Can't Ignore—Distraction by Task-Irrelevant Sounds in Early and Middle Childhood

Attention control abilities are relevant for learning success. Little is known about the development of audio-visual attention in early childhood. Four groups of children between the ages of 4 and 10 years and adults performed an audio-visual distraction paradigm (N = 106). Multilevel analyses revealed increased reaction times in a visual categorization task when task-irrelevant novel sounds were presented, demonstrating involuntary distraction of attention. This distraction effect decreased with age and significantly differed between age groups. In addition, the two youngest age groups responded with a delay in trials following a distractor trial, indicating delayed reallocation of attention to the task at hand. Results indicate a significant maturation of audio-visual attention control within a few years during early childhood that continues throughout middle childhood.

Analyzing the Interdependence Between Some Certain Gene Loci by Epistasis Measures in Fitness Landscapes of Schemata

GA-hardness and interdependence between genes in the chromosome are important questions in the study of genetic algorithms (GA) ,Traditional methods,which are used to measure the interaction between genes,can only reflect the extent of epistasis between all genes in the chromosome, Therefore,the definition of the fitness landscape of schemata is proosed in this paper,and epistasis measures on this landscape of schemata are used to analyze the degree of interdependence between some certain gene loci in study ,Some information between these sites can be reflected by some characters of the fitness landscape of schemata which are composed of these fixed sites,The stronger the interaction between these sites,the larger the variation of the fitness of schemata whose fixed sites correspond to those sites in study ,and the more rugged the fitness landscape of these schemata,According to the degree of interaction between given gene loci ,building blocks of GA can be analyzed and determined,and further genetic operators and the structure of GA can be designed and adjusted to improve the perfomance of GA ,At last,a lot of experiments including NK-models are done,and results of empirical analysis show that this method is effective.

Theory–practice dichotomy in inquiry: Meanings and preservice teacher–mentor teacher tension in Turkish literacy classrooms

This study aims at exploring the meanings constructed by preservice teachers of literacy about theory–practice dichotomy and investigating the preservice teacher–mentor teacher tension during the internship period. Qualitative data were collected by preservice teachers as researchers in inquiry through field notes, reflective journals, observation reports and open-ended survey questions. Findings are discussed with respect to theory–practice dichotomy and constructed meanings are obtained. High self-efficacy beliefs of preservice teachers of literacy, mentor teacher indifference and supervisor–mentor teacher dichotomy seem to have a lot to do with the preservice teacher–mentor teacher tension.
