Abstract

A moulding of the Sutton Hoo ship impression was taken, so that a complete record could be preserved after the final excavations which would necessitate destroying the impression. Plaster of Paris was used as a moulding medium. Experiments were made with consolidants and release agents. Wet paper towelling was used as a barrier between sand and plaster, clay protected the iron rivets. Work began in the burial chamber and progressed to stern and bow. Pieces were made approximately 66 cm square and butted up to each other. Ribs of the boat were moulded separately in 7 or 9 pieces. There were 85 pieces moulded altogether.  相似文献

Rapid change in the news industry and the prevalence of layoffs, buyouts, and closings have led many newsworkers to experience job insecurity and worry about their long-term futures in journalism. Our research uses a case study of employees at an independently owned media company in the United States to explore the various ways newsworkers respond to this culture of job insecurity and how their responses affect efforts to change news practices. Findings demonstrate that those who believe their jobs are at risk are unlikely to change their practices and even some who perceive job security are reticent to initiate change. As a result, the culture of job insecurity in the news industry has a limiting effect on changes to journalism practice.  相似文献

Abstract

In preparation for a major exhibition at the National Gallery of Scotland in 2005, a thorough technical examination of VISION OF THE SERMON by Paul Gauguin was undertaken for the first time since the painting's acquisition in 1925. An inter-disciplinary approach to the research was adopted in an attempt to assess how innovative were the materials and techniques employed by Gauguin in this iconic work. The importance of the unique customs and religious piety of Brittany in 1888 to the iconography of Vision is discussed, as well as the various ways in which the original appearance of the painting has altered over time. Changes have occurred through both the natural ageing of materials and as a result of human intervention, particularly an aqueous lining and reframing. Analysis suggests that the paint medium consists of several different drying oils, confounding years of speculation that it may contain wax. The discovery that the original surface coating contains beeswax and tallow has grave implications for the feasibility of future conservation treatments. Following Gauguin's accusation of plagiarism by Emile Bernard, a tentative comparison is made between Vision and the latter's Breton Women in the Meadow. This reveals that while compositional similarities exist, Vision is far more complex, both in conception and execution.  相似文献

Abstract

We have reacted Georgia marble in sulfur dioxide (SO2) enriched atmospheres and calculated the reaction rate constant. This constant was derived from surface reduction data, obtained by leaching thereaction product from samples exposed for different periods of time. Application of this constant to marble weathered in known ambient levels of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and relative humidity, allows the prediction of the thickness of the resulting gypsum crust formed over a given period of time. We have found that the crust grows outwards due to calciumions which migrate from the interior and then react with sulfur dioxide at the sample surface. Thus, anytreatment of the sulfated marble should include the considerations that the crust only masks the marble surface and is not an integral part of the original sculpture, and that cavities exist in the underlying layer of marble from which the calcium ions were selectively depleted.  相似文献

Abstract

In the Roman period, from about 30 B.C. to about A.D. 359, Wadi el-Natrun was probably one of the main centres of the glass industry in Egypt. In this district, the essential materials for glass-making processes, mainly silica and natron, were and are still quite abundant. Two kinds of crucibles were in use: fritting and melting. The first kind was used for fritting the raw materials of glass to produce glass frit blocks. Such fritting crucibles had a rectangular form which is not usually encountered in other places. Probably this was intended to facilitate the transport of the glass frit blocks produced to glass factories in different places where raw materials were not available. Dimensions for two fritting crucibles are proposed. The body texture is coarse, highly porous and almost loose. These features were intended by the ancient glassmaker to release the frit block easily by fracturing the crucible, which was thus used only once. The chemical composition is distinguished by a high content of iron oxide, lime, magnesia and alkailis, thus decreasing the resistance of the crucible to corrosion. The mineralogical compositfon is mainly: alpha quartz, albite, oligoclase, andesine, diopside, augite and a small amount 01 anorthoclase and other trace minerals. The crucibe material has been found to have been originally made by mixing mud with sand to which an amount of chopped straw was added; after sun-drying the crucible was baked before use. The temperature employed in this process never exceeded 1100°C since, under prolonged heating, the crucible material fuses in the range 1150–1200°C.  相似文献
