A Competency-Based Approach to Adult Counseling and Guidance

This article describes the Adult Career Education Counseling Project, a special demonstration project funded by the United States Office of Education, Division of Occupational and Adult Education. The major goal of the project is to develop a competency-based individualized instructional training system for guidance personnel wanting to work in adult education settings. The article explains the rationale, development, and process used in identification of conceptual areas that were developed into modules currently being pilot tested prior to final revision. Once the total training system has been developed, adult education and counseling and guidance programs may use these materials to design a counseling and guidance program unique to local program or institutional goals and objectives.     

Evaluation of Staff Development Methods for Measuring Client Products

This article reports the results of a study seeking to: (a) develop, validate, and implement in-service methods designed to teach program development and evaluation based on measured client products to guidance personnel; (b) determine which in-service methods were most effective; and (c) evaluate the attitudes of guidance personnel toward accountability and program evaluation based on measured client products.

Counseling and guidance in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is striving to develop a counseling and guidance program to serve its nation. This study focuses on the educational goals of Saudi Arabia in general and the goals and objectives of the counseling and guidance program specifically. The study examines the development of the counseling and guidance program, the philosophical assumptions of the program, the administration of the program, and the training of the school counselor.

Bhutan: impressive strides in health and education

This article reports the important developments in adolescent health and education status in Bhutan. These developments consist of a change in the focus of Bhutan's UNFPA-supportive reproductive health services. The country has also included adolescents as a primary target of reproductive health services. Adolescent girls have become the beneficiaries of a school health program developed by the Division of Education, and a comprehensive youth guidance program is under development by the Youth Guidance and Counseling Section of the Education Division. This change is a response to the increasing youth population; over 58% of the total population is aged under 25 years, and over 15% is aged under 15 years. Although initiatives to improve youth status has been undertaken, some problems still remain. These include malnourishment, pregnancy complications, and rise of sexually transmitted diseases, which raises the potential for the spread of HIV/AIDS.     

A group treatment program for adolescent sex offenders: five steps toward resolution

This article describes a five-step group therapy program for adolescent sex offenders. The key elements of this approach are peer interaction and a system of incentives to move on in therapy, both of which are believed to be crucial in treating adolescents most effectively. While progressing through the steps, the participants acknowledge their adjudication, detail their offenses and personal sexual development, enhance their insights into their behavior and sexuality at large and plan how to avoid offending again. This paper describes the program of a rural outpatient guidance clinic in which a male-female therapist team met with several groups of boys (21 boys). The group program is part of a total treatment approach which also includes assessment, individual and family therapy.     

A Report from the Higher Education Review Board (HERB): Assessment of Undergraduate Student Learning Outcomes in Food Science

For the past 15 years, Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) has mandated assessment of undergraduate student learning outcomes as the basis for approving food science (FS) programs. No longer is a check‐off course system sufficient to be an IFT‐approved program. The 4 steps to gaining IFT approval include developing learning outcomes for all required FS courses, developing outcomes for the program as a whole, assessing student learning through a comprehensive series of assessment tools, and developing and reporting a plan to use the assessment data collected for continuous program improvement. This article reviews these steps in some detail, providing guidance on possible approaches that may be used. In the end, the aim of the IFT requirements is to improve student learning in FS to advance the field.

拉卡托斯认为,一个科学研究纲领主要由硬核、保护带和指导研究纲领未来发展的启发规则等部分组成。依此看,中国特色社会主义研究纲领亦主要是由这几部分构成。中国特色社会主义理论的硬核规制着这一理论既是科学社会主义的,又具有中国特色,其保护带包括社会主义本质论等十个方面。中国特色社会主义研究纲领的正面启发规则包括解放思想、实事求是规则、理论创新规则和人民利益至上规则等。在中国特色社会主义发展实践中,要坚守"内核",适时调整其"保护带"。     

A five level intervention model: division of professional labor and implication for school counseling

Mental-health services can contribute substantially to many areas of school life, but the nature and effectiveness of these contributions depend to a large degree on the willingness of the personnel involved to work as a team and to develop new perspectives and practices. This article presents a five level model of mental-health intervention in the school setting and posits a division of responsibility for that intervention among the school psychologist, the school guidance counselor and the teacher. Implications for a school-counselor preparation program are discussed.     

