The JISC digital preservation focus and the digital preservation coalition

Collaboration is widely seen as being essential for digital preservation but recognised by practitioners as being often as challenging as addressing digital preservation itself. This paper outlines the programme and activities of the JISC Digital Preservation Focus and the proposed Digital Preservation Coalition and the rationale which has led to these developments to foster collaboration. It will be relevant both to those directly affected by these developments in the UK and to an international audience interested in the general approaches adopted and specific programmes that are being developed.

Evaluating a digital community archive from the user perspective: The case of formative multifaceted evaluation

Multifaceted evaluation studies of digital archives are important to understanding multiple aspects of user experience and improving the quality of the systems. This study provides an example of a formative evaluation of the community digital heritage archive. Using a multifaceted evaluation framework, the study focused on three aspects of the site relevant to users: interface, collections, and information organization. The study adopted a mixed-methods design with a questionnaire and interviews with community members. The findings indicate that in addition to a usable interface, the quality of objects, depth of metadata, contextual information, and coverage are important to users. The lack of representation of marginalized groups that were part of the community's history emerged as an important theme. The findings from the study were used to redesign the site and to expand the archive's coverage. This research also points to the need for evaluation models that focus on community-based criteria.     

The preservation of digital information

The emergence of digital libraries and publication is still in its infancy, but is racing towards a maturity which just five years ago would have seemed impossible. The principal problems which must be solved to make digital information a routine part of the information landscape fall into two domains— technological problems and social problems. It is probably not too much to suggest that a solution to most current technological obstacles to this networked world of information can be found in the next five years. Many of these problems have been addressed over the last two years in this column. At the same time the social problems, which are principally institutional and economic—such as, property rights and infrastructure (e.g., responsibility for access over time)—are not so close to resolution and may be harder to solve than those which are technologically based. Similarly, we are just beginning to consider the issues of preservation of digital information. Here the problems reflect not only technical issues but also the social ones which makes them doubly difficult to solve. For libraries and archives to manage digital information successfully over the long-term, these problems must be emphatically solved. If they are not resolved at the outset the legacy of digital information will be enormously more complex than print and the problems of preserving print materials—acid papers and embrittlement—will seem trivial by comparison. Diverse socio-technical aspects of a digital archive of Aboriginal languages

ABSTRACT

A socio-technical approach is taken to explore a digital archive of Australian Indigenous cultural heritage. The Living Archive of Aboriginal Languages is considered in terms of what it is currently doing and what it was intended to do. Two ethnographic stories focusing on user interactions and the outcomes of an online survey serve to evaluate the effectiveness of the Archive from the perspective of different users. This is then juxtaposed with a consideration of the original grant application, outlining what was envisaged for the project. This analysis serves to highlight some of the contingent relations and diverse socio-technical aspects of a specific knowledge infrastructure, as it allows multiple forms of interaction, new connections and generative activities as people discover, access and interact with the content now and into the future.     

Author! author!: creating a digital archive of publications in a hospital library setting

Baptist Hospital of Miami has been honoring its staff authors annually during National Library Week since 1979, at the time the library was relocated. Upon "doing the math" and realizing that twenty-five years had passed, a special event was planned to celebrate the occasion in 2004. A merger of four hospitals in 1995 to form Baptist Health South Florida, and an addition of a fifth hospital in 2003 added into the complexity of these publications. Organizing the event led to the conclusion that there had to be a "better way" to manage the publication archive. This paper will include a look back at the event's past, present efforts to develop an archival database, and future plans to make articles available electronically to users, copyright permitting.     

SHAPING COURSE. The Development of the Strategy for the e-Depot of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek,National Library of the Netherlands, in a National and International Context

Operating an international archive for digital information resources by a relatively small organization as the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB) asks for a firm foundation of its policy. Continuing research and development efforts to secure permanent preservation and access to electronic information on a national and international scale require substantial financial, technical and staffing commitments. Cooperation in sharing resources and knowledge is called for. In the national context of the Netherlands the KB recently took the initiative to build the National Digital Preservation Coalition. All relevant sectors of Dutch society are represented. Its aim is to develop a national infrastructure and to assign clear responsibilities. In the European arena the KB, together with the British Library, started the European Alliance for Permanent Access to the Records of Science. The Alliance works towards the widespread and joint responsibility for maintaining the records of science by all major stakeholders, including national governments and the EU. In the global context the KB developed the concept of the "Safe Places Network" . This Network will include a limited number of institutions with certified digital archives for scientific publications, sharing responsibility for complete, world-wide coverage and allocate tasks accordingly.

