An opaque screen moving overhead elicits an escape response in the crabChasmagnathus that habituates for a long period after just a few presentations. A series of experiments was performed to determine whether the crab’s long-term habituation (LTH) is mediated by an association between contextual cues and the eliciting stimulus.Chasmagnathus failed to exhibit LTH when a visual cue in the experimental environment was changed between training and testing. In addition, long-term exposure to the context in the absence of the eliciting stimulus impaired LTH, both when the exposure preceded the habituation training (latent inhibition) and when the exposure came after the training (extinction). Long exposure to the context alone prior to training also produced a decrease in responsiveness to the eliciting stimulus, which confirmed previous results. However, both effects of long exposure were only manifested when the crabs spent a period of time between exposure and testing out of the experimental context. The results of this paper are interpreted as supporting the view thatChasmagnathus LTH can be understood largely by Wagner’s associative theory of habituation.  相似文献

A group of 21 hard-of-hearing and deaf children attending primary school were trained by their teachers on the production of selected consonants and on the meanings of selected words. Speech production, vocabulary knowledge, reading aloud, and speech perception measures were obtained before and after each type of training. The speech production training produced a small but significant improvement in the percentage of consonants correctly produced in words. The vocabulary training improved knowledge of word meanings substantially. Performance on speech perception and reading aloud were significantly improved by both types of training. These results were in accord with the predictions of a mathematical model put forward to describe the relationships between speech perception, speech production, and language measures in children (Paatsch, Blamey, Sarant, Martin, & Bow, 2004). These training data demonstrate that the relationships between the measures are causal. In other words, improvements in speech production and vocabulary performance produced by training will carry over into predictable improvements in speech perception and reading scores. Furthermore, the model will help educators identify the most effective methods of improving receptive and expressive spoken language for individual children who are deaf or hard of hearing.  相似文献

In each of two studies, rats of different ages were given one prolonged open-field trial. Animals of 21 days and older displayed within-session activity decrements, while 15-day-olds failed to habituate. The abrupt transition from a pattern of nonhabituation to one of habituation to a novel environment parallels the development of forebrain cholinergic mechanisms during the third and fourth postnatal weeks. These experiments conform to the suggestion that the 2-week-old rat is behaviorally similar to the hippocampectomized adult.  相似文献

A recent study carried out by European and African organizations into the potential for electronic distance training (EDT) on sustainability in African local governments concluded that EDT was both ‘useful and feasible’. This article reflects on some of the theoretical and practical implications of that study. It focuses on the connection between learning and sustainability and how EDT programmes might be designed and promoted. The paper argues that, while resource issues and poor access to Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) create considerable constraints and point to the need for policies to improve access, in general the most important factors for successful capacity building relate to the design of learning programmes that take account of the work contexts and skill and capability requirements of those targeted as learners. ‘Useful’ and ‘feasible’ depend on (i) how work‐based and work‐related learning processes are understood and (ii) the conditions to promote learning within African local government.  相似文献