构建“四层、四阶”大学生就业指导模式探讨

在分析大学生就业指导的现状及问题的基础上提出构建“四层、四阶”全方位大学生就业指导模式。旨在构建以学生为中心,将就业指导服务分为四个不同层次;将大学四年分为不同时期的四阶指导,并对指导程序设定、人员的培训、指导内容和方式做了详细的说明。     

中外合作办学中的英语课程设置——以中新合作办学为例

本文以徐州工程学院中新(新西兰)合作办学班(08级营销3)的学生为主要研究对象,通过内省、访谈、观察和问卷等手段等多种手段了解学生的学习需求,分析他们大学四年的学习经历,结合需求理论,总结出了一套适合我院合作办学专业的英语课程设置。

强化理论对于学校教育发展的影响至今没有消失过,本文一方面从斯金纳的强化理论的概念及功能入手,深入浅出地分析正强化与负强化在学校教育中的用途,以及怎样使教师在日常的学校教育中灵活运用它们。另一方面,斯金纳的程序教学法也为我们日常教学提供了丰富的理论指导,文中详细列举了程序教学法的几个方面和我们应采取的措施。     

科学知识社会学的代际演进探析

产生于20世纪70年代的科学知识社会学顺应时代发展潮流,随科学对社会作用的变化而不断调整其指导纲领:从强纲领、社会建构论到社会学有限主义,SSK经历了不断向实践纬度演进的三代发展历程,显示了强大的生命力,并逐步摆脱其理论困境,开拓了新的发展空间。本文就SSK产生的历史条件、代际演进及其反思进行探析,以期为今后进一步研究带来新的路向。     

Anxiety and Empathy in a Counseling and Guidance Institute

This article investigates the relationship between anxiety and the development of empathy in counselor trainees during a full-year counseling and guidance institute. Anxiety was assessed three times during the program and empathy twice. It was found that anxiety decreased significantly during the course of the institute. No significant relationship was found between anxiety and empathy changes. It appears that such changes in trainees may be related to length of training. It is suggested that research concerning effects of training be longitudinal and focus on trainee change throughout the training period.

Program-Wide Positive Behavior Support in Preschool: Lessons for Getting Started

There is growing concern over the number of young children who display challenging behavior and preschool teachers are reporting children’s challenging behavior as their greatest concern. Program-wide Positive Behavior Support (PWPBS) is a promising model for supporting appropriate behavior and decreasing challenging behavior in early childhood programs. Implementation in early childhood settings is relatively new and guidance on how to implement PWPBS in early childhood settings is growing. This article documents the implementation process for an early childhood program serving children from 6 weeks to 5 years of age, shares lessons learned and offers practical advice for getting started with PWPBS.     

Training of the Career Development Specialist Within Counselor Education

What is the responsibility of counselor education programs in more efficiently preparing students in the area of career guidance and development? This article attempts to explain one department's efforts in this important area. It explains the rationale, development, and implementation of a subspeciality, Career Development Specialist (CDS), in a counselor education program. Covered are areas such as historical/conceptual review of the CDS, competencies and courses, recruitment of students, and where graduates have located jobs. Finally, the implications for counselor education are discussed.     

Learning in an Honors Program

Abstract. This article describes a program of demanding courses offered in an academic community to nontraditional and at-risk, first- and second-year students at a research university. The delivery of instruction uses multiple pedagogies, including collaborative learning and labs where students work together under the guidance of undergraduate assistants. A research study showed that students in the program perform better than traditional students in equivalent courses. In addition, this study provides strong evidence that when students of the program take the same subsequent classes offered to the general university population, their success rates match or exceed those of their traditional classmates.
