     

CULTURE AND THE UNIVERSITY

In this article, the author who is the present Director‐General of Unesco, gives both an overview of the development of links between culture and higher education in Europe and suggestions for the continued expansion of these links. Universities are called upon to assume major roles in the Plan of Action of the World Decade for Cultural Development (1988‐1997) and in other Unesco activities, in Europe as well as world‐wide. For the university has a role to play not only in preserving that which is best in European culture but in furthering cultural innovation and cultural dialogue in Europe itself and between Europe and other regions of the world. The university is equally well‐suited to bridge the gap between the technical and the humanistic cultures, humanizing the one while making the other more rigorous, as well as the gap between popular and academic culture. In fulfilling its role, world‐wide, as preserver, transmitter, synthesizer, and innovator in the realm of culture, the universities will contribute greatly to the accomplishment of the universal mission of Unesco.

本文从跨文化的角度,比较了中西大学的传统及其现代影响,分析了西方中世纪大学民主和求真的传统。作者还简要讨论了“科学与民主”的理念思想如何通过北京大学的传统影响中国社会的现代化的进程,以及在新的时代如何坚持这一理念和传统。     

MARGINALIZATION AND RENEWAL: EVANGELICAL CHRISTIAN EDUCATION IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY

Abstract This article addresses three periods of evangelical Christian education development in the twentieth century. The early part of the century was a time of loss of influence and marginalization within the broader religious education movement. The middle part of the century saw an explosion of parachurch educational ministry efforts to assist the evangelical movement and renewed efforts to develop professional organizations and curricular resources for the church. The last part of the century has seen a growth of influence of evangelical educational writers, publishers, schools, and megachurches on the shape of Christian education today. Current assessment, hopes for the future, and gifts to the broader religious education community are reviewed.     

THE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

The present state of the universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina is briefly presented. The needs of these institutions, resulting from the war going on in the Republic, are stressed. Also stressed is the fact that despite great hardship these universities are still functioning.