[目的/意义]从国家创新能力建设的角度研究国家图书馆企业信息服务，探索其在支持国家创新发展方面的作用。[方法/过程]采用文献调查法、网络调查法、案例分析法和访谈法，首先基于国家创新能力评价体系分析国家创新能力建设驱动的信息服务需求，其次分析英国国家图书馆支持国家创新能力建设的企业信息服务模式，然后调查我国国家图书馆支持国家创新能力建设的实践进展，最后提出其支持国家创新能力建设的企业信息服务策略。[结果/结论]我国国家图书馆支持国家创新能力建设的企业信息服务策略包括开展创新创业知识中心服务模式的研究，探索支持创新创业的企业信息服务模式，并在各地区推广支持地区创新发展的信息服务模式。     

Looking inside of the Utah COVID-19 digital collection as a community archive

Using the Utah COVID-19 Digital Collection as a case study, this study investigates the nature of the materials collected in a community archive during COVID-19, examining their unique contributions to building public history. The authors collected and analyzed metadata from 812 collection items created between March and June of 2020. Findings show that the local community's active voluntary participation was noteworthy. The local community submitted more than half of all collected materials. Even when submissions from the campus community decreased during summer break, the local community's submissions remained steady, helping to broaden the collection's geographical and topical coverage. The authors conclude by offering their recommendations for COVID-19 community archiving projects and future research directions.

Abstract

This article outlines several significant features of reading in Russia today. First the change of the cultural hierarchy is addressed: no longer is the reading of the classics a status symbol, indicating the reader’s adherence to traditional norms of culture. The classics have been abandoned as readers unashamedly pursue light entertainment in the form of detective stories, romances, etc. Second, there has emerged a new system of cultural organization as a result of the collapse of central state direction. So far these new forms of organization have proven totally inadequate: much of publishing is beyond the reach of both bibliographic control mechanisms and libraries, which are gradually ceasing to function as sites where high culture is consumed.     

The Rural Library Project: Building Libraries,Building Community

Just like urban residents, rural citizens want educational, cultural, and technological resources delivered in an affordable manner appropriate to their locale. Rural communities and elected officials strive to leverage their limited resources to meet critical needs, provide services, and improve their quality of life. The Rural Library Project, a small nonprofit in Georgia, is working with rural communities to organize and engage talent, gather resources, and value the public library as a center for lifelong learning and community development.

Library Statistics: The Russian National Standard

Goals for developing the Russian national standard GOST 7.0.20—2014, System of Standards for Information, Librarianship, and Publishing: Library Statistics: Indicators and Units of Calculation, were to create lists of statistical indicators for library and documentation activities and to establish the statistical units for measuring those activities. The regulations included in the new standard will improve Russian library statistics, since its indicators cover all areas of modern library work. Unified indicators and units of calculation will promote uniformity in the primary statistical data submitted. Such uniformity facilitates accurate comparison and analysis for planning, accounting, and forecasting.     

The power of a family archive

Traditionally, an archive of family letters provides primary source materials for historians. The family archive described in this article does provide detailed insight into the suffering of several Jews in Germany and France before and during World War II. It serves as a memorial to several individuals who were murdered by the Nazis. It is also a moving testimony of the cost of war. As such, it can be seen as contributing to the wider historical record of the Holocaust. But in addition, this family archive also opened an entire series of new relationships with previously unknown blood relatives scattered across the globe, with an artist drawing the archive into a creative remembrance project, and also with individuals interested in the history of their community in Germany, which was my father??s birthplace. This family archive demonstrates values of archives parallel to their historical significance. It provides a meaningful illustration for how they can, in an unanticipated and unpredictable fashion, serve as a device for forging contemporary and ongoing familial, interpersonal, and social relationships. Ultimately, this archive of family letters, created in the midst of pain and anguish and death, has laid a new foundation of commemoration and remembrance.
