THE PRESERVATION AND RESTORATION OF CANADIAN ETHNOGRAPHIC BASKETRY

Abstract

A method is given for the restoration and preservation of basketry. The treatment utilizes polyethylene glycol 600 with glycerine, dissolved in a 75% aqueous ethyl alcohol solution. No objectionable changes in the appearance have been observed.

NOTES ON THE CONSERVATION OF SCULPTURE,STONE, MARBLE AND TERRACOTTA

Abstract

Sulphuration is the main destroyer of marble, producing imaginary (not true) patina. Other reasons for the discoloration of marbles are discussed. Magnesium silicate saturated with de-ionized water is a safe and simple cleaner. Sintolite is advocated as an adhesive for marble rather than the general more fluid epoxy resins. Solid polyvinyl acetate is strongly advocated as the basis for sma1l repairs to internaIly housed marble. The consolidation of marble is discussed and a method for internal exhibits recommended. Conservation of unbaked clay is touched upon, and a method for the repair of terracotta suggested together with a process for the reproduction of a glazed frieze using a latex mould and epoxy-reinforced plaster casts. A few remarks are made concerning the dangers of cleaning alabaster with water. The commentary is of a general nature and is not intended as a strict blueprint for any particular object.

自"图书馆学"概念产生以来,图书馆学定义已进行了二百年的探索并取得了重要进展。图书馆学定义的发展规律逐渐由对图书馆基本活动的认识上升到对图书馆学实质的认识。作者认为,图书馆学应当与图书馆保持紧密的关系,但不局限于作为机构的图书馆的范畴,指出当前图书馆学研究应将重点放在研究新时代图书馆学内部的学科体系科学化建设上。

两封旧信与香港《国民日报》

日前翻检旧档,发现两封抗战时期国民党大佬写给陶百川的私信。这些信札保存在上海市档案馆馆藏——解放后军管会新闻处接收的旧大东书局档案中。说起大东书局,解放前在“上海滩”是以印制钞票、印花税票和邮票而著名的。它的董事长是赫赫有名的“海上闻人”杜月笙,总经理便是这位陶百川。

A PRELIMINARY NOTE ON THE USE OF ADHESIVES AND FILLERS IN THE RESTORATION OF ANCIENT MATERIALS WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO GLASS

Abstract

We have reacted Georgia marble in sulfur dioxide (SO₂) enriched atmospheres and calculated the reaction rate constant. This constant was derived from surface reduction data, obtained by leaching thereaction product from samples exposed for different periods of time. Application of this constant to marble weathered in known ambient levels of sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and relative humidity, allows the prediction of the thickness of the resulting gypsum crust formed over a given period of time. We have found that the crust grows outwards due to calciumions which migrate from the interior and then react with sulfur dioxide at the sample surface. Thus, anytreatment of the sulfated marble should include the considerations that the crust only masks the marble surface and is not an integral part of the original sculpture, and that cavities exist in the underlying layer of marble from which the calcium ions were selectively depleted.

THE RESTORATION AND CONSERVATION PROJECT OF BOROBUDUR TEMPLE,INDONESIA PLANNING - RESEARCH - DESIGN

Abstract

A survey is given of the environment of the monument, including its geographical and geological setting and meteorological data collected near the monument. The construction of Borobudur and the origin and consequences of damaging factors such as uneven settlements are discussed. Preliminary research required e.g. drilling programmes, soil mechanical studies, stone deterioration studies and investigations into the manufacture of concrete for foundations from local sources. The technical solutions proposed for the safeguarding programme are described in detail. Cost estimates, the organisation of the restoration project and landscaping and site development are mentioned. The duration of the project is estimated at six years. The complex and multi-disciplinary nature of the project requiring systematic planning both in the research and preparatory phases and in the implementation is stressed. Disciplines involved include amongst others: airphoto analysis, archaeology, architecture, chemistry, conservation techniques, geology, geophysics, hydrology, impermeabilization technology, landscape planning, microbiology, petrography, physics, soil mechanics, surveying and terrestrial photogrammetry.
