A Gate in the Wall of Sound

This study examines how gatekeeping aspects of photography, particularly embodied gatekeeping, interact with a subset of photojournalism that faces numerous barriers to access—music photography. Through in-depth interviews with concert photographers in a large metropolitan city, this study expands upon what is known about gatekeeping when it comes to visual media. While much has been studied on photojournalists as a whole, little is known about particular subgroups, such as music photographers. As a part of lifestyle journalism, concert photography contributes to the interaction of popular culture and society, showing us visual evidence of the spectacle of musical performance. Gatekeeping practices are found not only in the managers who issue credentials for access and control where photographers can shoot from but also in the community of photographers themselves. This is extended into embodied gatekeeping in how they jostle for access to space in the pit and enforce the rules with their bodies, such as physically pushing a camera out of the way.

Mic Check: Occupy Wall Street and the Space of Audition

As used by Occupy Wall Street, the human microphone played a central role in the formation of an auditory space that was animated by the principles of direct democracy that guided the movement. However, the practice also allowed the occupiers to confront and subvert the monopoly on amplified public speech that the government of the City of New York had possessed for nearly eighty years. This paper presents a brief history and analysis of the city's regulation of sound devices, locating the human microphone in a larger struggle over the rights to public speech and assembly.     

Digitisation of the WA Welcome Wall collection: a case study

This article is focused on the partnership between the WA Museum Maritime History Department and Curtin University’s Information Studies Department on a retrospective digitisation project in 2012. The aim was to digitise the Welcome Wall project’s paper records and link these records to the museum’s online maritime history collection. The paper outlines and discusses the key business process questions that were considered prior and during the embarkation on the digitisation project. The conclusion shares lessons learnt from the project.

Contradiction and Overdetermination in Occupy Wall Street

Contradiction and overdetermination in the work of Louis Althusser provide conceptual resources for the theorization of capitalism as a structural totality, and instances of class struggle, such as Occupy Wall Street, as part of an immanent movement of movements that is embedded within and against the differential logic of the mode of production. A reconsideration of Althusser is warranted on the grounds that his early work resonates theoretically with cutting-edge theoretical formulations of Autonomist Marxism, it remains useful to any materialist conceptualization of class struggle and history, and it provides means of assessing the conditions under which instances of class struggle transform into revolutionary situations.
