The impact of communication apprehension on college student retention and success

Communication apprehension is conceptualized as a causal agent in student success. It is implicated in both academic and interpersonal success, two factors identified by prior resesarch as primary predictors of persistence. A four year longitudinal study of the impact of communication apprehension on grade point average and persistence at the university level was conducted. Results indicated high CA students were significantly more likely to drop out and attain lower grade point averages compared to low CA students. The impact of CA was strongest during the first two years. A replication of the study confirmed the impact of CA on student persistence. It is concluded the impact of CA on the probablity of high CA students’ survival in college is substantial and this impact adds to the case favoring the provision of training programs to assist such students overcome their apprehension about communication.

Examining the value of mentoring and men of color staff members of a community college

As higher education continues to experience a shift in demographics commiserate with the United States population, colleges and universities are making more concerted efforts to recruit men of color as staff, administrators, and faculty to reflect their diversified student bodies. One way to retain men of color staff members is to provide mentoring programs. While there are authors who are examining the benefits of mentoring, there has been little research into how men of color staff members of community college experience mentoring as a mentee and as a mentor. In this study we sought to understand how do men of color experience mentoring, both as mentor to undergraduate men of color and as staff mentees at a community college. The findings of our study include three common themes: investments made by mentors, investing in mentees, and support from administration.     

高校辅导员就业指导工作机制研究——以贵州省高校为例

就业指导是做好就业工作的关键环节,而辅导员正是此环节的一线工作者。从当前辅导员队伍基本状况、辅导员对就业指导工作的认识,就业指导工作开展状况、辅导员就业指导能力培养、辅导员就业指导考核激励措施几方面对贵州省11所高校开展了调查。结果显示,各高校均已开始重视辅导员在就业指导工作中的重要作用,但辅导员就业指导工作机制的建设还不完善。学校应加强重视,建立招录、用人、培养、考核激励一体化的辅导员就业指导机制。     

关于高校辅导员促进大学生就业的思考

高校辅导员是毕业生就业工作的主抓手。本文提出重视"两课"教育,做好就业前期工作;做好就业信息调研,利用新媒体拓宽就业渠道;加大政策宣传力度,鼓励创业,鼓励去基层;做好特殊学生的就业教育和帮扶等对策,促进高校毕业生就业。     

The influence of marriage on community college student achievement in specific programs of study

This study reveals and confirms earlier work regarding the positive influence of marriage on the scholastic achievement of community college students. It was found that marital status was an important predictor of community college graduating Q.P.A. in the following programs of study: Business Administration General, Business Administration Transfer, Executive Secretarial, and Nursing Education. Specifically, being a married woman appeared to place students in these programs at an academic advantage. It is suggested that researchers should look more closely at what marriage does to enhance a student's performance at the community college level.
