CONSOLIDATION OF FRAGILE OBJECTS

Abstract

The condition before treatment and the subsequent consolidation of the wooden parts of an eighteenth century English fire engine are described. Experiments on a range of possible consolidants are outlined, and the application of polyvinyl butyral (Butvar B90, Monsanto) by both brushing and vacuum methods is presented. A closing discussion examines the relationship of the experimental findings to the practical application, the need for consolidation, and the final results of the treatment.     

TESTING ADHESIVES FOR THE CONSOLIDATION OF PAINTINGS

Abstract

In the course of a program to develop adhesives for the consolidation of paintings it was found necessary to: (1) define the aims of the research, (2) design tests which would provide information on the mechanical performance (effectiveness) of the adhesives, (3) design tests which would help eliminate adhesives with qualities hazardous to paintings. This paper describes only the tests on the mechanical performance of various adhesives: (1) adhesion to paint films, (2) adhesion to conventional and newly developed lining supports, (3) cold flow of lining adhesives, and (4) rigidity of lining laminates. Formulations of the newly developed adhesives are given.     

SOME ASPECTS OF THE CONSERVATION OF WORKS OF ART IN BUILDINGS OF NEW CONCRETE

Abstract

This paper deals with the materials used in conservation treatments in the first half of the twentieth century for the preservation and consolidation of wooden art objects from the Saxony region in Germany. The use of such materials must be seen as early attempts to find a conservation treatment for wood. The documentation of conservation treatments provides a reference to the application of oils and oil–resin mixtures. The results from the chemical analysis of samples of historic preservatives from the beginning to the middle of the twentieth century (so-called 'Puckelin') carried out by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis confirm the use of tung oil as a drying oil, whereas the use of linseed oil cannot be excluded. Colophony and, probably, amber varnish were used as resinous constituents. There are indications that a conservation material dating from the second half of the twentieth century most likely contained rapeseed oil.

一、1912年1月19日述评 1912年1月19日（阴历十二月初一）,对于上海市民来说,是一个具有划时代意义的日子。它是上海人终于抖落一身精神枷锁,剥离满眼思想云翳,挺身,抬眼,上下审视左右环顾登高临御的结果。漫漫历史,须臾一瞬,闪转腾挪之间,上海已纵身一跃,跳出了它所固有的意识形态,站上了一个前所未有的历史高度。其意义,值得后人深长思之。     

我参加《文学的基本原理》修订琐忆

粉碎“四人帮”后,随着真理标准讨论的深入,“拨乱反正”成为各条战线的共同呼声,文化、教育领域尤其突出。当时,我有幸参与《文学的基本原理》的修订工作,和上海高校从事文艺理论研究和教学的同志多有接触,还到外地（主要是北京、南京）有关单位听取意见。大家一致认为,如果不拔乱反正,不肃清林彪、“四人帮”的流毒,任凭“三突出”、“高大全”之类谬论泛滥,文艺理论的教学和研究将很难继续下去,社会主义文学也就不可能出现真正的繁荣。
