Technical Communication Research: From Traditional to Virtual

Researchers in technical communication have recently begun to take advantage of the interactions taking place via computer-mediated communication as a rich source for research. Yet, although research in cyberspace is growing, there are few guidelines for researchers to follow. This article reviews three forms of technical communication research methods (ethnography, rhetorical analysis, and surveys) and raises preliminary issues to consider when using such research methods in cyberspace. These issues include privacy and author permissions.     

Virtual Reality Training Environments: Contexts and Concerns

Abstract

Virtual reality (VR) is a rapidly developing medium for training, entertainment and education. As yet little research exists into the efficacy of VR systems. Because of the current high cost of VR training systems, careful consideration should be given to their use. This article will discuss contexts where VR might be appropriate, present advantages and disadvantages of VR as a training technology, and present a case study of a VR training environment, used at the NASA Johnson Space Center in preparation for the repair of the Hubble Space Telescope.     

Electronic Communication and Under-achieving Boys: Some Issues

The under‐achievement of boys in secondary schools throughout the United Kingdom has been a matter of concern for several years. Recent national assessment results suggest that the gap between the achievement of boys and girls is becoming increasingly wide. Can developments in electronic communication provide disaffected boys with real contexts, purposes and audiences for writing and reading? This paper examines some of the main issues and concludes with the suggestion that the ‘frame’ provided by the computer screen has the potential either to offer a supportive structure upon which boys can build ‐ or to become yet another means by which their academic failure can be measured.

The Virtual Office: A Behavior Engineering Model (BEM) Perspective

Information technology (IT) has become a powerful tool in today's business world. One specific impact of IT has been the development of the virtual office and organization. This paper discusses some issues associated with the virtual office. Some advantages and disadvantages of the virtual office are summarized from both employees' and employers' perspectives. The behavior engineering model (BEM) developed by Thomas Gilbert (1996) is used as a framework to analyze the different factors related to performance in the virtual office. Additionally, the application of other concepts from human performance technology (HPT) and organizational behavior management (OBM) perspectives are suggested. Some future research guidelines are discussed and the need to further develop experimental and more controlled data-based studies are pointed out.

'The Gaps I Mean' - Subject Knowledge and the Training of English Teachers

The way subject knowledge is characterised in recent legislation covering initial teacher training is scrutinised, and a different model for describing the way such knowledge interacts with other aspects of teaching is offered. Recent findings by OFSTED in the inspection of secondary teacher training courses in English are discussed, to suggest that the current use of a discrete standard for subject knowledge may mask actual deficiencies in this area. In contrast, school inspection reports seldom isolate teachers' subject knowledge, even when strengths or weaknesses may be best identified in this way. The model offered attempts to stress the importance of subject knowledge for effective English teaching, but suggests a broader definition of the concept than that used in current circulars governing initial teacher training. Finally, the implications of the model for both the auditing of subject knowledge and the assessment of trainee teachers are explored.
