<正> 综合图书馆利用LC MARC光盘数据库进行书目检索,新书检索命中率一般可达70-75％,回溯转换可高达80％以上,尽管如此,仍有20-30％的文献必须通过原始编目建立机读数据。 BiblioFile光盘编目系统具有较强的原始编目功能,用户可以根据要求选择专著、乐谱、录音资料、地图、投影介质资料(电影、幻灯、录像等)、计算机文档等13种不同记录类型的原始编目屏幕输入,并且可以建立自动的连续书目控制号。利用BiblioFile光盘编目系统建立原始编目数据前提有三:一要较全面地了解USMARC格式,二要掌握AACR 2或基于AACR 2的著录条例 (如《西文文献著录条例》) 和其它编目条例(如国会馆主题词表LCSH和相应的主题编目手册),三要熟悉BiblioFile编目系统的功能。本文就BiblioFile编目系统的原始编目功能以及原始编目实践的点滴体会,谈谈利用该系统建立原始编目数据。

The Cataloging Advisory Group

Abstract

Communication of public catalog issues throughout the University of Alabama Libraries has been and still is a major concern of the cataloging department. Many cataloging department heads hold the firm belief that improved user access to the libraries' collections can be provided through an improvement in the communication patterns between several key departments of the libraries and the catalog department. Through the input of a group of public service and collection development librarians, the department should be able to assess the time priorities for materials processing, resulting in a greater degree of probability that useful backlogs would be made accessible with a minimum of delay. As a cataloging department head, it is also my belief that a discussion of the cataloging process and the concerns of the catalogers could lead to more consistent and more efficient processing of materials. In November 1993 the Cataloging Advisory Group was formed as a one-year experiment in communication. Since that time the group has gone through numerous changes in both membership and charge but has continued to be one of the stronger discussion groups in the UA Libraries. The paper explores the group and its successes and failures during its six-year history.     

The Slavic Cataloging Manual

The article discusses the Slavic Cataloging Manual (SCM), available on the World Wide Web since 1994. The SCM contains a great deal of valuable information for all aspects of cataloging materials in Slavic and East European languages and in the non‐Slavic languages of the former Soviet Union, as well as equally valuable information for cataloging materials about the area. The manual offers especially detailed guidance on heading construction and subject analysis for the dissolved unions of the former USSR, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia. This is a valuable resource for anyone involved in Slavic cataloging, both the experienced cataloger and the novice.

The Cataloging of Self-Published Items

Abstract

This article presents the results of a 2015 survey of librarians who catalog self-published items. The survey was conducted in response to the growing popularity of self-publishing and the increasing prevalence of self-published items in libraries. Survey respondents were asked to describe how they are cataloging these items and to provide representative examples of the records they have created. An analysis of both the survey responses and the records is presented, followed by suggestions for best practices for cataloging these items.

The Electronic Cataloging in Publication Cataloging Partnership Program: A Model for Cooperative Cataloging for the Twenty-First Century

The Library of Congress’ Cataloging in Publication (CIP) Program has been in existence for forty years. During this time, the CIP Program has moved from a model where the Library of Congress created all pre-publication metadata for publishers to a partnership where other libraries share in the creation of metadata. This article documents the evolution of the Electronic Cataloging in Publication (ECIP) Cataloging Partnership Program. The ECIP Cataloging Partnership Program can be used as a model to leverage limited resources across libraries to the benefit of library users nationwide.
