Activity and Action: Bridging Environmental Sciences and Environmental Education

The main goal of this study was to examine the Environmental Workshop unit taught to Environmental Sciences majors in the high schools in Israel and learn if, and in what ways, this unit could become a model for environmental education throughout the high school curriculum. We studied the special characteristics of the Environmental Workshop (EW) unit, which is based on inquiry-based learning that takes place in and out of school, and includes an environmental action component as well. We describe three approaches to the EW we identified. After identifying teachers’ challenges in assessing their students, in addition to the phenomenographic study, we suggest and demonstrate assessing the EW students by relevant socio-scientific issues. Finally, we argue that the EW could be incorporated in the junior as well as the high school curriculum as a coherent unit that is in line with environmental education in its broader sense.     

Action Competence and Environmental Education

A sharper profile of environmental education is needed to improve the quality of future environmental education. This involves an understanding of the conceptions related to ‘environmental issues’. It is argued that environmental issues have to be understood as issues in the community with conflicting interests at several levels. At the same time the authors argue for the development of the ‘action competence’ of the pupils as the main goal of the new generation of environmental education and refer to promising findings from Danish environmental education, mainly from the MUVIN Programme.     

和谐社会构建过程中的社区教育:作为与局限

“建立和谐社会,达到全社会的和谐发展是党的十六大报告新提出的一个重要思想。“和谐社会”包含丰富的内容、特征、表现形式和目标任务,其中的某些目标可以通过发展社区教育来实现。“和谐社会”是相对的“和谐”,是一个长期的、渐近的、动态的构建过程。实践中的社区教育在为构建和谐社会发挥功能作用的同时,还有某些不完善、不到位的地方。构建和谐社会需要全社会动员方方面面的力量,需要各行各业共同努力,社区教育在其中的作用是有限的。     

社区教育在社会管理中的作用机制研究

当前我国社会面临构筑终身教育体系、创建学习型社会的大背景。同时,随着改革开放的不断深入,我国社会矛盾出现多样化、复杂化的趋势,社会管理难度在增加。要充分发挥社区教育在社会管理中的教育培训功能与作用,在学习型社会与创新社会管理之间架构一座桥梁,实现社会管理的新发展。     

Change in Teacher Education: interpreting and experiencing new professional roles

In this paper we consider the effect of moves by the British Government to make initial teacher education (ITE) in England and Wales more school‐based (Blake, 1993). To monitor the impact of this shift towards school‐based training we conducted a fine grain study of what was happening on the ground within the one‐year Secondary School‐Based Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at the Chichester Institute of Higher Education (ChIHE). * *At the time the research was conducted, the Institute's name was the West Sussex Institute of Higher Education, hence interviewees refer to ‘WSIHE’ and ‘West Sussex’. View all notes Data were gathered from questionnaire surveys and interviews. Findings from our regional case study indicate that while school‐based ITE programmes may offer student teachers greater insight into school life, this should not be at the expense of developing students’ analytical and theoretical understanding of education and schooling promoted within higher education‐based work.     

我国城市社区教育的行动研究

我国提出要在2010年基本建立终身教育体系的奋斗目标。社区教育是终身教育的切人点，终身教育体系的构建有赖于社区教育的普遍开展；章从城市社区教育着手，瞄准我国正在开展的社区教育实验工作，在对我国城市社区教育进行理论和现状分析的基础上，提出了我国城市社区教育的行动构想。     

Family Education and Community Power: New structures for new visions in the educational village

Noting that differences and inequality of education exist in the United States of America, this paper presents two model educational programs that address the iniquities in American public education. The first model is a collaborative effort of a public school in an urban northeast community, the Robert L. Ford Elementary School of Lynn, Massachusetts, USA and a public supported college of higher education, Salem State College, Salem, Massachusetts, USA, whose joint venture is known as The Partnership for the Educational Village Project. The second model utilizes technology to outreach families and child care providers through a televised distance learning project that was nationally presented by its producer, Mass Interactions, and a US Department of Education Star School Grant. The Ford School's principal (head teacher) forged the partnership with the college to create a 'full service school' that provides multiple avenues of support to the school's children, their families, and community. The distance learning programs, entitled 'Taking the First Steps: Parents as Teachers' and 'Building Bridges for Excellence in the Early Grades: Home/School Partnership', were conceived as two live and interactive television series that promoted literacy development in preschool and primary school-aged children in their homes. Both educational models recognize the paramount role families and communities play in the education of children. To compensate and overcome the plight of poverty and disenfranchisement, educational endeavors need to respect the parental role, offer new structures for engaging the family and community in the education of their youth, and provide options as a foundation for sound schooling practices. The two educational models in this paper face these challenges of contemporary society. The paper illustrates how the models define and exemplify initiatives that attempt to transform society to accept social responsibility for educating the whole 'village'.     

