A New Method of Revealing Armourers’ Marks

In this research, we performed radiographic experiments exploiting polychromatic phase-contrast imaging, a method for contrast enhancement in transmitted neutron beams by measuring a sample made with a homogeneous material but exhibiting a different microstructure induced by mechanical actions. We were able to reveal the armourers’ marks now obscured by polishing that are present in these examples of medieval armour.

Finding the Theory and Method for the Pedagogy of Teaching Legal Research: A Response to Callister's “Time to Blossom”

In his article “Time to Blossom,” Callister invites legal research experts to begin a discussion as to what theory and methodology would be most effective for teaching legal research. This article suggests that utilizing a tailored form of systems theory in conjunction with active learning methods would allow legal educators not only to teach students in an effective and understandable manner but also to adapt their teaching methods to correspond to changes in the legal research field.     

Constitutive Discourse of Turkish Nationalism: Atatürk's Nutuk and the Rhetorical Construction of the “Turkish People”

This article explores the “Great Speech” Nutuk, delivered in 1927 by Turkey's founder, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. In analyzing Nutuk and its rhetorical features, we identify the mythic underpinnings Atatürk employed to construct a modern “Turkish people.” We use this case to further our understanding of the constitutive discourses of nationalism. We believe Atatürk's Nutuk provides a profitable discourse to think with as we attempt to understand Muslim nations and their negotiation of modernity.     

Evaluating Scholarly Book Publishers—A Case Study in the Field of Journalism

By adapting multiple metrics used for journal article evaluation and replicating recent publisher metrics, the authors tested methods for evaluating scholarly book publishers. Using monographs published in journalism between 2007 and 2011 as a test case, results indicate that these methods may be useful to other scholarly disciplines.     

Freedom of information — A progress report

Public access to government records received “a quiet introduction rather than a resounding start” in 1982 with the enactment of the Australian Freedom of Information Act. Although it was strengthened the following year through amendments, the statute, unlike its robust U.S. counterpart, is a struggling infant. Among the problems facing the Act are the need to reconcile secrecy provisions in existing laws with it, a lack of vigorous public opinion and a constant campaigning in support of freedom of information, attempts to increase fees and decrease agency compliance with requirements for the production of documents, failure of the media to support freedom of information through better use of the Act, inadequate coverage of security organizations by the Act, and efforts to defeat the purpose of the Act by injections of a need to know standard.
