Analysis on Features of African American Vernacular English

African American Vernacular English (AAVE), though often stamped with a degraded mark, carries a tremendous power in shaping American culture. AAVE, the headspring of black culture, has been given much research attention by linguists and sociologists. This paper analyzes the important features of AAVE on both levels of social situations and linguistics. It advocates that as a well-established English variety, AAVE with its unique linguistic framework and abundant cultural elements holds a significant place in the study of the evolution of America’s multi-cultural society.

Phonological awareness skills in young African American English speakers

The purpose of this study was to examine African American children’s performance on a phonological awareness task that included items reflecting differences between African American English (AAE) and mainstream American English. The relationship between spoken production of AAE forms and performance on phonological awareness, vocabulary, and letter-word recognition tasks was also investigated. Analyses indicated that children who produced fewer AAE features in speech performed significantly different from those who produced AAE features more frequently on the experimental phonological awareness task. Furthermore, analyses showed that the relationship between spoken AAE production and phonological awareness was partially mediated, while the relationship with letter-word recognition was fully mediated. Overall, the results suggest a direct relation between spoken AAE use and phonological awareness and an indirect relation with letter-word reading.

Abstract

Despite the substantive body of research on African American Language (AAL), designating it a meaningful, rule-governed language system and the first language of many African Americans, schools in the US have systematically failed to integrate a language policy related to African American English learners (AAELs). In this article, we employ a critical discourse and policy analysis to examine two major policies related to AAL and AAELs – the Martin Luther King Junior Elementary School Children et al. v. Ann Arbor School District, a federal district case in Michigan known as the Ann Arbor Decision, and the Ebonics Resolution adopted by the Oakland California Board of the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD). Our analysis reveals three themes across these texts – they affirm AAL as a ‘home and community language’ in its own right, mandate teachers to take ‘appropriate action’ in teaching AAL speakers, and dispel notions that AAL stems from cultural, social, and economic deprivation.     

Interaction of African American Learners Online: An Adult Education Perspective

This study examines how various life factors and personal attributes affect African American adult learners’ use of the three types of learning interaction—learner–content, learner–instructor, and learner–learner. Multivariate multiple regression analyses were used. The aggregate effect of life factors on African American adult learners’ use of the three types of learning interaction is strong whereas the aggregate effect of personal attributes shows minimal predictive power. This study confirms the importance of using adult learning theories and principles to understand the nature of adult learning online.

Familiarity with School English in African American children and its relation to early reading achievement

For children whose everyday speech differs greatly from the School English (SE) they encounter in academic materials and settings, it was hypothesized that greater familiarity with SE would be associated with more successful early reading acquisition. Sentence imitation and reading skills of 217 urban African American students in kindergarten through second grade (ages 5 to 8 years) were assessed. Children in each grade varied widely in the extent to which their imitations of SE sentences included phonological and grammatical forms that are acceptable in African American Vernacular English but not in SE. Higher familiarity with SE (reproducing SE features more often when imitating) was associated with better reading achievement, and these relationships were independent of memory ability.