中国—东盟高等教育共同体:价值向度、社会挑战及行动设计

构建中国—东盟高等教育共同体,推进"一带一路"倡议与东盟发展规划对接,建立更为紧密的中国—东盟命运共同体,具有深远的区域价值和全球意义。中国与东盟国家人文交流源远流长,双边高等教育领域的合作框架与机制陆续建立,务实合作取得突出成果,为构建高等教育共同体奠定了良好基础。面向建设人类命运共同体的新使命,面对错综复杂的国际新形势,构建中国—东盟高等教育共同体还存在顶层设计滞后、体制机制不健全、政策法规缺漏、教育形势复杂等诸多不适应。为此,构建中国—东盟高等教育共同体,要始终坚持政府引导、民间主体、社会参与原则,强化顶层设计、基层行动、中介监测,注重策略谋划,规范工作流程,推进中国—东盟高等教育共同体建设走深走实,有序运行。     

环境教育融入社区教育的路径研究

学校教育已不能满足全民普及环境教育的要求,环境教育必须融入面向全民的社区教育之中。针对环境教育融入社区教育的现状与困境,提出明确社区教育各参与主体的环境教育职责,提升社区教育中的环境教育师资力量,构建社区教育中的环境教育资源共享机制,充分调动公众参与社区环境教育的积极性等路径。     

Action Research and School Initiatives in Environmental Education: a response to John Elliott

This response to Elliott's contribution to the ECER symposium questions the action research methodology of the ENSI project. It is argued that there are cultural and policy limitations associated with it. In conclusion, suggestions are made about future European research in the field.

Our School at Blair Grocery: A Case Study in Promoting Environmental Action Through Critical Environmental Education

Despite wide agreement on the goals of environmental education (EE), the promotion of action is still considered contentious. Critical environmental education (critical EE) teaches students to combine critical reflection with the ability to engage in local action to address social/environmental problems. This article examines a critical urban farming school in New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward for how student action is addressed. Results found that critical learning within an egalitarian, youth-centered community located in a disadvantaged area produces students who are more enlightened and empowered to create change. However, concerns regarding funding and safety led staff to not adhere to maintaining an egalitarian ethic, undermining the individualism and unpredictability that critical EE thrives upon and producing “disconnects” in students’ education.     

Environmental Education for Sustainability: defining the new focus of environmental education in the 1990s

The history of environmental education reveals a close connection between changing concerns about the environment and its associated problems and the way in which environmental education is defined and promoted. In the 1990s, mounting concern over environment and development problems has meant greater support for an educational approach, which not only considers immediate environmental improvement as an actual goal, but also addresses educating for ‘sustainability’ in the long term. Although some education literature has embraced this new focus of environmental education for sustainability (EEFS), it has failed to outline the essence of this approach and has neglected questions about how it differs from the environmental education of the 1980s. No document exists to date which translates the goals of EEFS into guiding principles for its development in schools. Essentially, EEFS needs further definition. This paper is an attempt to engage the debate about what constitutes this new focus of environmental education and how it may differ from conventional approaches to environmental education.     

Framing a Philosophy of Environmental Action: Aldo Leopold,John Muir,and the Importance of Community

A philosophy of action consists of a theory about how and why we do things and what motivates us to act. By juxtaposing the theory of environmental action implied by the works and life of John Muir with the philosophy of action suggested by Aldo Leopold's Land Ethic, we will illuminate the importance of a philosophy of action in determining one's approach to environmental decision making. This discussion is important for environmental education and the ethics these experiences inspire because both philosophies advocate very different visions of environmental action. In short, Muir demonstrates an ethic guided by the expected results of actions, an approach parallel to the responsible environmental behavior model (REB) of environmental education, whereas Leopold, demonstrates the role of intention and emotion in ethical decision making through the lens of community.

当前我国社区环境教育资源分布不均衡,资源共享尚未实现,严重阻碍了社区环境教育的发展。针对此种情况,提出构建社区环境教育资源共享机制,并进一步论证社区环境教育资源共享机制的内涵、功能、构建原则、构成要素、运行保障及构建路径。     

Environmental Education and Environmental Advocacy: Revisited

Abstract

Environmental education and environmental advocacy have a contentious relationship. In this article, the author argues that there will always be uncertainty about educationally appropriate responses to controversial issues. Although uncertainty is inherent in this task, the choices are not dichotomous. The author also argues that education suggests a fluidity of meaning that shifts across a range of contexts, and what needs to be done will be found on a case-by-case and context-by-context basis in a mediated and negotiated third space. Some tentative guide-posts are offered.
