Model for cascading failures in congested Internet

Cascading failures often occur in congested networks such as the Internet. A cascading failure can be described as a three-phase process： generation, diffusion, and dissipation of the congestion. In this account, we present a function that represents the extent of congestion on a given node. This approach is different from existing fimctions based on betweenness centrality. By introducing the concept of ＇delay time＇, we designate an intergradation between permanent removal and nonremoval. We also construct an evaluation fimction of network efficiency, based on congestion, which measures the damage caused by cascading failures. Finally, we investigate the effects of network structure and size, delay time, processing ability and packet generation speed on congestion propagation. Also, we uncover the relationship between the cascade dynamics and some properties of the network such as structure and size.

A state space solution for the bending problem of thick laminated piezoelectric open cylindrical shells

Based on the theories of three-dimensional elasticity and piezoelectricity, and by assuming appropriate boundary functions, we established a state equation of piezoelectric cylindrical shells. By using the transfer matrix method, we presented an analytical solution that satisfies all the arbitrary boundary conditions at boundary edges, as well as on upper and bottom surfaces. Our solution takes into account all the independent elastic and piezoelectric constants for a piezoelectric orthotropy, and satisfies continuity conditions between plies of the laminates. The principle of the present method and corresponding results can be widely used in many engineering fields and be applied to assess the effectiveness of various approximate and numerical models.

Construction and Analysis of Structured Preconditioners for Block Two-by-Two Matrices

For the large sparse block two-by-two real nonsingular matrices, we establish a general framework of structured precondi-tioners through matrix transformation and matrix approximations. For the specific versions such as modified block Jacobi-type, modi-fied block Gauss-Seidel-type, and modified block unsymmetric (symmetric) Gauss-Seidel-type preconditioners, we precisely describetheir concrete expressions and deliberately analyze eigenvalue distributions and positive definiteness of the preconditioned matrices.Also, we show that when these structured preconditioners are employed to precondition the Krylov subspace methods such as GMRESand restarted GMRES, fast and effective iteration solvers can be obtained for the large sparse systems of linear equations with blocktwo-by-two coefficient matrices. In particular, these structured preconditioners can lead to high-quality preconditioning matrices forsome typical matrices from the real-world applications.

Treating dye wastewater by TiO2 coated on coal cinder

We investigated the photocatalytic degradation of dye wastewater by using titanium dioxide （TiO2） coated on a coal cinder. The coal cinder was used as the carrier, with a thin film of TiO2 coated on it by using the sol-gel method. Using the Congo red as the model pollutant for dye wastewater, we studied the decolorization efficiency, and effects of TiO2 film thickness and roasting temperature on the efficiency. We also evaluated the recycling and regeneration of the immobilized TiO2 （TiO2/cinder）. Results show that the decolorization rate of Congo red solution was more than 98% after 2.h treatment when we used TiO2/cinder calcined at 500 ℃ for 2 h and coated four times as the photocatalyst. At the same time, the TiO2/cinder remained high catalytic activity after being reused and regenerated for many times.
