Kensuke’s Kingdom is a highly readable British survival novel written by Michael Morourgo. It is not only a survival novel, but also a realistic novel for the children. By the two disparate characters, the writer wants to discuss the effects of the war, which is the deeper meaning of this novel. Writing war and the effects of the war is a heavy but necessary topic for children’s literature. Books like Kensuke’s Kingdom can be woven into young readers’ developing senses of themselves, extending their imaginations and helping them to understand the world from unaccustomed points of view.  相似文献

The little foxes, Lillian Hellman’s most popular piece of drama, is a cynical play which concerns with family greed and revenge. Analyzed from various critical perspectives, The Little Foxes is most prominently studied on her political viewpoint. Here this paper is intended to study it from the aspect of women’s position in the drama, or more concretely, in that society by the analyzing of the two main women characters: Birdie and Regina, to reveal that whichever kind of life a woman living in the early twentieth chose to live, she would never be "successful".  相似文献

The publication of the famous novel The Sound and The Fury projects the long-enduring reputation of William Faulkner as a household American writer in every nook and cranny of the world.Just in this novel,Faulkner employs the literary device of stream of consciousness and makes a good play with time and order to his own joy, which makes it an outstanding literary feature in the novel. In this essay, the unusual conceptions of time and order in the novel are tentatively probed mainly from the following three perspectives:1) the initiative for Faulkner creating the novel as a novel against time and order.2) the disordered arrangement as an artistic device——the optimum key to delivering the story.3) the potential order underlying the seeming disorder in the novel.  相似文献

The Story of The Stone is the peak of the art of the novel in ancient China. Its artistic achievement is displayed first of all in its dazzling array of characters. Jia Baoyu, Lin Daiyu, Wang Xifeng, Xue Baochai, Yuanyang, Qingwen, and the others all have their distinct personalities and are true to life as if they were living amongst us. These richly complex characters with their different stations in life and divergent views and philosophies act out an intricate pattern of human relationships and conflicts within the Jia family mansion. Apart from their distinct ways of acting and speaking, the peculiarities of their appearances, dress and living arrangements, the names the author gave them also contribute a lot to the successful display of all these characters.  相似文献

The Ransom of Red Chief is a short story written by O·Henry. Some critics regard it as a plot story but some do not. A typical plot story should focus on the plot :using techniques such as flashback or foreshadowing to unfold the plot and containing exposition, complication, climax, resolution, conclusion to rich the plot. The main characters are presented with internal and external conflicts as well. In this thesis, a detailed analysis will be presented to prove that this story is really a plot story.  相似文献

Hemingway established a well-known literary theory - iceberg principle. He said he always attempted to create his literary works according to this principle. In his opinion,if a prose writer has a pretty clear idea of what he writes about, then he can omit the things he knows, and the readers will strongly feel that what the writer has omitted seems to have been written as long as what he writes is authentic.Hemingway himself once said,"The dignity of movement of an iceberg is due to only one eighth of it being above water."Here, one eighth refers to the information given by the author, and the rest refers to the unwrit ten information that can be acquired in readers’imagination on the basis of the one eighth. The Killers is a good example of Hemingway’s iceberg principle. This essay will analyse the characters in it to show how the principle was used in this short story. With no doubt the iceberg principle leaves a large space for the readers to imagine and better understand Hemingway’s works.  相似文献

Hills Like White Elephants is a short story written by Hemingway in 1927. The story of Hills Like White Elephants takesplace in an unknown small railway station in northern Spain. A young couple are waiting for the express to Barcelona. The storystarts the dialogue of the novel, which is simple and easy to understand, but vividly describes the rich inner world of the protagonists. The novel with only a few thousand words vividly shows Hemingway's unique narrative style. Hemingway uses irony, symbolism, semantics level and syntax level to depict the psychological state of characters. The Foregrounding theory of stylistics is usedto analyze the theme text and the style of Hemingway from two aspects—Deviation and Over-Regularity.  相似文献

Sex and gender have been confusingly categorised by many scholars.Sex refers to biological characteristics;gender, can also be influenced by biology but does not determined by it.Unlike sex, which is determined by nature at birth, gender is a social construct specifying the culturally prescribed roles that men and women are to follow and represent. In order to argue that gender attaches to culture and that gender identity is shaped socially and culturally, this essay analyses Jane Campion’s The Piano from three perspectives.Firstly, the essay will examine the way people in the film represent their gender characters through three repeatedly demonstrated narrative motifs, clothing, the axe and the piano,to illustrate that gender is performative and that cultural gender identities advocate specific performances in terms of behaviour,speech,views,etc.(Butler,2011).Then,through an analysis of the different gazes of the characters in the film, the essay indicates that social and cultural interaction between the genders can go beyond and blur the boundaries of the stereotypical categories of male and female. In the third section, the essay will argue that social rules and discourse also play a prominent role in shaping people’s gender,by discussing how the characters represent and re-define their gender identity under the pressure of the patriarchal society they inhabit.  相似文献

Edmund Husserl’s first important move about phenomenology is the“phenomenological reduction”which means that we should reduce the external world to the contents of our consciousness alone. However, Hans-Georg Gadamer holds the opinion that all interpretation of a past work consists in a dialogue between past and present(Eagleton, T. 2009:62). Gadamer’s famous theory is fusion of horizons which means that the event of understanding comes about when our own“horizon”of historical meanings and assumptions“fuses”with the“horizon”within which the work itself is placed. The present thesis takes Hawthorne’s YoungGoodmanBrown as an example to illustrate different understandings when readers apply the two different theories.  相似文献

Araby by James Joyce is much more than a story of first love;it is a portrait of a world that defies the ideal and the dream. The writer concentrates on character rather than on plot to reveal the ironies by using the Setting and atmosphere, and furthermore reinforces the theme and characters in Araby.  相似文献
