Static analysis of programming exercises: Fairness,usefulness and a method for application

This article explores the suitability of static analysis techniques based on the abstract syntax tree (AST) for the automated assessment of early/mid degree level programming. Focus is on fairness, timeliness and consistency of grades and feedback. Following investigation into manual marking practises, including a survey of markers, the assessment of 97 student Java programming submissions is automated using static analysis rules. Initially, no correlation between human provided marks and rule violations is found. This paper investigates why, and considers several improvements to the approaches used for applying static analysis rules. New methods for application are explored and the resulting technique is applied to a second exercise with 95 submissions. The results show a stronger positive correlation with manual assessment, whilst retaining advantages in terms of time cost, pedagogic advantages and instant feedback. This study provides insight into the differences between human assessment and static analysis approaches and highlights several potential pitfalls of simplistic implementations. Finally, this paper concludes that static analysis approaches are appropriate for automated assessment; however, these approaches should be used with care.

以C语言上机考试系统的自动评分模块为例,介绍和分析了各种题型的评分策略及此关键技术的解决方案,并给出了部分源代码．针对传统的编程题自动评分方法以结果论成败,不符合教师人工阅卷习惯的问题,提出了一种基于程序理解的动态测试与静态分析组合方法的编程题评分策略,该方法适用于考察考生对程序算法和关键语义的正确理解,使得评分结果更加符合人工阅卷的思维过程．     

汉语语义句法"前管后"的生成机制——以《山海经》中描写句为例

“前管后”是近年来立足汉语自身研究所提出的一种语义句法生成理论;徐通锵先生的“前管后”理论是一种动态的句法生成模式;从《山海经》描写旬的分析可以看出,还有一种静态的句法生成机制,它只发生在一个单独的句子当中,谓语前面的语义中心管辖、规定谓语后面的语义;从“前管后”生成机制的发展来看可以将描写句分为三种形式。     

The impact of bilingual dictionaries on lexical sophistication and lexical accuracy in tests of L2 writing proficiency: A quantitative analysis

Writing assessment essentially juxtaposes two elements: how ‘good writing’ is to be defined, and how ‘good measurement’ of that writing is to be carried out. The timed test is often used in large-scale L2 writing assessments because it is considered to provide reliable measurement. It is, however, highly inauthentic. One way of enhancing authenticity in a way that might also promote good writing is to include access to support resources in the test. This article reports a study into whether allowing a bilingual dictionary enhances good writing in German writing tests. Participants (n = 47) took two tests, one with and one without a bilingual dictionary. The essays of sub-sets of the participants were compared in terms of lexical sophistication, lexical accuracy and test score. Lexical sophistication was measured by means of the Lexical Frequency Profile (Laufer & Nation, 1995). Lexical accuracy was determined through a quantitative analysis of words looked up in the dictionary. The results revealed an increase in lexical sophistication in ‘with dictionary’ tests but frequent misuse of look-ups. There was also no improvement in test scores. Subsequent issues for the use of dictionaries in writing tests are raised.
