香榧Torreya grandis 是名贵“干果”和木本油料植物,为裸子植物红豆杉科的重要成员之。有关香榧的胚胎学过去有过报道,但其整个有性生殖过程,至今未有详细研究。作者就多年的观察和探索,基本搞清了香榧的有性生殖过程。香榧的球果原基在头年5月1日前已经开始分化,这时原基呈小丘状隆起,在它外面的第一对苞片几乎与球果原基处在同一水平线上。第二年5月1日前后,胚珠的各种组织已基本分化完全,并在珠心深处有一明显的大孢子母细胞。此刻,小孢子叶球中的花粉正处于2细胞传粉阶段。受精作用发生在8月底至9月初。原胚发育持续的时间很长,并在越冬之后于第三年4月开始向幼胚过渡。到9—11月间,种子完全成熟。     

A discipline-specific journal selection algorithm

An experiment was conducted to demonstrate the validity of a journal selection and ranking algorithm designed for any discipline. The characteristics of the journal generation procedure incorporate both cited and citing journals so that basic scientific research journals contributing to the research foundation of the discipline, as well as journals in the discipline, might be identified. A Discipline Influence Score was proposed as a journal weight which could reflect the relative citation influence of each journal to the discipline under consideration. Two evaluation studies showed that this method produced many journals which were perceived as frequently used journals by a group of American and Chinese professionals in veterinary medicine. Journals with high Discipline Influence Scores were also selected by experts in their compilations of basic recommended lists in this discipline. In particular, the easy implementation of this journal selection algorithm appears to be of practical use to resource-poor libraries.

The selection of good search terms

This paper tackles the problem of how one might select further search terms, using relevance feedback, given the search terms in the query. These search terms are extracted from a maximum spanning tree connecting all the terms in the index term vocabulary. A number of different spanning trees are generated from a variety of association measures. The retrieval effectiveness for the different spanning trees is shown to be approximately the same. Effectiveness is measured in terms of precision and recall, and the retrieval tests are done on three different test collections.

Subset selection of best simulated systems

In this paper, we consider the problem of selecting a subset of k systems that is contained in the set of the best s simulated systems when the number of alternative systems is huge. We propose a sequential method that uses the ordinal optimization to select a subset G randomly from the search space that contains the best simulated systems with high probability. To guarantee that this subset contains the best systems it needs to be relatively large. Then methods of ranking and selections will be applied to select a subset of k best systems of the subset G with high probability. The remaining systems of G will be replaced by newly selected alternatives from the search space. This procedure is repeated until the probability of correct selection (a subset of the best k simulated systems is selected) becomes very high. The optimal computing budget allocation is also used to allocate the available computing budget in a way that maximizes the probability of correct selection. Numerical experiments for comparing these algorithms are presented.

Contextual feature selection for text classification

We present a simple approach for the classification of “noisy” documents using bigrams and named entities. The approach combines conventional feature selection with a contextual approach to filter out passages around selected features. Originally designed for call for tender documents, the method can be useful for other web collections that also contain non-topical contents. Experiments are conducted on our in-house collection as well as on the 4-Universities data set, Reuters 21578 and 20 Newsgroups. We find a significant improvement on our collection and the 4-Universities data set (10.9% and 4.1%, respectively). Although the best results are obtained by combining bigrams and named entities, the impact of the latter is not found to be significant.
