Development is an important goal for developing countries. This goal cannot be achieved without the growth of human potential. Counseling is one of the effective means for developing human potential. Yet counseling has been evolving slowly in developing countries. Reports show that counseling and guidance have been started in the schools in some of these countries; they rarely show that counseling has been implemented in other settings. Nearly a quarter of the entire population of the EU has a disability. Disabled employees have become increasingly integrated into the labor force. According to a national survey and an international literature review, disabled people's experiences enrich the cultural diversity of the workplace. The purpose of the present paper is to present current research trends and identify future research needs in terms of occupational counseling for disabled employees. Research in this area poses many challenges, and there is a clear need for an interdisciplinary approach. Counseling-oriented, work-oriented and manager-based models are discussed in this paper. Counseling can promote collaboration with various agencies, such as family organizations, educators and managers, thus laying the foundations for developing the competencies needed in the labor markets of the future. The paper goes on to discuss the role of empowerment, self-advocacy and social relations over the life span. 相似文献

Despite the importance of learning abilities and disabilities in education and child development, little is known about their genetic and environmental origins in the early school years. We report results for English (which includes reading, writing, and speaking), mathematics, and science as well as general cognitive ability in a large and representative sample of U.K. twins studied at 7, 9, and 10 years of age. Although preliminary reports of some of these data have been published, the purpose of this monograph is to present new univariate, multivariate, and longitudinal analyses that systematically examine genetic and environmental influences for the entire sample at all ages for all measures for both the low extremes (disabilities) and the entire sample (abilities). English, mathematics, and science yielded similarly high heritabilities and modest shared environmental influences at 7, 9, and 10 years despite major changes in content across these years. We draw three conclusions that go beyond estimating heritability. First, the abnormal is normal: Low performance is the quantitative extreme of the same genetic and environmental influences that operate throughout the normal distribution. Second, continuity is genetic and change is environmental: Longitudinal analyses suggest that age-to-age stability is primarily mediated genetically, whereas the environment contributes to change from age to age. Third, genes are generalists and environments are specialists: Multivariate analyses indicate that genes largely contribute to similarity in performance within and between the three domains--and with general cognitive ability--whereas the environment contributes to differences in performance. These conclusions have far-reaching implications for education and child development as well as for molecular genetics and neuroscience. 相似文献

The results of four follow-up studies of learning-disabled children are reviewed. A comparison of results among the studies and of analyses of individual variation within the studies suggest some factors associated with long-term outcomes. The normal development of humor in children has been well documented with a predictable course that is tied to social, cognitive,
and linguistic development in children. This study explored humor comprehension in children with nonverbal learning disabilities
(NVLD). Children with NVLD were compared with children with reading disabilities and a comparison group of children with no
learning disabilities to assess their comprehension of humor. The humor test was composed of a joke and cartoon section. No
group differences in humor comprehension were found when the NVLD group was defined as having visual–spatial and visual reasoning
deficits. However, when the NVLD group was divided into children with and without social perceptual difficulties as defined
by a direct measure of social comprehension, significant group differences were found in the levels of humor comprehension.
These results support the association of humor comprehension with social perception and lend tentative support to the hypothesis
that children with NVLD may not be a homogenous group. Future study directions include further exploration into the nature
of the association between humor comprehension and social perception as well as closer examination of the heterogeneity of

Several studies have shown that children with learning disabilities (LD) have difficulty in inhibiting irrelevant information, which generates endogenous interference from working memory. Other inhibition capacities have not yet been investigated, however. This article reports on an experiment examining the capacities of children with LD to inhibit exogenous interference, such as automatic, prepotent responses and distractor interference. Fifteen 11-year-old children with LD and 15 matched controls completed four tasks of inhibition, using the Stroop and Eriksen's flanker paradigms. To test the hypothesis that inhibition can be differentiated in terms of the type of material it acts on, each paradigm was used with numerical and nonnumerical stimuli. Our results showed that children with LD did not exhibit significantly larger interference effects than controls. Moreover, the pattern of results did not differ according to the type of material used. These findings indicate that children with LD do not show impairment in the inhibition of exogenous information--a finding that contradicts the material-specific inhibition hypothesis. 相似文献

Arab countries are comprised mainly of young people. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the counseling needs of youth in the Arab countries. To understand the needs of young people, institutions which play an important role in the socialization of youth were analyzed. Specifically, the role of family, school and peer group was discussed. The youth needs for independence, affiliation and social relationships, education and career were examined within the context of the Arab culture. In December 2002, the Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities' Committee of Inquiry into the mental health needs of young people with learning disabilities produced its report.
Barry Carpenter, Chief Executive at Sunfield and Chair of the committee, and Hazel Morgan, head of the Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities, take this opportunity to share some insights into the workings of the committee and summarise the key findings. The committee drew evidence from a range of sources, but placed the voices and experiences of young people with learning disabilities at the centre of their proceedings. The committee's findings and recommendations were wide ranging and will have far-reaching implications, but there are immediate messages that schools and colleges should hear. It is upon these messages, taking account of pastoral provision, the curriculum, transition and inter-agency work, that Barry Carpenter and Hazel Morgan focus in this article. 相似文献

To investigate the relationship between achievement and IQ in the learning-disabled (LD) population, changes in the IQ scores of LD students from the early elementary grades to the high school grades were studied. The intercorrelations among those IQ scores and a variety of achievement scores were then explored for the purpose of ascertaining causal relationships. The results were interpreted as support for the contention that the underachievement of LD students (in particular, reading underachievement) plays a predominant causal role in the achievement-IQ relationship in this population. 相似文献

The prevalent view is that children with physical disabilities are likely to have greater emotional and psychological problems, including lower self-esteem, than that of their able-bodied peers ( Arnold & Chapman, 1992 ). The basis for this is explored and the psychological research analysed to see whether it supports such a view. The analysis highlights the assumptions that have been made when researching this area, and the methodological difficulties in the research. The findings are that present research does not support the view that children with physical disabilities have a lower self-esteem than their able-bodied peers. It is suggested that a recognition of the psychological resilience of these children may be a helpful starting point when considering future research in this area. 相似文献
