TESTING ADHESIVES FOR THE CONSOLIDATION OF PAINTINGS

Abstract

In the course of a program to develop adhesives for the consolidation of paintings it was found necessary to: (1) define the aims of the research, (2) design tests which would provide information on the mechanical performance (effectiveness) of the adhesives, (3) design tests which would help eliminate adhesives with qualities hazardous to paintings. This paper describes only the tests on the mechanical performance of various adhesives: (1) adhesion to paint films, (2) adhesion to conventional and newly developed lining supports, (3) cold flow of lining adhesives, and (4) rigidity of lining laminates. Formulations of the newly developed adhesives are given.     

THE USE OF AN INFRA-RED IMAGE-CONVERTER FOR THE EXAMINATION OF PANEL PAINTINGS

Abstract

The use of an S-1 response infra-red image-converter for the examination of panel paintings is described. It is shown that satisfactory results maybe obtained with this equipment, which is easy to operate. The examination of underdrawings, retouchings and pentimenti is briefly discussed.

NOTE ON THE PREPARATION AND MOUNTING OF SAMPLES OF CHALK/GLUE GROUND FROM PAINTINGS FOR SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY

Abstract

A complete summary of equations for leakage of enclosures is given, including vapour diffusion through still air in openings, and infiltration of air/vapour/particulate mixture. Stack pressure due to temperature and relative humidity difference drives most infiltration. Experiments confirmed the diffusion and infiltration equations for small and medium-size enclosures. Leakage for a carefully made display case with ordinary materials has been reduced to the microbarometric limit of about 0·03 of an air change per day. Simplified tables and charts of leakage are given for 0·1, 1·0 and 10m enclosures, as a function of crack width, hole width, and wall permeability.

A DESIGN FOR LARGE PLASTER PIECE-MOULDS MADE IN THE FIELD

Abstract

An improved technique for the accurate reassembly of large plaster piece-moulds made in the field is described. The proposed method relies on the construction, within the main mould, of supporting detachable plaster arches which are accurately surveyed and planned in situ and subsequently easily reassembled prior to the making of the final cast.     

NOTE ON THE TECHNIQUE AND CONSERVATION OF SOME THANG-KA PAINTINGS

Abstract

The article is a concise report on the art historical as well as technical aspects of thang-ka paintings. It also describes briefly the traditional methods and materials employed in the execution of these paintings. The artists’ materials described in the literature are compared with actual findings as a result of analysis of pigments, binding media and other materials involved in the execution of the thang-ka paintings. An outline of the causes of deterioration of thang-kas is also mentioned. Finally, an extensive account is given of the method of treatment carried out in the author's laboratory.

DISCRIMINANT ANALYSIS AS A PREDICTION TOOL FOR UNCOMMITED VOTERS IN PRE-ELECTION POLLS

Uncommitted voters in pre-election polls include both thosewho have not yet made their choices (undecided voters) and thosewho have already made their choices but do not disclose them,for any reason (undeclared voters). The voting patterns of theseuncommitted voters are critical, especially in cases in whichthe size of the group is greater than the gap between the twoleading runners in an electoral race. In the present study,discriminant analysis was applied to predict the voting patternsof the uncommitted voters in two different election situations:the 1992 presidential election in the state of North Carolina,USA, and the 1992 presidential election in South Korea. Theadjusted percentage breakdown, which was created after discriminantanalysis assigned the uncommitted voters for each candidate,appeared noticeably closer to the actual results than the simplepercentage breakdown with the uncommitted voters excluded fromthe analysis. Discriminant analysis was also applied to predictthe effect of one candidate's possible withdrawal from electionswith several candidates. By treating the former supporters ofthe withdrawing candidate as another uncommitted group, discriminantanalysis provided a new percentage breakdown among the remainingcandidates; the result was consistent with experts' intuitiveprediction.

UTILIZING NATURAL STRUCTURE OF THE RESEARCH LITERATURE IN PSYCHOLOGY AS A MODEL FOR BIBLIOGRAPHIC INSTRUCTION

This paper describes an approach to library instruction in psychology, involving analysis of the natural structure of the research literature. An example using Festinger's theory of cognitive dissonance is presented. This approach is suggested for use as a complement or alternative to the search strategy method of instruction.
