Attitudes Toward Death Education and Grief Counseling

This article surveyed counselors and counselor educators across the nation regarding their attitudes toward death education and grief counseling. Results were compared to previous research in this area, and it was found that death education and grief training has increased significantly in recent years. Results also indicated that elementary school counselors were more willing than junior or senior high counselors to prepare teachers to help in the area of grief. The primary reasons given by counselors for not attending courses, workshops, or seminars on death education were that training was either not available or not convenient. Counselor educators' reasons for non-attendance varied from time conflict to lack of interest.     

Counseling and Counselor Education: A Developmental Approach

The article reviews the need for a developmental conception as the aim of educational intervention. The rationale is presented and compared to the mental health treatment approach. A case is made for the importance of a primary prevention, an ego and moral development focus for the psychological education of pupils and young adults.     

Principals' Training in Counseling and Development: A National Survey

A national survey for all schools offering graduate training for school principals and for school counselors was conducted to determine the amount of preservice training principals receive related to school counseling and development. A questionnaire was mailed to the head of the administrator-training program at each of the 407 universities identified, and 376 responses were returned. Findings with respect to counseling and development courses required in administator-training programs, counseling and development courses available as electives, and counseling and development-oriented components in required administration courses are presented. Also, suggestions for counselor educators regarding methods of improving the counseling and development-related training received by educational administrators are offered.     

Pressing Issues in College Counseling: A Survey of American College Counseling Association Members

The authors conducted a survey of members of the American College Counseling Association to ascertain the experiences and opinions of college counselors on several pressing issues within the college counseling profession. Survey results from 133 respondents indicated that counseling centers may benefit from increasing the number of group counseling interventions by increasing the multicultural competence of services provided, by implementing crisis/disaster mental health initiatives, and by more effectively consulting with other professionals on campus.

生是什么?死是什么?这些不经意的问题,如今不能再不“经意”了。校园频现的花季少年自杀现象已经引起我们多少次心灵的震撼。我们不禁扪心自问:他们从教育中理解了生、理解了死吗?长期以来,学校教育功利思想浓重,它在客观上更多是在培养物质财富的创造者,导致青少年学生在有关生命意义的问题上总是处在蒙昧状态。中国教育报2002年2月1日在题为“生命中不能承受之重—一关于青少年轻生现象的调查与思考”中,呼吁“我国青少年亟待普及死亡教育”,“但愿在不久的将来,死亡教育真的能走进课堂”。为此我对在我国青少年中开展生死教育的必要性、意义、内容和可能途径做进一步深入的分析。     

Leadership in Guidance: A Survey of School Counseling Supervisors

The authors present the results of a survey of district-level school counseling supervisors in Virginia. The results indicate that few school divisions employ individuals with the title of guidance supervisor. In divisions where such positions exist, they are staffed most often by individuals with guidance training and experience. The supervisors surveyed indicated that they spend a substantial portion of their time providing direct consultative support and assistance to counselors, engage in few research activities, and have few consultative contacts with counselor educators. Recommendations regarding school counselor supervision are offered based on survey data.     

Multicultural Education for Counseling: A Reply to Lloyd

In this article the authors respond to three important issues raised by Arthur Lloyd in his lead article on multicultural counseling in the March 1987 issue of Counselor Education and Supervision. We examine these issues from various perspectives. Suggestions are offered for resolving these issues.     

Counseling Athletes: A New Specialty in Counselor Education

A master's-level specialization in athletic counseling is described. Development of the program, course work, student recruitment, and program evaluation are discussed.     

Counseling Programs' Informed Consent Practices: A Survey of Student Preferences

This study examined 115 master's‐level counseling students' preferences for content, timing, and method of programmatic informed consent. Students rated the majority of items as moderately or extremely important to receive, and they indicated a desire for the informed consent to be facilitated through a combination of both oral and written methods throughout their programs of study. Results reinforce and go beyond the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (2009) and American Counseling Association (2005) expectations for informed consent. Implications for counselor education are discussed.     

A Survey of Psychiatric Rehabilitation Counseling Training Needs

A total of 580 vocational rehabilitation counseling professionals from Rehabilitation Services Administration Region III responded to a 40-item, forced-choice questionnaire regarding perceived needs for training in the area of psychiatric rehabilitation. Although it was identified as least available, opportunity for continuing education was rated as the optimal vehicle for training rather than formal academic course work or agency in-service programs. Translating psychiatric diagnoses into functional behavioral terminology was ranked foremost as a specific training need; training in career counseling and realistic goal planning and job-seeking skills and job placement needs of the psychiatrically disabled client ranked second and third.     

Counseling Faculty Members' Involvement in Schools and School Reform: A National Survey

Counselor education faculty from programs in school counseling accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP) in school were surveyed and found to have substantial involvement in activities relevant to K-12 education.     

Academic Hiring Policies and Projections: A Survey of CACREP- and APA-Accredited Counseling Programs

This study investigated 84 counselor education and counseling psychology programs to determine the academic hiring policies and projections for employment in the next 10 years.

Research: Managing College Student Mental Health Crises After-Hours: A Survey of Counseling Centers

Counseling center directors at 22 colleges and universities in Pennsylvania were surveyed regarding staff involvement in students' mental health crises after hours. Center practices regarding on-call procedures, counselor availability, hospitalization of students, and management of impaired students on campus are described and potential problems are discussed.     

A Joint Venture in Counselor Education: The Clovis Family Counseling Center

California State University, Fresno, and a local school district formed a cooperative counseling center that has provided each with substantial benefits.
